Kampung Bavanggazo Long House: Live Like a Rungus

Fantastic. Incredible. If you want to experience staying in a Long House, you must stay at Bavanggaza Rungus Long House. It is cooling as it is made of wood and atap. It is family-run and the owners are very friendly and hospitable.

    NOTE :
Most tourists go there through a travel agent. It is better to contact them direct. Owner is Mr Angkung Milaad. I will strongly encourage tourists to stay there for a night, at least as day visitors will not get a chance to interact with the locals and understand their culture and traditions.

Rates : RM50 per pax (Students); RM70 per pax (Normal for 2 pax min)

    It includes :
    - Rungus Handicraft
    - Entrance Fee
    - Welcome Drink (Local Coconut)
    - Cultural Dance
    - Dinner
    - Breakfast
    - Tour to nearby Vilages

  • Chalet Room - State of Sabah
    Chalet Room
    by bkoon
All chalets overlook the South China Sea and a spectacular sunset is almost a daily sight. Stay overnight in the beautifully structured chalets, and lose yourself in the romance of a tropical island paradise. The island is also ideal for small to medium sized meeting groups.

However, when I was there, a major renovation was going on and the pool was closed. There were very few travellers as many were day-trippers.

The chalet-type accommodation is suitable for families and groups.

We stayed in the Hilltop Lodge which overlooks the sea at RM230 per night for the chalet with 2 rooms.

The Trekkers' Lodge is very centrally located. Situated near the bus station and Gaya Street, if you are heading to other parts of Sabah or you just want to enjoy the city of Kota Kinabalu, Trekkers' Lodge may be a good choice. It is definitely a budget hostel. However, my advice is, BOOK REAL EARLY! I did not stay there as it was fully booked to one month ahead.

Just downstairs, there are coffeeshops and eateries which serve good food. The duck rice/noddle shop and the fish noodle shop are few shops away.

Smack in the middle of town. Walking distance to Sinsuran.

    Rates (including breakfast):
    Dormitory Room - RM18/pax (Fan); RM20/pax (A/C)
    Single/Double Room - RM40/room (Fan); RM45/room (A/C)
    Family Room (3 pax) - RM57/room (Fan); RM63/room (A/C)
    Single/Double Room (with attached bathroom) - RM70/room (with A/C); Extra Bed @ RM15

Similar to Asrama Medang. Menggilan seems newer and it has a bigger bathroom. There is a shared kitchen as well.

Cost : RM 12 per pax

Please note that the Park Headquarters staff may assign you to either one of the hostels as both are priced the same and situated next to each other.

You are encouraged to book and pay for the accommodation before you arrive at the Park.

    Great view of Mount Kinabalu.

There are many other types of accommodation under the care of the Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. Check them out from the website.

All staff were extremely friendly. The resort has a very welcoming feel to it. Lush and green with lots of quiet areas that you can just sit and reflect. The recently upgraded Tanjung Aru wing is definitely worth paying a little bit more for.

The pools were beaut. Great toddlers pool and two others of varying depths to suit everyone. The kids club has a good variety of activities to keep the littlies entertained. The hotel can also arange babysitting. There is a range of dining choices to suit everyone including a "corner store" which sells snacks, drinks etc.

    mess)
    by suzyq40
The stay here was wonderful. The staff were very polite, efficient and courteous. On arrival I asked for some ice to be brought up to my room, and it was there before I got there.
I was upgraded to a sea view room with King size bed as I was a Shangri-La Golden circle member, this is free to join and can be done on their website. I highly recommend it.

Every room has its own safe.
The rooms in the Tanjung wing have been renovated, however Im not sure as to how many in the Kinabalu wing have been, not that it matters, they were very spacious and clean. The Pools were great, quite large and there were enough banana lounges for everyone. Try a strawberry daiquri, fantastic.
The restaurants at the hotel werent that bad either for taste and price wise.

    Sukau River Lodge

This lodge is operated by Wildlife expeditions. The accomodation is chalet/hut style; basic but clean, comfortable and air conditioned. A bar and restaurant is available - and the food is pretty good. The restaurant overlooks the river and is a spectacle. The tours offered are great and the guides are really nice and quite good at finding animals.

The lodge organises jungle night walks - where you set out into the jungle at night to see sleeping birds, bugs, snakes and any other nocturnal animals that may come along - Don't miss this activity!

Laban Rata Guesthouse: Experience of Living Above the Clouds

  • Laban Rata Guest House - State of Sabah
    Laban Rata Guest House
    by bkoon
The Laban Rata Guesthouse is situated over 3000 feet above sea-level. Almost all trekkers who are trekking up to the Summit pass-by this guesthouse and it is one of the few accommodations available at "that height". The Laban Rata Guesthouse, Gunuting Laban Rata and Warus Hut are all under the care of the Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. There is no other accommodation except these 3.

There is no kitchen at the Laban Rata Guesthouse. It is dormitory-style. All dorms are installed heaters. There is a big eating place / restaurant where most trekkers pig-out on the buffet spread (RM20.60) after the tedious and strenuous hike.

Should you need to use the kitchen, walk up to the Gunuting Laban Rata just 5 minutes away.

Cost : RM 32 per pax.

They are all usually "booked out", so, please book early to avoid disappointment.

Living above the clouds. Great views.
