A beach and sunsets to remember!!!
by chrisevo about Shangri-La Rasa Ria
The Shangri-La Rasa Ria is typical of the Shang resorts. We found that the food was plentiful, the accommodation more than adequate. If you like golf, the adjoining golf course is a great palce to spend a few hours 1 afternoon.
Although the Shang is 40 minutes from downtown KK, a free shuttle bus continually does the round trip from the Resort to KK. Even if you elect to eat in KK one evening, you can still catch the shuttle back in time. Orangutan sanctuary, beach front location, beautiful sunsets and

there are various hotels and resorts in KK town but we chose to stay at the Rasa Ria resort...it's about 40 mins by bus from downtown Kota Kinabalu...it has a golf course around...a very nice beach...the food was good as well...there is a restaurant called "the sampan" right next to the beach...u can get a nice drink and some good food there...both asian and western...there is also a restaurant where u can have breakfast buffet and dinner buffet...right next to it is an indian restaurant....on the other side there is a fancy restaurant called "the coast"...where u have to dress up a little bit (no sandals or shorts) to get in...and as u can imagine it's pretty expensive....the hotel room was nice...had everything we needed....overall we give the resort 9 out of 10....very satisfactory...
Borneo's gem

Absolutely wonderful. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The setting is perfect and all the facilities needed are provided. Rooms are amazing. Most amazing beach. Everything is outstanding, I could just go on and on. They have their own little Orang Utan sanctuary.Has the best restaurant in South China Sea called Coast. Must try the sunset horse riding on the beach.

I would HIGHLY recommend either of the Shagri-La's resorts. The Tanjung-Aru was where I stayed and I also went to the Rasa Ria....both are spectacular. I went on a package deal so it was pretty reasonable all together. You can find the info about them on the web. Also their buffet breakfast was incredibly yummy! Rasa Ria has an animal sanctuary out back with baby and full grown monkeys (orangutangs) which they show twice a day. This is why we went to visit the Rasa Ria.
Rasa Ria Hotel -- beautiful...

Rasa Ria Hotel -- beautiful grounds, delightful rooms -- kind, friendly staff.
Sorry -- this was part of a package -- I do not have information. Onsite orangutang refuge -- Very remote -- walking distance to golf course -- can get room with breakfast and dinner included (good food -- very good variety). Views of forest or ocean.
The luxurious side to Conservation
by Firestar24 about The Rasa Ria Resort
The Rasa Ria have signs around the beach area of scary monsters with huge teeth. These are pictures of sandflies. Jonathan was introduced to quite a few sandflies during his stay and they gave him little lovebites all over his legs :)
Welcome to the Environmently sound Rasa Ria Resort. They don't believe in spraying their pristine white beaches with chemicals so that the wimpy tourists don't get bit by the big, bad midges - they believe that the sandflies have as much right to enjoy the beach as we do!
They also have their very own 64-acre nature reserve complete with rescued Oran-Utangs who await transferal to Sepilok for Stage 2 rehabilitation. You can arrange with the hotel to watch them at feeding time and then go on for a Jungle trek through the Reserve's grounds.
Saying all this, The Rasa Ria is a luxurious hotel which has definately earned its 5 stars. The whole place is immaculately kept and fresh flower arrangements are skillfully created every morning along the main stairway and awarded exotic names. The rooms are beautiful, spacious, split-level afairs with lots of satin cushions and soft lighting. The staff are amazing and the service is unique in that they will do ANYTHING to make your stay enjoyable. This Resort is paradise. I've never stayed in a hotel to equal it.
Laundry is returned gift wrapped with pot-pourri, Peacocks stroll through the landscaped gardens, they have their own riding stables for sunset rides along the beach, a helicopter to show you Borneo from the sky, every staff member will smile and stop to say "Salamat-Patang", food is always available at the highest standards - even at 3am (yes we did try this once - sorry).
They have everything you need in this resort. A handy hotel shop sells Jonathan's beer and my Sabah tea, milk & chocolate biscuits! They also have..... QUAD BIKES!!!! YEY!!!!! That makes this officially my favourite hotel in the entire World.
And the best thing is - everyone is welcome here. Everyone is treated like royalty - there are no exceptions.
Thumbs up for Rasa Ria

