Good value hotel

This hotel is rated 5 star but for the genuine 5 star connoisseurs you might be a touch disappointed. But my wife and I thought this was a great hotel as we usually do the 2-3 star thing! The service was excellent but often without an accompanying smile, the food was OK in the restaurant which we used just one night, and there was almost no-one in the pool each day even though it was 34 degrees and sunny.

Unique Quality: Being located on Gurney drive allows the rooms fronting the drive to have expansive sea views over the straits of Malacca. Luckily we were upgraded to such a room free of charge even though I had booked the (cheaper) rooms on the other side. Just outside the hotel along Gurney drive there are plenty of local restaurants offering exceptional food at very cheap prices.

GOOD LOCATION

We stayed at the Evergreen Laurel from the 18th March for 2 nights. The location is good for Gurney Plaza and there are plenty of eating places close by.The only complaint we had was we went into the bar for a drink and the smell of stale smoke was to overpowering to stay.Otherwise a ood hotel with good facilities

Great hotel, awesome staff, excellent value

I have stayed in this hotel every time I've visited Penang -- once for over a month straight. It's not the fanciest hotel out there, but what really made this place for me was the awesome staff! I mean, almost everyone in Penang is nice, really, but the people at this hotel really seemed to go out of their way to make their guests feel at home and take care of any need.

I have mostly stayed here when on business trips, but have chosen it for a personal trip once, too.

There is a hawker center very near this hotel which is super super good! If you're squeemish about what you eat, then you can eat at the restaurant in the hotel. When I ate there, I felt like I could find food that was pretty much like what I'd find in a hotel here in California (home). But, seriously, who wants that?? Be adventurous -- Penang food is the best! Not too far from Evergreen is a place called El Capitan (sp?).... Go there for the tandoori chicken! Yum!

Unique Quality: I recommend the sea view room; although, I've never stayed on the city side -- maybe that's a nice view, too.

Hotel with good buffet spread

Good service. Excellent buffet spread. Quiet and out of town.
Not a place to stay in if you want to walk around town easily. No buses to town. Have to take a taxi. Complimentary shuttle service will take you to Gurney Plaza which is about 20 mins walk from the hotel and leaves the hotel at 12noon, 6pm and 7pm. (only 3 services per day)

Unique Quality: Good buffet spread. They make an effort to change the breakfast menu eg. one day prata and another day roti jala. Jacuzzi and swimming pool excellent.Helpful and friendly staff especially Subra, Peter and "Handsome boy" Azlin.

Excellent Hotel

I splurged on this hotel knowing it had a wi-fi connection that I could use to work while I was on my visa run (from Thailand). Staying on Gurney Drive, though it doesn't have as much character as Georgetown, is much better for a single female. This hotel is great! Not too extraordinarily expensive, and a good location. Gurney Plaza is a modern shopping mall just 10 minutes' walk away, so you can get anything you might need. There is a Starbucks and a Subway right behind the hotel. There are also great (local) food stalls all over the place in this area. The rooms are pretty spacious and very clean. In addition to wi-fi and LAN internet access they have: cable tv with English channels, mini bar, bathtub with hot water, IDD phone, hair dryer, iron & ironing board, hot water pot and coffee/tea, bathrobes, 2 pools, a hot and a cold jacuzzi, a steam room and a dry sauna, a gym, a massage parlor/spa, a beauty salon, a couple of restaurants, one of which has a great breakfast buffet which was included in my cost (veal sausage & real maple syrup!), a children's play center, a conference room/business center, and a very friendly concierge who helped me obtain my visa. I definitely recommend this place.

5 Star hotel with sea view over Garney Drive

I stayed in this hotel during my Feb 07 visit to Penang for 4 nights. It was good service in general and experience. The hotel is clean. Prices are more than average. Book through agent will get you some discount. The location is about 10-15 mins from George Town.

FOR BUSINESS TRAVELERS

Whenever I am in Penang, I have always stayed at the Evergreen Laurel. The rooms are ok, there are a lot of choices for breakfast and they also arrange for transportation. They also have affordable buffets in the evemings.

This hotel is conveniently located along Gurney Drive, you can walk to the Gurney Mall, or to any of the restaurants close by.
