City Inn is a bit of a wander from the jumping-off docks for Semporna’s scuba trips. That’s both a plus and minus. In its favor is a relatively quiet corner of town that requires a 5-8 minute walk past the town’s attractive mosque, lively market and colorful waterfront. There’s plenty of restaurants handy and a slice of local life that might not be as present in other venues.
At 50 RM for a double room, City Inn’s clean and functional rooms and 3RM/hours internet café are a decent value.
IT LOOKS NICE. YOU WANT TO LIKE IT, BUT...
The “floating hotel” on the edge of the waterfront of Semporna might have been an appealing place once upon a time, but now indifferent and narrow-minded management seems to be focused strictly on maximizing profit by doing as little in the way of cleanliness and maintenance as possible.
My look at the place and its relatively high price (double City Inn’s decent pricing), along with the report of rat sightings by other guests convinces me to simply give this place a miss.
We stayed here for Christmas and New Year, with a trip to Sandakan in between. The hotel did a very good job of making the festive season one to remember, and their New Year celebrations were excellent. We attended the James Bond 007 (ie 2007!) party. Although it was expensive, we had a great evening. The staff worked really hard to make it special.
In general the hotel accomodation is very good. The new Tanung wing is beautifully decorated and very modern; the Kinabalu wing is also pleasantly decorated, although more standard.
The hotel has a lovely, landscaped swimming pool area. There is a good choice of restaurants for all budgets and occasions.
This lodge is located quite a way in to the rainforest, on the Kinabantangan River. We arrived by river, and were greeted at the jetty with refreshing, wet towels and cool drinks. There are only a small number of 'chalet style' rooms, which are basic, but clean and reasonably comfortable. There was very little water pressure from the shower; if you have long hair don't try to wash it!
Dinner was buffet style, tasty and plentiful. In each room 2 sarongs were provided, which guests are requested to wear to dinner!. We were given a 'sarong wearing' demo by our guide - there are different tying methods for men and women. The dining room is completely open, with just a roof, and provides a very unique dining experience. There were almost no insects about, which was pleasing for the phobics lke me!
If you are going to visit Selingan Turtle Island, you will have to stay overnight in one of their Chalets. Book early because space is limited. The rooms are basic but clean. The block we stayed in had showers in each room; I think one of the others had a communal shower room. There is a veranda area with big wooden chairs outside each block of chalets where you can sit and chill out if it's raining. The dining room is quite a walk from the chalets. They serve a limited 'self service' menu, but the food is of a good quality.
It doesn't really matter about the accomodation! The experience is all about the turtles.
Fairly new 5 Star hotel built on reclaimed land area. It is near the sea , a marina and golf course.
Not too far from airport and downtown Kota Kinabalu with a taxi ride.
Excellent deluxe amenities and a comfortable overnight stay here.
Can be combined with a holiday package with Malaysian Airlines under Cuti Cuti Malaysia.
The Shangri-La Rasa Ria is typical of the Shang resorts. We found that the food was plentiful, the accommodation more than adequate. If you like golf, the adjoining golf course is a great palce to spend a few hours 1 afternoon.
Although the Shang is 40 minutes from downtown KK, a free shuttle bus continually does the round trip from the Resort to KK. Even if you elect to eat in KK one evening, you can still catch the shuttle back in time.
Orangutan sanctuary, beach front location, beautiful sunsets and
Spent 15 nights (excluding 2night jungle trip) at this resort and cannot fault the staff or location at all. We stayed in the Tanjung Wing Deluxe Room, which is favoured personally over the Kinabalu wing as the Kinablu wing is over the Night club etc and the noise can be heard at night. There are three pools, with life guards on duty at all times the pool is open. I dont have children but there is a kids club and many many activities for kids. People keep returning to the STAR becuase of this. (So we were told)
Great gym, health centre (Massages etc). Has own tour desks, with wharf area with easy access to Sapi island etc close by. Sunsets to die for.
Shuttle bus to KK, walking distance to Hawker centre and cheap food.
The best thing about this resort was the staff. Could not fault them one bit. Everyone had a smile and went out of their way to make you feel special and make yourholiday the best.
We actually did a behind the scenes tour...recommend this to really appreciate the effort and work that they do put in.
Final night we had a private cabana set up on beach area with BBQ cooked at table for no extra cost over price of food. very romantic.
This hotel is still doing renovation . Room is ok comfortable as we just go for travel so will be ok only as this hotel at the centre of city area so will be near to go any place we likes.Good place yeah!
This is not exactly the Hilton hotel. In fact it's the opposite of the most luxurious Hilton you can imagine. There aren't any (hot) showers, no fan's, no aircon, no western style toilet and certainly no soap. The hut's you'll be staying at are basic, with a thin mattress on the floor and a mosquito net. And that's it basically. However the huts are extremely well located in the middle of nowhere, but close to orang utans, civet cats, elephants, crocodiles, many species of birds etc. The accommodation can only be booked as part of 3-4 day tour to Sungai Kinabatangan.
The track to the summit of Mount Kinabalu and backto the start takes two days. On the first day you walk to Laban Rata for some food and at night you continue to the top. By far the most convenient place to stay is at the Laban Rata Resthouse. It is still budget accommodation, but this is the best place to stay. Food is served here, there are hot showers and there is heating in the rooms.
This place is en-route to the summit of Mt. Kinabalu.
Only a five minutes walk to the centre where the orang utans are. This place is very clean and the owners are friendly and helpful. There is a big garden at the back with washlines and comfy seats. All rooms have either fan or aircon. I would certainly recommend staying at this place.
Boardwalks link the hotel areas to each other. This made for a relaxing and enjoyable journey every time we went to the office or restaurant.
its well maintained gadrens
My husband spent the night at the resthouse. He tells me the accomdation was fine. There were 6 men in his room. The only complaint he had was the room became too hot durning the night. With a heater going ang 6 other men in the room it became uncomfortable.
There is a resturant at the resthouse where you can purchase your meals. The canteen at Laban Rata serves dinner from 5 to 7 pm and opens for breakfast from 2 am to 3 am.
Photo of Waras Hut on Mt Kinabalu. The hut is dormitory style without heating. It has cooking and bathroom facilities but no hot water.
