Lovely Shangri-La!

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on January 7, 2005

We stayed 3 weeks at the Tanjung Aru. Our overall impression is very high. Beautiful hotel, magnificent pool area. Nice rooms with a beautiful view. I turned ill twice and I got lots of attention. We needed medical service wich arrived 20 minuts after we asked for it. Very nice staff. Lots of activities. Nice personal service at the restaurants and from the maids.

Unique Quality: There are many good things to say about this hotel. Too many to name them. We will go back next christmas again to stay for another three weeks. Our son misses the great poolarea the lovely staff and all the great things about this paradise called Tangjung Aru. We are so greatful for this lovely experience.

This hotel is suberb.I cannot fault it in any way.The staff friendly and can not do enough for you,and always with a smile. We took our 4 year old daughter, who enjoyed every minute. The kids pool has a sun cover which is brilliant for those hot sunny days. The kids club has everything children like from computers to painting. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

Unique Quality: Our room overlooked the pitch and putt and had a great sea view. Also we could see the islands from our room. The health suite was great. We also had relexology done round the pool...out of this world.

Directions: 10 min from airport and 10 min from centre of town.

Great Location!

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)

Wonderful Place! The lobby is totally open air, no walls to surround you, here. The pool was magnificent, and the beach is within a stones throw from the pool. The rooms were especially nice...the bathroom was awesome...very modern with a frosted glass wall into the bedroom and they had mood lighting...if you're afraid of the dark and a seperate shower and tub with complimentary bubble bath!
The grounds were lovely, and the food was awesome!
We took a ride over to Shangri La's other property, The Rasa Ria Resort, to visit thier Orangutang preserve. They have 3 baby orangutangs that live on the grounds and they are CUTE! It's a steep climb, so wear your walking shoes if you go.

Unique Quality: Sunset beach at sunset, is of course, just awesome...have a cocktail at the bar,and sit back and watch the sun sink into the sea.
This is also the hotel that the crew and contestants from the first 'Survivor' episode, holed up. You can take a 30 minute boatride there.

Short trip from SIN, Brunei and others

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on September 26, 2004

Get the membership for a free breakfast or money off the full buffet.
Food is great, service excellent. Babysitting has always been avaialble and the ladies are well experienced -- not to worry about. Especially good is that you can have a great night on property, let them know where you plan to be and if anything comes up they will contact you ASAP.

Unique Quality: Pool, views, service...
Especially the attitude -- no hurries, relax & enjoy.

Don't go into the city, rather depressing.

A good night there would run between 100 to 150 USD/night, including all meal costs.

Directions: near city & airport, on the coast

My favorite resort in Asia

I visited the hotel back in 1986, when it first opened. It is now more developed and the town has lost its charm. But, on a quiet morning, its still great.
I like my resort quiet, so I like to have the hotel get me a day's food package and arrange for my dropping off in some remote beach; which meant, completely alone for the day.
This is NOT recommended for sexy young ladies, even if you have a big strong boyfriend. Remote locations are still dangerous in that part of the world.

Luxurious & Child Friendly Getaway

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on July 19, 2004

Beautiful surroundings, many photo opportunities for you and the children.
Sweeping views of the sea and nearby islands.

The rooms are well appointed & newly refurbished. You can request for an extra bed for the kids at a small charge or they might enjoy sleeping on the well-carpeted floor using the existing bedding.

The kids (and you!) will enjoy the big bathtub and nice range of shampoos & conditioners & bath foams (Lavender...yummy)

Just for Mums:
You can relax at the gardens or by the poolside with a drink at hand or under the shade, with a good book while the kids enjoy themselves at the playground (Starfish area) or at the Kids Club. There are ample deck-chairs on the beach and also on the lawn.
You can also have a soothing massage or warm spa at the fitness centre.

Shopping Tips: The hotel gift shop is pleasant and prices were actually quite reasonable (even the jewelery and clothings were not too expensive - RM200/US$50 for a string of salt-water pearls). There is also a very upscale Jim Thomson Silk boutique at the hotel, and a travel agent too.

There is a nice fish-pond with golden, red and silver Japanese Koi (carp) and the kids will enjoy gazing at the fish.

