G Hotel: Gurney Drive's most desired address
The G Hotel is Gurney Drive's latest boutique hotel. I stayed at the G Hotel from 1 - 3 August 2008 where I attended a medical symposium. Located on Penang's famous esplanade Gurney Drive, the G Hotel is near the famous Gurney hawker food center and just beside upmarket Gurney Plaza. Its design is stylishly contemporary with a large lobby featuring minimalist furnishing.
I had a deluxe ocean view room with a huge king sized bed and a bathtub facing the sea. Looking out of the window, I could see almost the entire stretch of Gurney Drive. There is a nice spa and swimming pool to relax on the 3rd level. It is a perfect hotel for a family holiday or a romantic escapade.

Red Rock Hotel: Nearest hotel to local fare
Japappy & SeanLow, Thanks for your feedback.
We had this thought to arrange for the 50 odd brisk walk club members to stay at a hotel where they can find local fares easily and thus the preference for Red Rock Hotel. Gurney Drive hotels are too expensive and also, the Gurney Drive hawker fare is at tourist price.
Japappy, I agree with you the food stalls across Red Rock Hotel didn't look too clean. Having said that, Singapore's local fare was somewhat in such an environment some time back too. ;) Anyhow, for late night eating, we had been to the coffee shop at Lorong Baru and eaten at the "Duck Meat Koay Teow Th'ng, Ipoh Yong Tau Hoo" stall for a few times. At the same place, we have also tried some BBQ chicken, beef noodles [Tom's fav!]. :) In the day when they have their free & easy time slot, they could go to Lorong Selamat for the red hat fierce lady char koay teow. :)
When we were last in Penang in January, we visited a dance club near Bayview Hotel - MoMo and didn't notice any food court. However, when I looked online for Bayview Hotel's info, I noticed that they now have an alfresco local fare up to 2am. :) That might a draw to stay at Bayview Hotel after all. :)
Anyway, I had recently found the name of the other hotel that is off Macalister Road - Sunway Hotel and we will be asking the tour agent to check out the availability of this hotel too.
Any feedback on Sunway Hotel at Lorong Baru? :)
Many thanks for your contributions,
Karan & Tom

Min Good Hotel: Go budget but not low-key
Even though its a budget hotel but surprisingly every single thing in the hotel room is clean. The hotel is so clean! Friendly staff and internet is free! They have wireless service is the room and breakfast is fuss-free. Besides that, located just along the Penang road, its pretty convenient too. Public transportations are widely available especially if you want to go to out of town, as Komtar is just 10 minutes walk from the hotel. And its' safe neighborhood makes me feel secured. The hotel also provides complimentary City Tour which took us around the city within 4 hours (please inquire the hotel about this). We went to Penang Museum, Reclining Buddha, Fort Cornwallis and Botanical Garden.
Be aware though that it's an old hotel so don't expect anything grand. What they are lacking of, are certainly made up by their super nice and friendly hotel staff.
Free wireless internet (most important!) and strategic location.

Peking Hotel: Good location
This old art deco style building looks attractive. Room rates is RM70 per room for 2 persons. It is located on Jalan Penang, opposite Hotel Malaysia.
There are bars on the ground and first floor. It is not suitable for light sleeper. Location wise, it's great.

Hotel Malaysia: Great Value for your money
Hotel Malaysia is located at the beginning of Penang Road. It seems like a fairly old hotel but still in good shape. Well maintained. Good location since it is located in the city center.
My friends and I walked in to asked for rooms for 4 persons. The receptionist suggested for us to rent a room with 2 queen size beds that can accommodate 4 and cheaper than renting 2 rooms. Our room costs RM122nett for 4 persons. (Room for 2 persons costs RM99nett)
Room comes with breakfast. Breakfast is simple but good. There are fried rice, fried noodle, porridge, hot dog, egg, toast, fruits, and coffee/ tea.
My room was on the 7th floor, and we got a good view of Penang. Hotel Malaysia also has a swimming pool on 5th or 6th floor. I would definitely stay at this hotel again and again.
Good location, good service, friendly staffs. Great value!

