Perhentian Besar Accommodation
Coral view Island resort is located in north east of Perhentian Besar and is among the big resorts in Perhentian. The other big resorts being Tuna Bay, Arwana and Perhentian Island resort. As stated earlier, all the big resorts are located in Perhentian Besar. Coral view Island resort is located just next to Perhentian Island resort and has a huge inventory of rooms. But only the rooms located next to the sea (family rooms) are really worth staying. Rest of the rooms are very cramped, very cluttered and dark. The Garden view rooms are just for namesake. There is no garden whatsoever. Nevertheless, we did happen to see other hotels in the Perhentian Island and Coral View appeared to be better than other hotels, except Tuna Bay Resort.
As I wrote earlier, I tried to book Tuna Bay Resort 3 months in advance (I wanted to travel in early August, hence tried to book in early May) but was surprised to know that there was no room available. Most of the people want to book Tuna Bay resort, because it has the best reviews among all hotels in Perhentian.
Unique Quality: We stayed at Sea facing Family Suite and except for the water pressure in the bathroom shower, everything seemed to be in order. The water pressure was worst than a trickle and even though we called the Hotel mechanic to resolve the issue, it couldn’t be resolved. We tried for a room change, but there were no rooms available. There is no power supply from the mainland to the Perhentian Islands and hence these resorts have to depend on power generation from Diesel Generator (DG). As a result, there are frequent power failures. But these power failures are of short duration and more show, during day time. The lights are very dim in the room. There are some garden rooms, which are perched up in the hill side. The approach to these rooms is well lighted but you will have to walk a long distance in order to reach the room. Hence I will suggest going for Family deluxe sea view room. If you are unable to find a Family deluxe sea view room, your next preference should be Family deluxe Garden view room, which comes at RM 250 per night. These rooms are also equally good, but they are not sea facing. They have the same facilities as Family deluxe sea view room.
I paid RM 280 per day for Family deluxe sea view room and I would recommend these rooms to anybody. My room number was 214 and the location is right in front of the beach, with a beach volley ball court next door. There are Internet kiosks in the hotel. There is also a souvenir shop in the premises and a shop for renting out snorkels, life jackets, fins and scuba diving equipments. The Hotel has a restaurant, where they serve morning breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our package didn’t include morning breakfast, but you can pay on the spot and have morning breakfast. They charge RM 20 for adults and RM 10 for child. The food is predominantly Malay, Thai, Chinese and Western. Be prepared for long wait for your food to come, once you place your orders, specially during dinner time. This is common to all restaurants in Perhentian Besar.

Couple or Family's Best Place
I had a Wonderful Vacation at this island with a great stay at the resort, facilities and treatment .. in my humble view, it is the only best resort in that island.. Clean... The staffs are friendly... The room are great.. The food done by the cooker of the island especially, I really love it.. In my humble wview, it is worth to spend.. Everything i needed is there.. It wont spoil your vacation mood at all.. Only one thing that made me a bit stress, i have to use a boat to go party.. ;-P hehehee.. the only spot for party is situated at long Beach, Perhentian Kecil.. So, this spot not suitable for party-goers but for family or a couple..
Unique Quality: Accomodation.. Food.. Treatment and everything.. Its perfect for a wonderful experience of vacation there
Directions: Situated at Pulau Besar (big island of Perhentian) and facing in front of Pulau kecil ( small island of Perhentian)
Coral View - a mixed bag
At first sight we thought it looked lovely and wanted to stay here but they were fully booked. We stayed there on the last night of our trip in one of the cheap beach front huts. The hut was small, old and faded. It had the feel of a pixie hut about it (and the huge bizzare ornamental mushrooms in the garden didn't help matters. No I was not on drugs, but the person who designed this place most probably was). There is a variety of accomodation at Coral View some of it being suitable for people not elves. They have some much nicer, larger (more expensive) huts right next door. However, even in these huts the problem is that there is a thoroughfare right on your doorstep. There are people walking passed right under you nose day and night. Not very relaxing! Also seemed to be more mosquitos around because of the garden.
The staff on reception are stunningly efficient and speak excellent English.
As the name suggests, there is coral on this beach too. However, the snorkelling and coral are better on the PIR beach.
Getting into the water at low tide from Coral View looked a bit scary because there is a lot of exposed rock and coral - watch out for your feet. We swam across from the PIR pier instead to snokel the water around Coral View.
Unique Quality: No alcohol served in the restaurant. Several beach cafes round the corner serving food and booze though.
We had a couple of dodgy meals here, although the fried banana was delicious!
Most strategic location on Perhentian Besar
This resort is strategically located at the northwestern tip of Perhentian Besar, and as a result you have access to beaches to the north and west of the island. The beach itself is primarily coarse/coral, but there's easy access to the beach fronting Perhentian Island Resort via a wooden walkway.
The resort cafe is on the beach front and is a great place to relax with a book and drink in the afternoons, while enjoying the gentle sea breeze. Food's quite pricey but there's plenty of choice in the neighbouring chalet resorts. We tended to eat at Watercolour's for dinner, and Mama's for breakfast.
The family sea view suite is priced at RM280/night and can fit 3 comfortably, but you could fit 5 people with extra mattresses. These units have a great balcony and view of the northern bay, but get fully booked up fast. Alternatively the family deluxe suites facing the western beach is not bad either.
We stayed at the Rm100, budget standard fan room. Be warned that you access these units via steps and wooden walkway, and these are literally perched up on the hills like a tree house. Best thing about these units is that you're near to the local "lutong monkeys", flying foxes and squirrels.
Great place, friendly staff, and easy access to most parts of the island. The coral reefs in front of the resort was amazing! I saw turtles, sharks, sting ray, grouper fish, all from a short distance from the beach! The Rawa Island snorkel trip is highly recommended. RM40 per person gets you a 4 hour trip to 4 fantastic sites for snorkelling, plus lunch at the local fishing village on the small island.