The marina has a chain railing and pathway that is child friendly, so you will not have to worry about your little ones accidentally falling into the sea.

Unique Quality: Great views from the higher floors. The hotel is close to everything and also near the airports.

Price stated below is on a per person basis for Malaysian residents (twin-share) and came with breakfast for two people (Breakfast is quite expensive if you pay for it on an ala carte basis). Nevertheless, I felt that it was worth every penny!

If you prefer not to eat at the hotel, you can take a slow 15 minute walk along the public beach to the nearby hawker centre (opens till midnight). There is a good range of fast food and local hawker fare. Perfect for you and your kids!

Or if you have more time, visit SEDCO for some fresh seafood (RM12 by taxi into town, just mention SEDCO and the taxi will know the place.)

Directions: 5 mins by taxi from both airports (there are 2 terminals in KK, one for Ais Asia, and the other for MAS flights)

Rediscover Romance at the Shangri-la

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on July 19, 2004

Luxurious & well-appointed room, bathroom and a large balcony. The gardens are mature and lush, and from the 3rd Floor onwards you'll have sweeping views of the sea and nearby islands.

The swimming pools were perfect for a midnight swim, warm even at 2 am...and towels are still available!

In the evenings and at sunset, the mood is unbearably romantic. Stroll along the marina with your loved one, and stop for a lingering drink at the Sunset Bar.

At the charming & intimate Italian restaurant, Peppino's, choose a table outside on the balcony, in order to enjoy the balmy tropical nights. The food and house wine are good value, and service is polite and pleasantly unobtrusive.

If you are not in love already, you will be!

Unique Quality: A fantastic resort hotel with full amenities, and the best thing is that it is only a short taxi ride from KK town (RM10-12 per taxi ride).

The other option is to take a short 15 minute stroll along the public beach and you will find some food stalls. Why not sample a variety of local fare (satay, noodles, local drinks) late into the night.

When we stayed, the price was around RM250-280+++ (twin share) per room. Sorry, I am not sure if this is available to foreigners. It is certainly well-worth paying extra to stay here, rather than at the hotels in KK town. I absolutely loved this hotel!

Directions: A stone's throw from both airports (one for Air Asia and one for MAS), so there's no need to rush to the airport. You can spend more time at the resort!

Walking distance to hawker stalls at the public beach.

Only 10 minutes from KK town (RM12 by taxi)

This hotel is simply fantastic ! The whole hotel is fantastic with rooms of very nice views. It is located next to the sea and close to the famous Tunku Abdul Rahman Island. It is located off the city & near to the airport. The setting makes one really feel like on a holiday !

Unique Quality: Located at the Tanjung Aru suburb near to the airport at Kota Kinabalu, state capital of Sabah in Eastern Malaysia.

My favourite hotel anywhere

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on May 16, 2004

Staying in this hotel is like coming home for me. I felt very comfortable the first time I stayed and more so on the second occasion.
Set in many acres of landscaped garden the hotel has two wings with all the main services and amenities in the centre. Check in is fast and painless with very competent, well trained staff. We were soon off to our room and while we were wondering at every luxury provided our baggage was being brought in.
We upgraded our room to a suite and it was well worth the extra few pounds to do so. Our balcony had a wonderful view out over the islands of the Marine National Park.
Food & Drinks tend to be a little pricey but the breakfast buffet was simply superb as were all the meals we sampled.
Swimming pool is simply huge and there are plenty of loungers and towels.
There is a regular coach service into town from the hotel.

Unique Quality: The staff are extremely friendly and sincerely want to make your stay a memorable one. Nothing is too much trouble and the hotel has a no tippping policy.
Very highly recommended for a very relaxing break.

Luxury from the moment you arrive. Baggage whisked away and check in formalities are conducted by an extremely helpful and efficient staff. Upgrade your room if you can. We got a suite for about £15 extra per night and it was well worth it. Everywhere you go in this hotel the staff are smiling and wanting to help you to have a good stay.
.

Unique Quality: The hotel has extensive grounds to stroll in and plenty of restaurants to eat in. Food is of top quality everywhere. Enjoy a drink at sunset on the headland and watch the sun go down over the islands of the marine park.
Huge swimming pool with attendants. I enjoyed a wonderful leg and foot massage bvy the pool.
