Re: seahorse

by christabal

In 1994, the Sea Horse was adopted as the official mascot for Miri.

Sea Horse has a unique, beautiful and distinctive figure, its gentle and charming nature has often been used by the people to denote many good values in life such as caring for each other and possessing an upright character. It also symbolizes harmonious relationship and peacefulness. As it is living in the sea, it signifies Miri's close relationship with the sea, coral reef and a resort paradise.

Travel Tips for Miri

Best Time to Visit Miri

by longsanborn

You can visit any time of the year. We don't have any 4 seasons here.

But the best times of year to visit are March to August and October - November because there may be problems with the smoky haze caused from forest fires and clearing in Kalimantan during August-September.

Tipping

by longsanborn

The custom of tipping is not practised in Malaysia. To tip or not depends entirely on you.

Most hotels and large restaurants have already included a 10% service charge in addition to the 5% government tax to the bill (indicated by the ++ sign on menus and rate cards) so tipping is unnecessary.

However, if you are happy with the services provided, say in the restaurants, it is no harm tipping the waiters/waitresses (usually, they are paid low salaries and they will be happy to get some extras).

Niah National Park

by Willettsworld

Miri is the perfect base for exploring Niah National Park which is located on the Sungai (river) Niah, about 3 km from the small town of Batu Niah, 110 km to the south-west of Miri itself. The park was first gazetted as a National Historic Monument in 1958, and opened to the public as a national park on 1st January 1975. The Park is one of Sarawak's smallest, but it is certainly one of the most important and has some of the most unusual visitor attractions. The park's main claim to fame is its role as one of the birthplaces of civilisation in the region. The oldest modern human remains discovered in Southeast Asia were found here making the park one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Forty thousand years ago, the Niah Great Cave sheltered human life along with many other relics of prehistoric man. Today the cave is home only to bats, swiftlets and other specially adapted forms of life.

The famous Painted Cave is another highlight of the Park. Here, little human-like figures drawn in red haematite watch over a gravesite where the bodies of the dead were each laid in its own boat-shaped coffin. The caves are accessible via a raised plank walk that winds through lowland forest vibrant with birds and butterflies from the park entrance and headquarters. New Mediterranean restaurant & bar

by BorneoGrrl about Slippery Senoritas

Surprise, surprise, I found this newly opened restaurant in Miri. Slippery Senoritas is a restaurant franchise also in Kuala Lumpur & Penang. This place serves good Mediterranean & Italian dishes and cocktails in a pleasant if not sophisticated environment

Service is also good here, you can expect friendly & efficient service from the staff. While I was there, I was informed that a salsa club will soon be opening next to it so anyone who want to practise a little salsa & enjoy the latin nightlife can go here

Welcome to the new Miri! Creamy soups & sweet desserts e.g tiramisu
Mojitos & wine :)

Crocodile Farm

by haydnesque

If you want to see tons and tons of crocodiles. go here! They don't have only crodociles but also exotic animals such as bears, monkeys, wild cats, strange birds, etc... and in the end of the tour, it's nice to refresh your bodies with a cool, fresh coconut juice.
