Bilit Village Homestay: Living with the River People in the Borneo Jungle

Instead of staying in the lodges to explore the jungle, we stayed with a local family in their house next to the Kinabatangan River in the jungle of Borneo. It was wonderful, we had lovely traditional homecooked food - 3 good meals plus snacks - as the family got on with their normal life around us.

The price was also good around 360RM per person for 2 nights, all meals and cruises & treks; and around 55RM for additional nights. Bilit is up river from Sukau and not quite so far to travel.

Zul is the co-ordinator for the village, he picked us up from the bus route and acted as our personal guide on our river trips and jungle treks. The local people here are the Orang Sungai (river people) and excellent at spotting the local jungle wildlife. Zul was great - he found elephants, crocodiles, monkeys, hornbills, lizards; he made us feel at home in the jungle and spotted loads of animals. Throughout, we felt happy to be with such friendly people and to be helping their natural village lifestyle to have a chance of continuing.

Home-stay Programme

Well, I've pretty much say what I wanted to about the homestay programme on my Sukau Intro page. I think I'm spoiled with the convenience of the city, or better hotels I been to before. But just for the experience. 1 nite at the homestay programme is suffice. Don't put yourself thru the 2nd nite. Could use a better bed at nite.
We were charged RM380 per person for 3D2N, everything included, 3 boat rides on the river, land/river transport to Sandakan. I don't think it's a good deal. How about you?

Unique Quality: The family we are staying with are helpful, even more attentive to our needs.
