elderly parents

by brinthina

Hi there
am taking my parents to KK . They are ederly and cannot walk far distances.
they enjoy nature but nothing too hectic.
Does anyone have any suggestions on best location to stay where they can get a feel for KK without being tired out

thank you

hire a taxi to Kota Kinabalu Park, poring hot spring, the floating mosque, join a half day tour to go deep into the rain forest by boat to see the firefly, or just walk around in the city streets, the seafoods are excellent, I personally like KK as it is like go through a time tunnel back to my childhood old Hongkong(Cantonese is widely spoken in KK).

Kinabalu Park Resort, Kundasang....request for the rooms at the hillside, you can see the Mt. Kinabalu from there...very nice ambience...

at Kinabalu down town , you can stay in hotel that located just cross to the waterfront then parents can enjoy the sun set and having seafood. If no problem for the hotel budget then better stay in the 5 star Tanjung Aru hotel which has its own beach. Also you can move to Kunsadang area its nice to stay in the hotel that the view is Mt.Kinabalu with the green hilly side surrounding.
My last visited , I also took my mother in law 75 years together with us and she enjoyed much having holiday there.

In the city, stay somewhere across the waterfront. Its a short walk to the handicraft market and the seafood stalls. Choices of hotel would be Le Meridien, Promenade, Imperial Boutec & Imperial International.

It would be good if you're plan to drive around. Drive to mountain range, visit the Kinabalu National Park and Poring Hot Springs. The park is about 2 hours drive away from the city. You can also opt to stay at the mountain side. At the Kinabalu Park, there are a few types of accomodation. I've myself stayed at the twin cabin before. Nothing beats the view of having the mountain right at the door step. You can also stay at the Kinabalu Pine Resort or Mount Heritage Resort.

Travel Tips for Kota Kinabalu

Friendly people

by yuet29

I find sabahan to be very friendly people, more friendly than those in peninsular malaysia. They generally very open and easy in front camera, helpful when you ask for assistance and ready to help.

When I was in Ranau, people in the bus station take the initiative to help us in giving direction and suggestions. This happened a few times in my short trip to Sabah making me believe that sabahan is so kind and friendly.

KK Map

by yuet29

KK is small and most of the tourist spots are reachable by foot. Thus, a town map is a must to bring with.

You can get a free town map from Sabah Tourism Board at Jalan Gaya or download one from internet. I was using a year 2001 map but most of the places are still the same. So the old map doesnt give me much trouble.

White water rafting at Padas river

by syetan

You can go white (yellow really) water rafting at Padas river. Price can range between RM120-250 depending on your connections and bargaining skills. Basically a tourist can forget about the lower price-try get RM190. These days prices are advertised online so unless you are a group tourist you probably won't get charged the higher end prices. You'll be picked up from your hotel, taken to Beaufort train station where you'll get on a neanderthal era train to the starting point. All done, maybe you'll get there from your hotel in 2.5 hours.

Now you'll get a safety talk and get thrown on a raft. Duration can take between 40-90 minutes depending on whether it's been raining recently and you'll go through 5 rapids. You can jump off and are rescued by kayakers if you can make it back to shore. Food is available at the end but be quick-it's not necessarily enough for everyone. Then you go back.

Toilet facilities there there but can be quite basic, to say the least, both on the train and rafting area...

I have more information on my Kampong Padas Valley travel pages.
