Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort is the best choice for those who like to stay nearby the Kota Kinabalu city and airport. 10 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes to the city by cab. 15 minutes walk to the Tanjung Aru Beach (a place where you can try the local foods and fruits, such as satay, rojak, cendol, rambutan, jackfruit.... even the Durian ). 15 minutes ride to the TAR Marine Park. Beside thats, the hotel provide the 1st class service so that you feel like a King and Queen while your stay.
All staff were extremely friendly. The resort has a very welcoming feel to it. Lush and green with lots of quiet areas that you can just sit and reflect. The recently upgraded Tanjung Aru wing is definitely worth paying a little bit more for. The pools were beaut. Great toddlers pool and two others of varying depths to suit everyone. The kids club has a good variety of activities to keep the littlies entertained. The hotel can also arange babysitting. There is a range of dining choices to suit everyone including a "corner store" which sells snacks, drinks etc.
We spent a week here in February 2009. A very relaxing, friendly resort. Breakfast included was amazing. Gardens are extensive and beautifully maintained. Sunset was spectacular. view to islands were wonderful.
Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort (STAR)
Malaysian ringitt (RM) 25 acres beautifully laid out, on the South China Sea. A five star resort, with all the amenities one could ask for. Numerous pools & resturants, shops, all tied in one resort. A little pricy, but well worth it!

I have stayed at Shangrila¡¯s Tanjung Aru Resort. And it was really excellent!!! You can even stay whole day in the hotel. They have a great swimming pool and if you are sick of the freshwater, you can walk to the beach in no time!
This 5-star hotel has everything you can wish for. It has several restaurants, shuttle service, pools, beach, good rooms, very good service, massage saloon, fitness center, bar, lounge, cocktail bar, theme nights, day events, view of the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, you name it.... It's pure relaxation after some serious traveling. All of it.... see above
Not a bad location because is a walking distance to the beach and also a newly build complex with some pub, a restaurant and a food court with lots of food to choose from. BB Cafe band off duty at 12mn, beers are quite expensive RM20 for 4 cans. Close to Terminal 2 Air Asia Airport and reasonable food.
The stay here was wonderful. The staff were very polite, efficient and courteous. On arrival I asked for some ice to be brought up to my room, and it was there before I got there.
I was upgraded to a sea view room with King size bed as I was a Shangri-La Golden circle member, this is free to join and can be done on their website. I highly recommend it. Every room has its own safe.
The rooms in the Tanjung wing have been renovated, however Im not sure as to how many in the Kinabalu wing have been, not that it matters, they were very spacious and clean. The Pools were great, quite large and there were enough banana lounges for everyone. Try a strawberry daiquri, fantastic.
The restaurants at the hotel werent that bad either for taste and price wise.
This use to be my playground...... Tanjung Aru beach it is. A place to be the first day you come visit and that last trip before leaving just to mesmerize your trip in Sabah, Malaysia before you go. Simply, just to enjoy that afternoon breeze.
Each visit is always like the first time. Finding a nice spot.....getting that cold coconut drink or just a cold cocktail.... Its a very relaxing place to enjoy the sunset. As the night falls, the beach is still lighted from the reflections of the restaurants lightings.
At night, you will enjoy a cultural and native dance show (which its so amazing to watch). Its out in the open air restaurant, diners and passers-by can enjoy the shows.
Can't really describe much in words....need to come and experience it!
The sunset and breeze..... you need to imagine while taking this picture, it was so relaxing.....
This is the beach like any other beautiful beaches.... A place to stop over when you are in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
Rania....... trying to tame the waters!!!!

Have you booked your trips yet, some of the replies I have had on this forum have been from guides, but difficult to know what to do and if they are any good, certainly they are enthusiastic ! Hope you have a great time.
Hi,
I emailed Tanjung Aru regarding the Tanjung and Kinabalu wings and how much would it cost to upgrade to the tanjung wing. This is what i got back .that Kinabalu wing(Superior or Deluxe room) more to hotel type however Tanjung Deluxe(Old wing and newly renovated) are more to resort taste. Should you require an upgrade to tanjung Deluxe room an surcharge at RM150.00++(10% service charge and 5% government tax) per room per night on top of the agent rate.

hello,
thanks for info on Tanjung Aru, We are booked into the Horizon floor, so still not sure which rooms they are,I have tried asking and they assure me they are the best rooms, but they seem to be saying that about all the rooms.! Anyway hopefully we will all have a lovely time whatever. Have you tried the Shangri La website , where you can do a virtual tour, including the rooms? This is good , all the rooms look great. Thanks again for letting me know, have you booked your trips yet?

Hope, Tanjung Aru is a nice place. I'll be there from 6th to 12th of Feb, staying in Shangrila Hotel. Would you VT members suggest me good restaurant or makan stall nearby, Halal food. Touring centers around, that can visit during 5 to 7pm, take photos during night times. And lastly, bowling center. Ty
Plenty of food stalls within walking distance of the hotel-all halal and at the main eatery (sugar Bun) they tend to have some shows at night. it's pretty much right at the beach too. with bowling-go to CPS Bowling at Centre Point shopping complex (8th floor) but it can get full at night with competitions.
The Tanjung Aru states it has Internet Access in rooms, does anyone know if there is a charge for this service if you have a laptop.
Thanks
Good news, I heard that all guest rooms include complimentary High Speed Internet Access (HSIA). Therefore, it's free. Cheers :)