Will definitely make a return trip!
Unique Quality: Great location. Good variety of accomodation type. No pool - who needs one on this island?
A wonderful place to unwind
This is one of the most popular places on either of the islands and I recommend you book before coming. We found that we couldn't get a recommendation by ringing up ourselves as they kept telling us it was full so we found an agent in KL who said he knew them personally. Anyway he got us an a/c room for 150R which is pretty good value. Apparently they'd had a cancellation. The hotel is on the basic side if you have the cheaper chalets on the hill like us but then you on an island. The restaurant at the hotel is the best on the island too and once we'd tried out the meighbours we just stuck with the CV. Their beef satay is amazing, also their watermelon and mango jiuces are huge. No need for alcohol really at this place, just as well because they don't sell any and don't allow you to consume any in public.
Staff here are super freindly and they'll recognise you before not long though service is a bit slow but hey who's in a rush.
They have a dive outfit attached but the snorkelling just of the beach is so amazing we never bothered.
Directions: You jump on any boat going to the islands from Kuala Besut and tell them which resort you want to go to. When you get close a small boat will come and pick you up and transport you to the shore.
More about Coral View Island Resort
CORAL VIEW ISLAND RESORT
My family and I have been visiting Perhentian Island every year for the past 4 years. We visited twice in 2005. Once in May & once in August.
We have stayed in Flora Beach and Coral View Resort. Both are in Perhentian Besar. I've been to Long Beach (Perhentian Kecil) too but the beach is dull... sorry, only a lot of foreigners there...
Honestly, we highly recommend Coral View Resort. We have been there 4 times. Why? As its name you can really snorkel for corals & colorful coral fish here. Just a few steps from your beach front Chalet (approx. RM290/day with excellent setup fo the whole family!).
We have never failed to see Nemos (Percula Clownfish) there. My kids loved their snorkelling spree everytime!
I've also encountered Black Tip sharks, turtles & Blue Dotted Stingrays here. The Coral lagoon area is huge (I think the largest in Perhentian Islands, both) and is as almost as what was shown in the movie, Nemo. Lagoon Depth is from ankle height up to 20 feet deep... a heaven on earth!
U can also rent a boat for RM120/day to visit the Perhentian kecil & to other snorkelling spots like the Shark Reef, etc.
The staff were friendly, the food & drinks was excellent. They have also fresh seafood for barbeque there. They even have satay! Don't forget to try Coral Sandy Beach Mocktail at the cafe if u decide to stay there.
If u are looking for a cheap one, I recommend Flora Beach. Chalet rates as low as RM120. The food is fresh, excellent and as cheap as mainland. The nearest snorkelling spot is the Black Tip Shark Reef which is only a 100 metres away.
This is ideal budget accommodation for a visit to Besar Island. We paid 50 R per night for a very basic beach chalet with double bed and en-suite. Basic but clean but more importantly because a slight breeze on this beach there were no mosquitos or sand flies! We had found them to be ferocious at the Reef where we had good accommodation and helpful staff. The Reef is cheaper accommodation (from 80R) next to the Coral View Resort (which has been praised on the site). Overall however Besar is heaven - torquise sea and soft powdery sand.
The food served at the Fauna was also surprisingly good and actually better than we had at Mama's chalets or the Coral View Our Chalet was right on the beach and we loved watching all the coming and going of water taxis and diving groups. Monkeys, tree snakes and monitor lizards all there to be seen.
Where to stay on the Perhentian Islands
We had problems deciding where to stay because there didn't seem to be a lot of information out there on the different options. We decided on Perhentian Besar rather than Perhentian Kecil and I think this was the right choice for us. Because of our indecsion we only booked accomodation for the first half of our stay on Besar. We chose Tuna Bay because it was in the right price range for us and there is snorkelling right off the beach it was a good choice.
We had to move and find somewhere else to stay after 4 nights because Tuna Bay was booked up from then on. We went to the next major beach which has the two big resorts - Coral View Resort and Perhentian Island Resort (these are reviewed in-depth with photos next). Of the two I preferred Perhentian island Resort, but then it is the most expensive place on the island and was a bit more than we wanted to pay. That said there are no super-expensive luxury options on the Perhentian islands, it is all a bit more low key and under-developed than that. Even PIR is a bit 'Fawlty Towers'.
With hindsight despite our lacking of planning (or because of it) I think we hit on the best solution - a two-centre holiday - staying 4 nights at Tuna Bay and 4 nights at Perhentian Island Resort. This allowed us to experience two different areas of the island. Staying at Tuna Bay first was good because it is a total chill out place - just what you need to start off your holiday. Perhentian Island Resort is a bit more luxourious so it was good to go there second. The beach and snorkelling at PIR was better than Tuna Bay, but there were a few more people around. Tuna Bay also had a couple of lovely deserted beaches you can reach by foot. Each has its pro and cons which is why going to both rather than chosing one worked for us. If you too are experiencing difficulties with deciding where to stay it is probably because there is no ideal place to stay on the Perhentians. Tuna Bay and Perhentian Island Resort are my favourites though. For beach front rooms book in advance.

RE: RE: How to book Coral View Island Resort
Thanks for the info, have you used them before?
I had been in communication with PERHENTIAN TRANS HOLIDAY SDN BHD but they're suddenly not answering emails.
Why is it so difficult/stressful to book a room on these Islands, I'm contemplating changing my plans and avoiding going to Perhentian after all!!
RE: RE: How to book Coral View Island Resort
I've just returned from Coral View Island Resort. You can call their office direct at +6096974943. It would be a shame to cancel your trip to Perhentian over a hotel booking! But book fast, the busy season is coming up!
