Expensive food
by yuet29
Expect the food in sabah to be more expensive than in peninsular malaysia.
Here, a plate of chicken rice costs you RM3.50 to RM4, which is a ringgit or so more than in peninsular Malaysia. However, a bigger portion is given as well compare to peninsular.
Timing tips for the climb
by happyhormones
I was curious about the timing before I climbed Mount Kinabalu, so now that I've done it, I thought I'd share.
Day 1
8am - 10am: Bus ride from the city (RM15/person) to Park HQ
10am - 11am: Paperwork, checking-in to Hill Lodge
Rest of the day to sleep, laze
6pm: Climbers briefing
Day 2
8am - 9am: Breakfast at Balsam at HQ
9am: Short ride to the start of Timpohon Gate. Hiking begins. Eating of crappy packed lunch at the shelters along the trail.
2.30pm: Reach Laban Rata. Was that the longest 5.5 hrs or what? It's 11.3 degrees. I didn't feel that cold.
2.30pm - 5pm: Laze in room & shower
5pm: Dinner
7pm: Try to sleep despite headache
10pm: Can't sleep, panic
Day 3
1.30am - 2.30am: Get ready to leave. It's 9 degrees outside. I wear about 3 layers.
2.30 - 5/6am (can't confirm because wearing gloves and couldn't check watch): Climb in the dark. Crawl sometimes. The rope is your friend but I also slipped a little. Winds blow. The guide does it so easily.
Stay for 15 minutes on the summit. Start to climb down
9.30am: Tired and exhausted, reached Laban Rata. An hour to shower, eat breakfast and get ready for climb down.
10.30am - 4.30pm: Climb down. There's no cable car or furnicular, you have to use your feet, one step at a time. Or more like, one breaking knee at a time.
4.30pm: Cab back to Kota Kinabalu city.
Mt. Kinabalu -- Mesilau Trail
by tyhuix
If you have the time/energy/a little more money, instead of taking the Summit Trail from Timpohon Gate, opt for the Mesilau Trail. It's more scenic, much less congested, and far far far more enjoyable. We took the Mesilau Trail up, and the Summit Trail down.
Stay the night at the Mesilau Park HQ, and start trekking the following morning. The Mesilau trail is about 2km longer than the traditional trail, and it takes 5-7 hours to reach the Laban Rata Guesthouse (it took us, a moderately fit group, 6hrs in the rain). There are rest-stops and water tanks along the way. (pls note that the tanks hold rainwater, which is fine to drink though the more cautious might want to bring some iodine/water purification tablets)
A guide is required. For more info, visit http://www.suterasanctuarylodges.com.my/general_info.htm
Warisan Square
by kenningst about Warisan Square
This mall is the latest mall in KK now and have a nice selection of mid to mid-high end products, cafes and restaurants. I like this place mainly because there is starbucks Coffee at the ground floor. Nothing beats a good cup of coffee...
KKGroove
by fable2ismylife about All of them!
Well, my advice isn't exactly for one spot, not a real spot anyway but a virtual one. I found that most of the clubs in Kota Kinabalu are listed on one site (finally!). The site is KKGroove (kkgroove.com) and they list it all -- bars, clubs, pubs, and even karaoke places. Its pretty sweet. They also have all the latest parties organized by month on the Events section, so if you're in town for one weekend you can check out in advance if theres any big parties planned. Pretty sweet! (and theyve got restaurants reviews and sports and all sorts of stuff as well as the usual hotels, tour agencies, spas and tourist kind of spots / things to do) Anything you sit at home on your computer in!
