We are a family of 3 and would like to hike up Mt Kinabalu in Feb it sounds very
expensive now, does anyone know how it is now and if they know of a reasonably priced travel agent in Kota Kinabalu.
Thank You.

Hello Chriskeith. Im climbing Mt.KK too on Feb 26-27. Here is the link http://www.suterasanctuarylodges.com.my/v2/labanrata.html you can email them and they will help you with the Mt. KK climb. The climb cost around RM600 including the lodge and full board meals.

Travel Tips for Kota Kinabalu

For Malaysians...

by travelpug

For Malaysians who live in the Peninsula, upon arrival in Sabah, you will be given an immigration slip as shown on the picture. Malaysians are only allowed to stay in the state of Sabah for 3 months! Can you believe it? We are from the same country called MALAYSIA, aren't we?

Essentials to pack: Mount Kinabalu

by happyhormones

A backpack for the hike up the mountain. Not a large and heavy one because then you will get tired, but a medium-sized one that would fit a couple of jackets. I wish I had brought a cool raincoat. It's likely to rain bad while you're halfway going up or down, so don't forget it. And you can't take the rain as an excuse to rest for long, because then your muscles cool down, and hiking becomes more difficult.

Hiking shoes really helped me alot because of the rough terrain and sometimes wet areas. I felt protected too, in my shoes and hiking socks.

A beanie for the climb to the summit is necessary, so it a headlamp, because it's dark at 2.30am, and if you want to climb AND see where you're going without slipping, wear a headlamp. A packet of tissue, in case you need to use the not-so-pleasant toilets along the way. A cute bikini perhaps, if you'd like to take it all off at the top and look fabulous for that summit photo ;) I found a good walking stick to be really important! I relied on it going up the mountain, and coming down as well. It provided me support where I would have wobbled on uneven surface otherwise.

Central Market

by gypsysoul73

We checked out the sprawling central market located just beside the Waterfront esplanade. We walked through stall after stall of vegetables and fruits, some of which were unrecognizable. They had a fish market towards the rear near the water, and a large section with tables and chairs surrounded by stalls of cooked food, chicken and fish on the grill and all sorts of native sweets. It was already 10 pm yet the market was in full swing.

We tried some snake fruit (top left photo), so named because of it's leathery snake-like brown skin. The fruit is native also to Thailand and Indonesia and known locally as salak. The flesh is firm and acidic, not very sweet. I wasn't too fond of it, but I'll take it over durian any day! We did buy some pomelo and guava sprinkled with plum powder to take to the hotel. My sister had introduced me to the apple and plum powder combo recently and even gave me a tub of the stuff, now I have a new fruit to eat it with.

Beads Neckless

by yeikloen about Palm Square Central Point

Its just a stall located on the 4th floor of Central Point. There are just lots of beads neckless for you to choose to. Less then Rm8 for a nice neckless and some going for RM5 buy one free one for smaller ones

Centrepoint Shopping Mall

by yipsufen about Centrepoint Shopping Mall

This is the usual everyday shopping place for the local.

Pacific Ngiu-Kee, one stop departmental store & supermarket.

There is a food court at the basement floor, catering all kinds of food. Prices are reasonable. There is a stall selling fresh fruit juices that is worth trying. My personal favourite is the avocado juice. For a mere RM3, you can have a pure, thick & smooth taste.
