 | Evergreen Laurel Hotel: Excellent Hotel

I splurged on this hotel knowing it had a wi-fi connection that I could use to work while I was on my visa run (from Thailand). Staying on Gurney Drive, though it doesn't have as much character as Georgetown, is much better for a single female. This hotel is great! Not too extraordinarily expensive, and a good location. Gurney Plaza is a modern shopping mall just 10 minutes' walk away, so you can get anything you might need. There is a Starbucks and a Subway right behind the hotel. There are also great (local) food stalls all over the place in this area. The rooms are pretty spacious and very clean. In addition to wi-fi and LAN internet access they have: cable tv with English channels, mini bar, bathtub with hot water, IDD phone, hair dryer, iron & ironing board, hot water pot and coffee/tea, bathrobes, 2 pools, a hot and a cold jacuzzi, a steam room and a dry sauna, a gym, a massage parlor/spa, a beauty salon, a couple of restaurants, one of which has a great breakfast buffet which was included in my cost (veal sausage & real maple syrup!), a children's play center, a conference room/business center, and a very friendly concierge who helped me obtain my visa. I definitely recommend this place.

I have stayed in this hotel every time I've visited Penang -- once for over a month straight. It's not the fanciest hotel out there, but what really made this place for me was the awesome staff! I mean, almost everyone in Penang is nice, really, but the people at this hotel really seemed to go out of their way to make their guests feel at home and take care of any need. I have mostly stayed here when on business trips, but have chosen it for a personal trip once, too. There is a hawker center very near this hotel which is super super good! If you're squeemish about what you eat, then you can eat at the restaurant in the hotel. When I ate there, I felt like I could find food that was pretty much like what I'd find in a hotel here in California (home). But, seriously, who wants that?? Be adventurous -- Penang food is the best! Not too far from Evergreen is a place called El Capitan (sp?).... Go there for the tandoori chicken! Yum!
I recommend the sea view room; although, I've never stayed on the city side -- maybe that's a nice view, too. Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averagePhone: 04-226 9988Directions: Near Gurney Plaza
