Tanjong Jara Resort, Dungun, Terengganu by xiao A beautiful resort located along a remote and quiet beach. A perfect setting to relax and unwind. Stayed in the Serambi room - nicely furnished, roomy, huge bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. There are 2 swimming pools. One is rather deep, hence very quiet. It has one of the best spas in the world (a winner of Conde Nast Traveller's Spa awards 2004). A must try - the traditional Malay massage!
Outstanding traditional Malay architecture and beautiful surroundings.

This little budget hotel is located in the heart of Kuala Dungun. It's cheap and clean. Many holidaymakers enroute to Tenggol Island put up a night here. Food is easily available in the shops nearby. For breakfast, walk opposite to Nam Kong coffee shop. They serve really nice coffee with local breakfast items like toast bread, nasi lemak and kuihs. For dinner, take a short walk to nearby Chinese restaurants for noodles or rice. All taste good. There is also a jetty nearby for fishing. Beware of dogs! I did not stay here but dropped by, took a few photos and asked a few questions about the resort. They have basic wooden chalets with no air-conditioning but they have planned to install in the near future according to one of the staffs who told me. This cozy operation is one of the fully-equipped dive outfits on the island, boasting a full-facility divers' base, DAN oxygen kits for emergencies, quality equipment and an impressively well designed divers' kit-up area. There is a Sun Aroma Cafeteria where they serve authentic Malaysian cuisine. I will recommend this resort if you are on a budget and do not mind without air-conditioning.
They have different room configurations to suit their guests. I stayed at Tenggol Island Resort (formerly known as Tenggol Aqua Resort) for 4 days and 3 nights from 31 May to 3 June 2007. Great diving (especially night dives - saw Spanish Dancer, Green Turtle, Scorpionfish, lots of nudibranchs, sea dragons and soft corals) but disappointing resort standard (frequent power failure, electricity only available from 6pm to 10am - not mentioned in their website, pathetic water supply due to pump failure, choked drainage in our toilet and our room air-conditioning was not cold after switching on for 3 hours (6pm to 9pm) I will not recommend this resort if you are not diving there and cannot survive without air-conditioning or fan.
Accommodation is in the form of chalets or bungalows (bayview or beachfront) with attached bathrooms and toilet facilities. The 20 natural timber chalets blend into the environment and nestled amongst the forest fringing the beach. The food served was above average and in local style. I did not stay here but dropped by, took a few photos and asked a few questions about this resort. It is a small resort situated at the southern corner of Telok Air Tawar of Pulau Tenggol. They have a total of nine rooms. Five stand alone wooden chalets on the hill side facing the sea and a traditional long house with four bedrooms. The stand alone chalets are of twin sharing basis and the rooms in the long house are either twin or triple sharing. All the resort rooms come with attached bathroom with no air-conditioning. The rooms are fitted with ceiling or wall fans and the windows are mosquito netted. The resort provides 24 hours water supply which are pumped from ground and electricity is generated by generator. Electricity is provided between 5pm and 10am. Electricity will be provided upon request outside those timing and they serve Halal food in local style. I will only recommend this resort if the other two resorts are fully booked and if they their dive centre is completed (under construction when I was there in June 2007).

This was most luxurious hotel I ever stayed in. The peace and quiet is pure pleasure and the soa isto die for. the hotel is out of way, but this is minor down fall as the hotel makes up in every way with comfort ans style.
The style of the individual units are superbly furnished and have either balcony or terrence depending on the your floor. The units are all two storey.

Even though it is called a homestay, you do not get to stay, eat, interact and live like the people in the house. What you get are tiny room with bathroom attached, just like a small motel. However, the set up is more intimate, where you can lounge at the common areas like the living room and dining room (with kettle and kitchenette). The location is great if you are looking for a beach holiday. The beach is right across the road. You can even watch sunrise from the verandah. The room is clean and simple. They provide prayer mats and surah yassin (prayer book). There is a small TV, with interior antenna - so reception is very bad! But hey, we were not there to watch TV, so it is OK. Food is a problem as they do not provide food service, unlike true homestay concept where you get to eat with the host! They are plenty of restaurant nearby but the problem is - they only open for dinner. So, for breakfast we had to walk about 1km to a food stall since we do not have any transport. Taxis are scarce and it is better to have your own transport.
The verdict - it is misleading to call it a homestay. It is more like a beach motel. Thumb up for the sunrise view!
