Well run, clean hostel
by MJIM&PM
Great town and ideal place to arrange travel to Mulu National Park and to Bario in the highlands. Stayed at the The Highlands hostel in Miri, worth checking out if after good , clean accommodation at reasonable price. The owners were very helpful & obliging. If you go up to Mulu then a good guide for your stay is Phillip. Should be able to contact him from The Highlands Hostel. Bario is worth a few days. Plenty of home stays. Stayed at Nancy's and also Reddishes. Both good places. We found Miri a nice small city. Good staging point to Mulu, Bario and onto Sabah.
Wild fauna
by DanielF
It is not only about bats in Mulu National Park. It takes time before you get used to seeing the wild fauna in the rainforest, even if there is plenty of it!
This small iguana, however, seemed to be more curious about us than we were about it. It followed us until it decided we had taken enough pictures of it.
Why not Scuba Diving in Miri?
by Lexpat
Miri may not be the most popular place for diving in Malaysia and that's fine with me, we will keep our secret place out of the crowd of the scuba diving industry. still, if you are a diver passing by Miri, the experience is worthwhile trying because Miri has many reefs dives to offer from 10m to 40m waterdepth and there are untouched.
The shallow dives will give you the macro experience including a large variety of nudibranches. The deeper dives 25-35m will show you large corals and school of fishes such as barracuda. All can be rented on site with Tropical Dives center

This restaurant branch from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah has a wonderful selection of fresh seafood which is still swimming in the tanks before ending up on your dinner plate. Situated 20 mins from Miri town, this lovely restaurant is right by the beach where you can you get beautiful sunset views while enjoying your seafood meal under a Borneo-inspired pavillion.
The food is great, without question. You can select your dishes when you arrive from the tanks along the pathway to the tables. Choose from fresh groupas, shrimps, clams, oysters and vegetable grown in Sabah or Sarawak
Prices are higher than what you can get in town but with the atmosphere and freshness of the food, it's worth it

Miri Esplanade
by longsanborn
The Miri Espalade is located at Luak Bay, in the outskirt of Miri city, by the coastal highway. One has to drive to Tanjung Lobang, go over the hill and then drive down towards the Teacher's College campus, pass the little bridge and you will come to a long stretch of open area, planted with many coconut palms, facing the Luak Bay beaches. The Espalade is a good place for casual family meetings, evening relaxation, family outings and romantic rendeavours. People gather here in late afternoons and evenings to enjoy the ocean scenery, ocean breeze, jog along the beach, watch beautiful sunsets or have picnics on the weekends.