Just arrived back from a 4 night stay at the Rasa Ria, upon arrival we were checked in promptly and were shown to our room. Rooms were beautiful and the view of the ocean was spectacular. We saw 2 of the most amazing sunsets i have ever seen, whilst sipping cocktails at the bar. We ate at all four resturants and loved them all, our favourite was the Indian!!
The resort is kept spotless, the staff were very helpful, the beach was nice but the pool was far more refreshing. Get to Rasa Ria now, it is the only Hotel on this stretch of beach...........but not for long!!!!!!!!!!! My only complaint was the "Happy Hour" was a bit of a sham!!, the price works out to be about a 20% discount off normal prices, it should be 2 for 1 like everyone else??? All in all i would recomend The Rasa Ria to anyone...Thumbs up!!
Rasa Ria Is The Most Family Friendly in Asia
by A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Rasa Ria Resort in Kota Kinabalu in early November 2005. Although it is considered the rainy season, we had five great days with sun/cloud well into late afternoons before a little rain did fall - - did not interrupt our plans whatsoever.
The resort did a terrific job - - we had a suite and adjoining room for parents and four kids (age 6-10) which was spacious and worked well for us. The outdoor facilities were great with pool, very nice beach (very good sand, no rocks, pretty mild waves for kids), a playground including in-ground trampoline, and a kids club which was always staffed and quite active. Next door is a nature preserve with six orangutan living in the wild which can viewed during feedings. There is also an 18 hole golf course on the same grounds.
The best deal for families is the price - - rooms are more than competitive compared to other Asia resort destinations (Phuket, Bali, Danang) and the food was remarkably reasonable - - on top of that, the Rasa Ria gives the kids Free of Charge buffets when eating with their parents which we used for all breakfasts and most dinners. There are four dining facilities (Coffee Terrace, Pool/Makan outdoor buffet, Coast - Californian, and Naan - Indian). The staff were always super at every moment of the day and handled special requests (like early morning coffee waiting for others to wake) with no problem.
Kids had fun - - not only did they meet and play with a lot of other kids at the pool and playground but they had their hair beaded, rode with Dad on jetski, rode horses on the beach, danced during the local culture show, hit golf balls at the driving range, and built sand castles - - was practically the perfect break and a destination we will consider coming back to.
Highly recommended.
Penang's best hotel
by junwen about Centrally located in the city
I have found the Shangri-La Penang to be one of the best hotels in Penang. It's a typical 5 Star hotel (though some aspects of service not as expected) with a great location. Many splendid eateries around (yum yum!), as well as convenient access to shopping centres. Free shuttle to Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang or Golden Sands is great, as you get to enjoy the beach and its beautiful pools (really enjoyed the wonderful pool at Rasa Sayang)
and inter-signing service allows you to dine without cash, just use your room card.
Great hotel to stay in if you want to explore the city and enjoy the beach as well. Free shuttle to sister hotels, Inter-signing benefits, central location

How to Get to Shangri-La Rasa Ria from AirporT
by Lucy-
Hi everyone,
I have booked to stay in the Shangri-La rasa ria for 6 nights in June. What is the best way to get from the airport to the hotel (I am guessing the hotel transfers are a bit of a rip-off!) are taxis readily available and if so what can I expect to pay.
Thanks a lot
Lucy

The hotel should have pick-ups which I suggest you use. Taxis are available no problems. No idea on payment. Recently meters were made compulsory in taxis but previously there were set rates. KK airport is poorly set up to handle these matters.

We found the pickup from the airport was significantly more expensive than the taxi, which, as I think was mentioned in the other reply, are regulated (there is a fixed rate from the airport to the resort, which is about 30-40? minutes away).
I recommend taxi. The drivers can also tell you all about KK as you drive.
If you want then, you can take advantage of the hotel's shuttle between the two resorts to get into KK.

Hey VTers
Thank you so much for your previous replies.
Has anyone stayed at the above mentioned property or location before???
If so, what are your thoughts on this location and property???

I haven't been to the resort but from the Google Earth images & photos, I don't see any crystal clear water surrounding that area. Even Nexus Kamrambunai having better beach than Shangrila from the GE images but still not crystal clear water.

Rasa Ria in Aug/Sep
by Noryb
Am planning to travel solo to Rasa Ria resort for a week in either August or September this year, but am concerned about the weather in these months. Am keen to know if the rain/thunderstorms are continuous during the day in these months and how much sunshine there is. Would be keen to know if it only rains for an hour or so each day or all day. thanks