75 Travellers Lodge: For those on a budget-Clean and Comfortable
This was recommended by friends of ours.
Rooms are basic, but very clean and comfortable. The owner and the people that work here are so friendly. They know your first name. We have a western toilet, cold water shower, fan and Air cooler for 35 RM.
Soft drinks and beer available at a fair price for Malaysia. Pop next door to the Western and Oriental for food. Currently an hour's internet on offer for guests.
ESPN, HBO etc available on the T.V's that they have in the public viewing area. There is also a balcony for relaxing (but it has rained almost all the time, since we have been here)
Warm welcome and a cheap price with very clean rooms.
Thai visa service available

Hotel Mingood: Hidden Gem in Georgetown
This is an amazing deal. I don't particularly like Penang but I have to go every now and then to renew my visa for Thailand. I discovered this place after several trips to Georgetown where I was often disappointed by the quality of accomodtion. Hotel Mingood is very nice Chinese hotel- it has a very effusively friendly staff. The rooms are big and clean (if a little old), and have bathtub. The tv has no english channels, but there is free Wi-fi! Great location behind the old theater at the end of Chulia street and a couple blocks down (Jalan Argyll). I wouldn't wander around there at night though. The best part is the rooms are super cheap compared to similar places!

Naza Hotel, Penang: Great Budget Hotel in Penang
My SO & I stayed here from 06-08May'07. We took a chance when we booked this hotel via its main website, as there were not many, if any, reviews about it. It is located in Tanjung Tokong, about 10-12mins by taxi from Penang's capital, Georgetown.
From the exterior, the hotel did not look very promising. However, we were pleasantly surprised by this cozy little hotel. Our deluxe room, of RM138 per night incl. BF., was very spacious, and it had a direct frontal view of the sea.
The room was immaculately clean and quiet, with a comfy king-sized bed. The room balcony was a nice touch to let in the evening seabreeze. Bathroom was also spick n span, and though there was no bathtub, the water pressure of the shower is good. Air-conditioning works well. Local (Astro) tv programs, StarMovies, and Supersports. Other in-room amenities include: coffee & tea making facilities, mini-fridge, hair-dryer (upon request), etc.
The hotel grants early check-ins, and late check-outs (subject to avail.), great if you arrived at 11am like us.
WiFi hotspots within hotel.
Friendly and helpful hotel staff, speaking relatively fluent English.
Food centre(hawker) outside hotel that sells great-tasting local food (esp. the Chee Cheong Fun & Char Koay Teow), and screens LIVE sports telecasts from ESPN/Starsports/Supersports on its projector screen and TVs.
Water sports club next to hotel where rental of various sports equipment is facilitated.
Bus-stop to Georgetown about 3-4mins walk from hotel entrance. Bus-stop to Batu Ferringhi night market across the road.

Budget Hostels at Chulia Street, Love Lane area: Terraced prewar double storey turned hostels
There are many hostels along Chulia Street, Love Lane and the adjoining streets in this part of George Town. Some are internal renovations, otherwise have been rebuilt as 4 or 5 floors hostels with options of private rooms too.
They are basic accommodations for the budget travellers. Great place to meet other fellow budget travellers and backpackers. Manywill help arrange for transportation to your next destination or visa extension or renewal with Thai Consulate.
Again, do shop around for the available rooms that meet your expectations and budget.

Yeng Keng Hotel, Swiss Hotel, Cathay Hotel, etc: Old Mansions Converted to Backpacker Hotel
Along Chulia Street, Love Lane, Leith Street and adjoining Streets in this part of George Town, there are several old mansions with courtyards that converted into budget and backpackers accommodation.
Example are Yeng Keng Hotel (Chulia Street), Swiss Hotel (Chulia Street) , Cathay Hotel (Leith Street) to name a few. You can get air con, ceiling fan, attached or common bathrooms or bunk beds to match your budget.
Most have their small cafes for meals but there are plenty of choices of restaurants, street stalls and coffee shops to choose from.
Take your time to check the rooms available. If you are coming by van from Bangkok via Haadyai in the evening, very often the van will take you to their choice but you can check the rooms out. You can always stay for a night and look for a better one the next day.

Casuarine Beach Resort: Another Penang Seaside Hotel
Update: Unfortunately, the hotel is now closed for renovation. Will update when it is reopens.
Location is 10 minutes walk from the main drag of Batu Ferringhi hotels. So it has a quieter beach and perfect for family vacation and relaxation.
The hotel has been rei-invented itself over the years.
Popular with returning Australian and UK tourists who have lived in Penang and comes back for extended vacation stays and reunions.
Nice pool to swim or read a book.
