We arrive in Kota Kinabalu on March 8, 2010 and are leaving March 12th. We plan to travel to Sandakan to the orangutan rehab centre. Are there buses running between the 2 places? How long is the trip? Any suggestions to hotels? Thanks, aucangen
According to the following link - 5 to 6 hours.

We did a round and about trip there and flew back (40 to 50 minute flight). Accomodation, we stayed at the Sepilok Jungle Resort - quite nice and we quite enjoyed our stay there. Ir's just around the corner from the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.

Don't forget that you have one or two feedings a day, which is really the only time you will see the orangutans (your ticket has a warning on it stating that oragutan sightings are not guaranteed).
A short video from our trip there (coming up on two years in March) is posted on my home page: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/vv/24cc/
Flying there is quick and cheap, check out Air Asia for good deals. Our accommodation was at the Sepilok Nature resort, this was very nice and next door to the sanctuary.
Hi, I went there a few years ago. We flew form KK to Sandakan, I think it cost about $60Aus it is only about 40min flight. We also drove from KK to to mt Kinabalu, I think this is the same road you take to sandakan, it is very long and windy and would take many hours. Flying is cheap and easy. If you are going to Snadakan, we also went to Turtle island which was fantastic, but you need to stay overnight for that.
You can fly or take the bus. The road is windy and will take around 10-12 hours. Flying is far more preferable!
The Orangutang centre is not in Sandakan, but a couple of miles out (Sepilok). You can take local transport (a fun experience) or a taxi (not too expensive). There is accommdation quite close to the centre. I thoroughly enjoyed a visit to the Rainforest centre it as very well done and worth a couple of hours to visit.

Well, there is a lot of mosquitoes in Sabah.. night market, filipino market, ...
I will consider insect repellent as a must when travel in Sabah. For insect repellent with DEET, I cannot find any in KK. MOst of the insect repellent here are from traditional/ nature ingredient for example from different kinds of herbs. So if you particularly want the insect repellent with DEET, bring yours here.
I was told by a pharmarcist that insect repellent with DEET actually threathed fish. So if you go into water, make sure you wash out the repellent first before you go into the sea.
A natural area where you can enjoy the beautiful skyline of the city with a view that extends to the islands. Sad to say that most part of the coastal line has been blocked by tall structures. However, you still can see some blue sea at far end. Not a good vantage point to view the beach but to have a bird's eye view of the city.
Walk cut across Gaya Street then you will see a small mountain. Cross a street & you will see a football field. Take that road & walk up the slope. I think it will take about 15 to 20 minutes. No admission fee is required.
A great way to jumpstart your Sunday morning tour. Gaya Street market opens only on Sunday morning. I love the atmosphere. The colours of painting, handicrafts and garments. The sounds of birds chirping and people haggling. The aromas of local delicacies. Take your time to browse through the merchandise displayed and you might discover something you really like to take home with you. Pets - puppies, tortoises, tropical fish, hamsters, birds, rabbits etc.
FengShui figurines.
Household Items
Potted plants, fruit plant - lime, mango, even durian tree.
Fresh flowers. Fresh fruit. Fresh vegetables.
Souvenir items - key chains, bracelets, woodcarvings, seashells, T-shirts, caps etc.
Local cakes and desserts Cheap but don't forget to bargain.
I think this is the biggest mall in Kota Kinabalu. April 17, 2006
