Kuchings best Hotel
IT IS NOW CALLED THE GRAND MARGHERITA HOTEL....
We had a very enjoyable stay here.
The Hotel is right on the riverfront, so make sure you request a room with a river view, I did, and was so glad, as there was lots happening on the river.
Every evening, dragon boat crews were practising for an upcoming festival.
Our room was large and nice.
Breakfast was a buffet, very busy, with a good choice, hard to get a table sometimes. Service at this Hotel was good.
There is a travel agency in the Hotel, this was cheap and good. Of the 3 tours booked with them, twice, we were the only people on the tour, and the other time, only had one other couple with us.
The location is excellent, just straight across the road from the Hotel, is the main shopping centre, only a very short walk to the riverfront walk, and it is located right on the riverfront.
Directions: By the Cat Statue
Location, location, location!
The great location is only the beginning of thinks that make this a great place. They offer everything a business or tourist would want or need.
Clean, good service and reasonably priced doesn't hurt either.
For the person on vacation, the famous cat stature is just outside the front door. The river is right out the back door. Food, shopping and culture are all in easy walking distance.
While they charge for in room internet service, it was dependable and decent speed.
The gift shop lacks a bit, but has a nice little assortment of gifts, along with snacks, and anything you may have forgotten to pack.
The tour office is a one gal office, but she's good. Willing to book solo tours, or will try to find a group if you wish.
Unique Quality: The breakfast buffet is truly international, with something for everyone.
Room service is fast, with meals prepared correctly and served hot.
The riverside view is wonderful.
Directions: Center of town. Any taxi driver will know where it is.
Unique Quality: A hotel that you will not miss because it is strategically located right in front of the cat statue at a roundabout. The interior or lobby is not very spacious but it exudes a warm local charm with wooden decor.
There's a link bridge connecting this hotel to Sarawak Plaza. Other shopping malls like Riverside Complex and Tun Jugah Mall are just a stone throw away. Fast food outlets like McDonald's and Pizza Hut are in the vicinity.
We arrived on a building site, there upgrading the riverside which had a massive impact on the hotel, and worst of all the pool was closed. There was an upside because they upgraded us to a suite of rooms which was very nice. It was what you would expect of a Hilton although clearly not at the top end of that particular franchise. My only real grip were the reception staff who although efficient didn't exude and warmth at all. This is worthy of note becuase for the level of service I was used to in KK I was taken by suprise. Also they were in marked contrast to the concierge who couldn't do enough for me and always made the effort to remember my family name. Not bad for a malay given my scottish surname.
Unique Quality: It's central, there are plenty of places to eat and the concierge service is first rate.
Luxury Hotel by River Sarawak
The Holiday Inn Kuching Hotel is a riverfront hotel, located on the banks of River Sarawak, in the heart of Kuching business district. You can see the picturesque Sarawak River and the colourful Malay villages from this Hotel.
The Hotel has good local and western food served in the Serapi Restaurant, Meisan Szechuan Restaurant, and Orchid Garden Coffee House.
I have stayed in this Hotel during my visits to Kuching, and I find the place to be good. If you are visiting Kuching and staying in Holiday Inn Kuching, ask for the room with the river view.
Unique Quality: Hotel Holiday Inn Kuching has 305 furnished rooms, including suites and an Executive Club Floor. All rooms feature double or king size beds, individually controlled air conditioning, private bathrooms, hairdryer, minibar, tea/coffee making facilities, in-room data port, IDD telephone with voice message system and TV with satellite news and entertainment channels.
The Hotel has a swimming pool, fitness centre, sauna/steamroom, and entertainment lounges.
by the Sarawak River
The hotel is a typical Holiday Inn, very touristy, not really luxurious but not bad either. Very well to be used for a short stay of 2-4 days.
It offers relatively comfortable rooms, nice views to Sarawak River and the Fort, a gymn with sauna and an outdoor pool. The restaurant is rather basic, but offers good malay food!
Unique Quality: Nicely positioned by the river, relatively cheap
Directions: The only hotel directly by the river
The Best Riverview in the City
This is my choice of hotel when I travel with kids. I will choose a room facing the Sarawak River. I just love to watch the river, the scene of boats passing by and the kids from the village accross flying kites... my sons love it here too. This hotel is very convenient for shopping too because the Sarawak Plaza is just next door and Tun Jugah Mall and Parkson are just across the road. As for food you can get KFC, McD, Pizza nearby and food court are at the Tun Jugah Mall.
Unique Quality: Such a great river view and great housekeeping!
Nice Hotel! Great Location.
I was there for 4 nights and it is a very nice hotel. The pool is fine and the location is great. Check prices on their internet for the best deals. My room was not ready at check-in time (11:30am), so they upgraded me to a riverview suite! Fantastic room, great staff...
Unique Quality: Great river view, nice pool, great location
Centrally located 4 star Hotel
Holiday Inn - 4 Star
Central location, ajoins the Sarawak Plaza. Has a view of the Sarawak River and walking distance to most shops and museums. Has a pool (Outdoor) and staff are friendly. Beds are king sized for a deluxe room. So can sleep 3 comfortably. The Damai Lagoon and Damai resorts all come under the Holiday Inn group.
The outdoor pool is nothing to write home about, espcially the small size of it but it is right by the Sarawak River.
