definitely low-end
by SurfaceTravel about Jerejak Resort
Note: I did not stay overnight at this resort; I just went out to check it out, as I was nearby and the island looked interesting.
It is on that small island (Pulau Jerejak) just east of Penang, south of Penang Bridge. A ferry goes there every couple of hours.
I went over just for a couple of hours. It looks like a 2 or 3-star resort and it mainly caters to local corporate team building, with many activities such as paint ball wars, a suspension bridge, a nature trail, archery, etc. The pool looked very nice, but quite small. The "beach" looks nice from a distance, but is mainly a few truckloads of white sand spread on grass, going to the edge of, but not into, the water. There is a large sign posted "strongly not recommending" swimming in the water, which does look disgusting. Just beyond the beach, the grass was swampy and there is construction going on right next to the grounds - not active construction, just a bunch of disgusting landfill material there for all to see.
There is also a campsite. You can rent tents and buy food from the island.
Pulau Jerejak

Pulau Jerejak is the biggest island of Penang and is the first island visible to visitors arriving by plane or road. The island was previously used as a military post, a lepers colony, and also a penal colony.
In early 2004, Pulau Jerejak reopens as an eco-tourism destination with Jerejak Resort & Spa. There are guided tours to the heritage sites such as the penal colony and the tubercolosis wards. A suspension bridge is being built over a ravine where participants can do "flying-fox". An area is being cleared for a camping site, while archery and paintball wargames are on the way. A petting zoo is also planned, with a menagerie of goats, geese, rabbits and other tame animals.

Jerejak Resort and Spa... worthwhile?
by guppie74
Hi All.
We're planning to visit Malaysia in Jan 07 and have booked into the Jerejak Resort and Spa on Pulau Jerejak island, off Penang. Has anyone been here and could they advise me of what it's like? I have read unfavourable reports on this place on tripadvisor.com and wondering if I should cancel my reservation?!
Thanks.

13 years ago, Jerejak was an isolated island because it was a jail site and also an isolation place for leoprosy patients. but that was 13 years ago. personally i've never been to jerejak but its not that bad. Jerejak resort is heavenly ( from the various reports and recommendations from friends) and penang is only a few minutes away...

I can't help you with any information though I did read the other day that the resort on Pulau Jerejak was a failure as it had been suffering losses up to RM4mil since day one of its operation. I'm not sure if that's good or bad for tourists who stay there.
Why not stay somewhere nice on Penang itself? There is lots of lovely resort style accommodation at Batu Ferringhi.
Cheers
Linda

you did not specify your budget, or which area of Penang you're planning to go to, or what type of activities you want to indulge in.
nevertheless, i suggest you check out Jerejak Resort & Spa - if you want a bit of adventure, or Sri Sayang Resort for apartment-type accommodations. both are pretty cheap. visit their websites:

Consider Holiday apartment. I know one which belongs to my friend. 3 bedrooms. Partial sea view. 10 min walk from beach. aircond/fan. washing machine.
