At sunset

If you come to Kota Kinabalu don't miss its sunset, just beautiful.

Hi.I will be travelling with my friends to KK on Mar 2010 and we have 15 pax.My biggest concern is the transportation around KK and to Kinabalu park & Poring Hot Springs. Is it easy to get transportation to and fro Kinabalu park & Poring Hot Springs?Shall we pre-arranged the transportation thru tour agent or to get one at the taxi stand(as i read from the few forum here).I surveyed and find the tour in KK is a bit expensive.Need some advice on this.
Thanks!
Hope some of this will help but you may know already. Things you can do without tour agents while you are in KK:
1.Visit TAR islands Manukan etc...snorkel etc you just need to find out the timetable for the boats going out to the islands. Any accomodation place shld have this
2. Go to Kinabalu Nature Park from KK by bus is about an hour or so. But if you intend to climb the mountain, do make prior arrangements for accomodation there as it is very popular.
As for Poring, my group had rented a driver&van to a long trip...picked us up from Kinabalu Nature Park (KNP) after the mountain climb to Poring and on to Sandakan then back to KK. But if you are going to go to Poring only, you might enquire tour agents the cost of taking you from KNP to Poring since there is a large number of you and perhaps back to KK. It could be more cost effective than taking a cab. There might be buses going to Poring from KNP not sure but it would probably be on an hourly (or less frequent) basis. There are cabbies tho and you could nego. price (when i was there it could be done).some may have vans that you pay per pax as KNP to Poring is a very common route. Perhaps you can also nego. since you have that many friends that instead of say rm20 per head, reduce it to rm15?Coz the driver doesnt have to wait for more passengers. Depends on the time of day you reach back at the park after the climb. By dusk, cabbies are scarcer..in that way renting a van prior to going there is better (the driver will wait for all of you) If you don't do the climb, still, spend a few hours at the park and trek up for two hours or so and enjoy its beauty. Remember to pack some food though. The cafe at the park is quite nice to chill&pack food. You should not leave Sabah without going to KNP a Unesco World Heritage site!
The average cost of van rental without driver is around RM300-400. with driver, you add another RM50 to RM100, depends on your negotiation skills. Van can seat around 10 passenger. THey usually use Kia Preggio or Toyota Hiace. Expect to spend RM60 for petrol per day.
If you have problem getting a van, let me know.

Tissues - I would suggest you always carry one of those pocket size packets of tissues with you.
Useful for many things, last but not least is cleaning up after gorging on those fantastically messy chicken wings the hawkers sell which are iresistable.
Nepenthes rajah [ni-pen'th?z ra'ja], named after the White Rajah of Sarawak) is an insectivorous pitcher plant species of the Nepenthaceae family. It has a very localised distribution, being restricted to Mount Kinabalu and neighbouring Mount Tambuyukon in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.[2] N. rajah is famous for the giant urn-shaped traps it produces, which can grow up to 35 cm high and 18 cm wide.[3] These are capable of holding 3.5 litres of water[4] and in excess of 2.5 litres of digestive fluid, making them probably the largest in the genus by volume.
Pearls are a big shopping item in KK. They are good quality and cheap.
They can be bought at department stores, Jewellers, and at market stalls ie the Craft market at the waterfront and at the Gaya St Sunday market.
At the last 2 remember to bargin the price down.