A general note: I have also discovered that if you go and book the hotels through a travel agency, it actually works out to be cheaper than the advertised costs on their website. Furthermore, there are two prices, one for the local and one for the oversea market. I'm talking not specifically about this hotel but in general, hence if you can get someone local to book the hotels for you, it could work out cheaper.
Unique Quality: By the Sarawak River and it's central location. The outdoor pool is situated next to an outdoor restaurant where functions and special dinners are held.
Directions: Next to Sarawak Plaza in the main city by the Sarawak River. It is one of the main hotels in Kuching so everyone knows it.
a Holiday Inn in Cat City
Built right on the river, this is an older hotel that is still very comfortable and quite well maintained.
There are Huge Statues of Friendly Cats outside the hotel, wishing you a warm welcome to the hotel.
Its coffee house & lobby/music lounge are popular meeting places among locals as it sometimes features a live band.
This comfortable, reasonably priced hotel is popular with local and foreign tourists.
The Clark Hatch Gym and its pool attracts locals members and visitors.
Unique Quality: Walking distance from key attractions such as the Main Bazaar and Kuching Waterfront. Also very convenient for food.
Delightful scenery: Overlooking the Sarawak River and Fort Magherita and some old kampung houses.
Rates are reasonable RM170-200 (twin share per room)
We stayed here on our first visit to kuching. The Hotel is a tower block with a pleasant swimming pool on the bank of the river. Our room was quite adequate containing all of the amenities expected from it's class without being too inspiring. A typical business class hotel.
Food and service were both good without being too over the top, the breakfast buffet offered a good selection and other meals we took were well cooked and presented.
The hotel is nicely located near to a shopping mall and has a nightclub in the car park!
Unique Quality: Nice views across the river.
The only TRULY riverside hotel
The Holiday Inn Kuching says it is the ONLY hotel in Kuching to be really riverside- and yes, the only thing that seperates the hotel from the riverside are the raillings- giving this hotel an unrivalled locality in Kuching. This is one of the oldest hotels in Kuching, even its newest wing is 19 years old. Its lobby is old and faded, and is in need of a major facelift- and the manual sliding doors seperating the lobby from the pool don't add much to the ambience of the lobby. There are some native crafts which are commendable in the lobby area, as well as the usual marbled floors and teak- what stands out is the service which is superb. 4 stars, awarded by Tourism Malaysia, proudly shine at the reception.
In the old wing, the lift lobby is in need of refurbishment (2001) - the carpets are in need of change as they were already fading and peeling at ends. However, once you reach your room door- this hotel doesn't seem old at all. The rooms have been newly refurbished, and could easily match those of entry level 5 star hotels. Nicely furnished, with rattan furniture, these rooms exude a warm feeling of comfort and luxury. The bathroom is also commendable, white marble around, albeit on the small side (probably due to room category). Touch panel by the bedside means no more hanging "Do Not Disturb" signs on the doors, or "Please Clean My Room".
As mentioned earlier, the hotel has a swimming pool, overlooking the river, gymnasium and sauna. An executive club floor is also available, with standard club facilities like a lounge, express check in and out and a private breakfast venue, as well as evening cocktails.
There are 3 F&B choices in this hotel- The Serapi where breakfast is served daily, Meisan, a Chinese Restaurant and a basement bar, Tribes.
All in all, this hotel offers good value for money, rooms and service of high standard,in addition to its prime location, although certain public areas are in need of upgrade.
Unique Quality: The only hotel where you are right beside the river, nice rooms and great service.
Directions: Just by the riverside, opposite Tun Jugah shopping centre and Kuching's famed Cat Statues.
Very Strategically Located
This hotel is located in the city center, very near to the main city atttraction, the waterfront, Tun Jugah Shopping Centre, Sarawak Plaza and other attractions.
Unique Quality: There is a pool but it doesn't look very well maintain, but the good part of this hotel is that if you are staying in a room just above the reception or lobby, you will get wi-fi connection in your room.
Directions: It located next to Sarawak Plaza or opposite of Tun Jugah. There is also a McDonalds opposite of the hotel.
International Class Hotel...
Right at the heart of Kuching city, next to Crowne Plaza Riverside Hotel. Overlooking the Sarawak river, Malay village and the surrounding city area.
Unique Quality: 24 hours Coffee House, Restaurants, Lounge, Gym, Swimming Pool, Children's Playground, adjacent Shopping Complex.
Directions: Next to Sarawak Plaza Shopping Complex and directly opposite Standard Chartered Bank.

Kuching Local Tours and Hotel Advice
I have two questions and would be gratefuk if you could help me to answer:
1) Do you know any tours in Kuching and how much do they cost? Such as to national parks, adventures etc. I read CPH is one of the travel agencies does this type of stuff, and I would hope to hear your advice/suggestion.
2) We are spending 4 days in Kuching and plan to stay at two hotels, both Holiday Inn. We are deciding between Crown Plaza Riverside, Holiday Inn Kuching, Holiday Inn Damai Beach and Lagoon resort. I do not know which ones are better for value? Also we want to spend three nights in one hotel and one night in another. So whether, 3 nights in Crown Plaza/Centre or 3 nights in the beach side? Which arrangement would be better for exploring Sarawak?
Many thanks for all of your help in advance!
