What is best - joining a package tour to Sukau or doing an independant tour?

by 47170094a

Hi,
I have read some old comments saying that it is better to join a tour rather than doing an independant tour to Sukau. I plan to book accomondation at Sukau Greenview B & B in advance and then decide on trips when we arrive. Would that be as good or better than signing up for a whole package tour in advance? I prefer not joining a pakckage tour but if the value is better in terms of better guides, more wildlife to be seen I would go for a package tour. Please share your experience with me.

Thanks in advance

they are very professional and well organized, they have also a sort of HQ at Sepilok. No worries and no problems with them.
Better you book in advance.

There are a number of lodges at Sukau. We used Borneo Eco Tour's Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Essentially, when you book with any of the lodges, you get transportation there by boat, etc. Effectively, it is a tour.

There are excursions from these lodges into the wilds. Leech socks are a must.

Travel Tips for Sandakan

Maternal bond

by zrim

Mothers will care for their offspring for about eight years. Unfortunately, there is still the danger of poaching. Unscrupulous poachers will kill a mother orangutan in order to kidnap the young orangutan. It is still a badge of honor in some circles to keep young orangutans as pets. When they get older and are no longer suitable for living in or around a home they are discarded or killed.

The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center cares for orphaned orangutans and they are lovingly taught orangutan skills by the dedicated staff. A two year old orangutan will not develop skills necessary to survive by pure instinct alone. Just like humans, most of the skills that an adult orangutan possesses are learned rather than inate.

Nests

by zrim

Orangutans live 99% of their lives in the tree tops. They do not call any one tree or group of trees home, but are fairly nomadic, searching the jungle for the ripe and succulent fruit. In mid-afternoon the orangutans thoughts turn to the problem of where to spend the night. Each orangutan will find a likely tree and begin to prepare a nest. The orangs then commence the breaking of many branches and the building of nests. It is truly incredible to watch an orangutan tear apart the upper reaches of a tree and build his or her nest. The orangutan may stay in the nest a couple nights, but they build on average a couple hundred nests in a year. I wonder if the nest building helps the trees thrive as a form of pruning.

Birds Salivas Is Prosperity

Gomantong Caves generate revenue?

Gomantong caves famous for Bird's Nest (a local delicacies). It's actually a Bird's SALIVA, can be found hidden parts of the cave. Cost of bird's nest may varied from RM100 or above depending on the type and quality.

Now, regards to the cave, it's not an impressive cave to explore but you do find some species of birds & bats in their habitat.

Best way to get there?
By coach tour - advisable at a small fee, private tours can be arrange. All ground arrangement easily book from local agencies tours in sandakan town.

Journey, only takes abt 1 1/2 hours or 2. Depending your coach SPEED!

See the Proboscis Monkey via a mangrove boat ride

by julianw

This must be one of the best eco-tourism activity that you must try in Sandakan. Consult your lodge/hotel information services to enquire about the trip up-river to see the Proboscis Monkey. A 4.30pm tour would be most ideal, and if you are lucky, you can even spot the monkeys leap into the river and swim over to the other side of the bank!

Sepilok- Orang Utan

by ronnielcm

One of the must do activity in Sandakan. You can go by mini bus(make sure the mini bus stop until the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre)1hour and taxi( cost around RM22/ one way) 45min.
Feeding time: 10am and 2.30pm
