4WD to Mesilau & Kinabalu Park
by meliaz
We took a 4WD up to Mesilau Nature Resort from KK town (we went to the Borneo Backpackers Hostel to get a good 4WD, loads were parked nearby), there were 4 of us plus all our luggage and were charged about RM250.
For our trip back to KK town from Kinabalu Park, our guide recommended a friend to us (ask your guide for a recommendation too, he can easily help) it was RM130 for our trip back. The price according to him is around RM130-RM150.
Note: I never stayed there, but the Borneo Backpackers looked quite popular with tourists and the website looks quite good and convincing. You can always check it out for a budget holiday: http://www.borneobackpackers.com/welcome/
Mount Climbing
by Andrewooi
The Mount Kinabalu really put one's stamina & self-determination to the test. With the height of 4,100 metres (about 13,500 ft), thin air, low temparatures (can drop as low as below 5 degrees) & challenging route, it was a tough climb, but once reach top (Low's Peak), the satisfaction was unexplainble.
A van picked us up at our lodge as early as 6.30am. The journey from the city to the foot of Mt KK took about 1 hr & 15 minutes. We reached the Mesilau Nature Resort (recommended to use Mesilau Trail instead of Timpohon Trail as it is less crowded & longer route - able to enjoy your climb better) at around 7.45am & all geared up for the climb. After some simple registration process, we were introduced to our mountain guide, Felix Agus (every group will be assigned to a mountain guard, most of them a seasoned climber).
We started our expedition exactly at 9am, while the temparature was still chill with fresh air. Our reaching point for the day was Laban Rata, which is about 6km, almost uphill climb all the way. Along the route, we managed to see many rare wild floras, while meeting many climbers from different countries. One thing that amazed me most, was watching a native man in his 30s (I guess), climb passed me with a 30kg cooking gas tank behind him. It just made me wonder how far actually a man can push their limits when comes to making a living.
We reached Laban Rata about 3pm & the weather is getting colder with the rain started to pour. There, we have about 10 hrs for us to take a good rest & some sleep before getting ourself together again to continue the climb to the summit.
We got to wake up in the middle of the night & continue our climb at 1.30am. The weather was so cold & the air is getting thinner that some of the climbers being hit by altitude sickness. Many continue the climb while some actually discontinued halfway.
The 2nd half route was rather more difficult as it is steeper & slippery, while the air is getting thinner as the higher we went, making our breath shorter. Also the fact that our vision relatively lower in the darkness. Nevertheless, that's the thrills that climbers are looking for, right?
After another 4 hrs plus of climbing we reached the summit - The Low's Peak. The feeling & the view... WOW!! It's speechless. Climb & experience it yourself.
Tips of items to prepare for the climb:
1. Jacket/sweater
2. Head torchlight (make your climb easier)
3. Energy Bar
4. Hand Glove
5. Some red wine will be good to warm your body
6. Mineral water
7. Winter cap
8. Long pant
9. Altitude sickness medicine

accommodation on the mountain
by purplecat
Hi everyone,
We are heading to KK at the end of the month and we're staying at the sutera Harbour for 6 days then going to pulau Gaya for 3 days. We have a week free after that when we want to spend a couple of days on the mountain. We're not that interested to climb to the summit but we want to stay up there for the atmosphere and a few sightseeing walks. Can anybody suggest what accommodation would be good for our purpose? We want comfortable accommodation (not shared preferably) and are willing to spend around $200MR a night. We were looking at Hill lodge and Nepenthes lodge but if you have any other suggestions, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks, Melanie

I cannot remember but i think its about RM300.00.
You might want to consider accommodation in Mesilau Nature Resort. Its better.
You can contact Mee Sheah at meesheah@kinabalunatureresorts.com. Just mentioned to her that Patricia from KL is recommending you. :-)
