Money changing
by BorneoGrrl
If you're here for the first time, it is advisable for you to buy your ringgits or RM from the banks because you know you'll get a fair rate. However, there are a couple of money changes in town which can also give you a slightly better rate. These money changers are more keen on USD and Brunei dollars, so should you have either, you won't have a problem. The worst places to exchange money is the hotels and the airport because the exchange rate will be low
Working Hours in Miri

Miri runs on a normal eight-hour working day system with Saturdays as a half-day workday and Sunday as a day of rest.
All public service departments and some banks usually close on the first and third Saturday of the month.
Private sector hours are generally from 9am to 5pm (Monday-Friday) and 9am to 1pm (Saturday) while government office hours are usually from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Many private sector companies operate on a five-day week.
Most shops and shopping malls are open from 10am to 8pm (Sunday-Friday) and from 10am to 10pm (Friday - Saturday).
Bekenu beach NO resort
by Lexpat
A beach not only beautiful but where you may very well be the only one in the water.
Bekenu is a village located at about 50' drive from Miri. Just before the village, a road to the right will take you to very scenic beaches, easy to access and just waiting for you to be discoverred.
Take everything with you because there is almost nothing there. Though you may buy fruits and local food at the local village market.
Should you fancy the experience, ask a local fisherman to take you for a ride along the coastline. Cheap if you bargain.
For back packers, YES you may consider camping on site.
To get there, you may arrange a taxi from Miri to drop you and pick you up.
Affordable & yummy seafood
by BorneoGrrl about New Tanjung Seafood Restaurant
You can tell by now that one of my favorite food is seafood. This is a typical chinese seafood restaurant located just outside the city center in Tanjong Lobang. This trip, I ordered buttered prawns, clams, local vegetables and rice. There are some live seafood swimming in tanks ready to be cooked for the freshest dishes. Food quality was good & fresh, and all this at a low price ~ less than USD10 per person
You can either sit indoors or outside under the sky, which was what I did. Seafood!!!
Tua Pek Kong Temple
by Hewer
You'll see this place of worship if you spend any time wandering around the city centre of Miri. Referred to by locals simply as "Chinese Temple", Tua Pek Kong is a colourful temple with many interesting murals, carvings and statues. It was only built in 1910 and is a well-established part of the city's character.
If you're in town, go to the big ceremony held there every year on Chinese New year's eve.
