Mini Bus
If Sabahan said 'take the bus', it is very likely that it is a van.
There are local public buses which is really a bus; but sometimes for some longer distance journey, such as from ranau-KK, the 'bus' is actually a van.

we have three days here to celebrate our 10th anniversary before we head out to do a turtle island, kinabatangan river and sepilok...
we are staying at shangri la tanjung aru resort..
what should we NOT miss!
You need 1 day to discover KK and possibly another for the islands. Not much else doing. I'd go to the museum. It is dry and very tedious, but has lots of information about the history. (Have you read up on these area's?)
we are mainly going to Borneo for the sanctuary...we thought because it was our anniversary that we would stay at KK. I have done a little bit of research, but as we only have 3 days I wanted to have the opinion of real travellers rather than a tourist book
I personally found that there was not much going on in KK proper. We went scuba diving for a day off one of the islands just off KK and it was not that great either.
Sepilok and the eco lodges (sukau in our case) up the Kinabatangan River, etc. were highlights of our trip there two years ago.
National Park is not a bad idea. You can go for trails and if you are lucky you will get to see the famous Rafflesia flower on the road. I will not suggest you to stay inside but you stay at a lodge not far from national park which is D'Villa lodge. It is situated around 150m from national park only. It is a budget lodge for you to have a rest on the way before going to Sepilok, Sandakan.
Definitely take a trip out to the islands! You can either do this independently by getting one of the boats from KK, or you can book an organised tour of the Marine Park at your hotel, which includes a guided tour around the mangroves on Gaya island and a bbq lunch and snorkelling on Sapi. We did this tour a few years ago ( http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/6cdf8/138c41/4/ ) and it was really worthwhile.
We're going back to Borneo this weekend to see some of the places we missed last time - Sepilok, Turtle island, etc, and really looking forward to it!
Elaine
let us know what you think of the tour to turtle island etc. we are doing that as well and cant wait!
I think that the islands are a big must!
I wouldn't miss the Pardis River rapid trip or going out to one of the Islands.

Good trekking/climbing shoes are very important because its quite a long climb. Temperatures can drop to less than 10 when you're nearing the summit of Mount Kinabalu, so it would be advisable to bring some waterproof, thick windbreakers and gloves to keep yourself from getting sick if you're not used to cool temperatures. Bring a camera which will not get stuck under cold temperatures, if not, you'll regret it if you are not able to take down the breathtaking scenery!
