Mulu National Park: My Deluxe Longhouse Room

by AlbuqRay

When I looked for lodging at Mulu, I saw that most people on VT have stayed in the Royal Mulu Resort. Since Mulu has become a popular tourist destination, the Royal Mulu has become quite expensive (RM348). The Treetops Lodge in Miri suggested I check the lodging available at the Mulu Park headquarters. It turns out that they have some very nice options. The Deluxe Longhouse rooms are air conditioned with ceiling fans and ensuite bathrooms and offer a combination of double and single beds sleeping 2 - 4 persons. Rooms are serviced daily and have tea and coffee making facilities. The price begins at RM164 twin share and includes breakfast. They also have Rainforest rooms with ceiling fans, single and double beds and ensuite bathrooms starting at RM100 twin share and includes breakfast. There is also large fan cooled dormitory with 21 beds and shared bathrooms; beds cost RM37 per night, which includes breakfast.

Since I knew I would be wanting air conditioning by then, I went ahead and reserved a Deluxe Longhouse room, even though I was by myself. BTW, it turned out that the rate was reduced to RM152 for one person occupancy. The rooms were very comfortable but could have had better lighting. The bathroom was in a separate room that had exterior access (but you could lock that door). It was reasonably clean, had two sinks, and had three different cubicles for a cold shower, hot shower and toilet. I do have one warning about the Deluxe Longhouse Rooms. I noticed that the window locks do not work! I did have something happen that I shall document in a Warnings or Dangers tip.

Besides being the closest place to park headquarters where all the tours start, because the lodging is inside the park, you only have to pay one park entry fee (RM10/day or RM5 if over 65). It was really nice having an electric kettle in the room. Not only did I have hot tea and coffee, but I was able to boil water, let it cool overnight, and fill my water bottles the next day.

Tenyok Rimba Resort: Suspension Bridge

by AlbuqRay

A suspension bridge connects the "chalet" side to the "guest longhouse" side. It is possible to drive a 4WD down the hill from the main arrival parking lot to the end of the suspension bridge. This helps since everything for the guest longhouse must be carried across the suspension bridge. See also the videoclip taken from the middle of the suspension bridge.

Tenyok Rimba Resort: Views and Boardwalks on the Chalet Side

by AlbuqRay

The chalets and main building are all connected by boardwalks. Although the lower buildings would not be handicapped accessible, a couple of the chalets by the arrival area looked like they could be.

Tenyok Rimba Resort: Chalets and Main Building

by AlbuqRay

The Tenyok Rimba Resort arrival area is on the "chalet" side of the river. It may have been busy in the past, but it looked like it is hardly used now. I did not see the inside of a chalet but they looked like small self-contained cabins from the outside. See also the videoclip taken from the chalet side.

Tenyok Rimba Resort: Our Guest Longhouse Room

by AlbuqRay

Nuh and I shared a large room in the guest longhouse. It was the first room as you entered the veranda (the one with the open door in the picture). It had a fan and a separate bathroom. I think it had a hot water shower but I don't really remember. There were several windows but they all had screens. All you had to do was close the door and there was no problem with mosquitoes. See also the videoclip of the Tenyok Rimba Guest Longhouse.

Tenyok Rimba Resort: Kayan Guest Longhouse

by AlbuqRay

Tenyok Rimba Resort is a community project located in the Tenyok Rimba Reserve. This tiny reserve was set aside for the Kayan community by the company that logged it in the late 1980’s – 1990’s. It is in a beautiful setting on the clear Tenyok River with two waterfalls just upstream. There is a "chalet" side on one side of the river and the "guest longhouse" is across a suspension bridge on the other side of the river. The resort was relatively busy on the guest longhouse side, but the chalet side did not look like it had been used in a while. I don't know the price to stay there because it was included in my tour. Note that electricity is from a generator which they do not turn on until ~18:00 and turn off ~09:00 the next morning. That means that the fans only operate in the evening and at night.

In some ways Tenyok Rimba totally met my expectations (e.g. beautiful jungle setting and waterfalls, friendly people and Kayan dancing); in others, it did not (e.g. loud karoke music until 1 AM the first night). However, overall I really enjoyed my stay and would like to return. Three days is not nearly enough time to do everything I wanted to do. It will take several tips here and under Things to Do to document my stay. Check the videoclips and travelogues too, especially the ones about Borneo bugs. With the lights being on at night, Tenyok Rimba attracts some very unusual bugs.

Singgahsana Lodge: The friendliest hostel in asia

by WearyBackpacker

If you stay in Kuching you must stay here. Staff amazing - Richard will show you all the best places to eat, drink and club. Shared rooms or private. Wonderful local ethnic furniture and art everywhere. Owners are regular travelers and their wonderful pictures around the walls are from all over the world - they know what a hostel needs and have done their utmost to make it "home" for backpackers.

We spent 12 months backpacking through asia/australia/new zealand/samoa and this was the best hostel of all.

Amazing rooftop bar and chill out area done in the style of a longhouse. Music, bar, pool, table footy, widescreen tv, loads of DVD,s and great views across Kuching.
