by ganapa2000

Hi,

Please suggest the best shopping places around Kuala lumpur.

You could check out Central Market for great bargain especially souvenir and all. But I guess the cheapest should be in Petaling Street. But if you are looking for a good quality stuff, they shouldn't be at that place. Just have a look at Cetral Market first. It is not that far from Petaling Street.

Wholesale market, you can try Jaya Jusco or Tesco as well. They are also cheap....

Hope it helps.

you're looking for Carrefour, Harvey Norman, Mydin....
so you're looking more for price, aren't you?
as already suggested night market or chinatown you get very cheap clothes.

inside previous posts you were looking for TV set... Sony
btw if you are looking for a Sony matters don't go to Sony's shops, At the time I've been there they could not make a big discount, better go to some other shops selling Sony to pay less, that what I found when I've been looking for lens for my camera and those were originals, not fake, as I checked it on Sony's site. Probably Carrefour and Mydin might have promotions when you'll go there.. is Harvey Norman present also in Malaysia? I don't remember I saw it.

it seems you're coming from Australia, if it's true remember it's not easy to bring home and not pay customs in Oz, they look also for apples :)

Supermarkets in Malaysia are now into selling electronic goods so yes Harvey Norman, Jusco, Tesco, etc..

You may want to check out Courts as well. Also for electronics; cameras, laptops and mobile phones, check out Low Yat Plaza at Bukit Bintang.

Dependent on the time of year you are in KL, look out for the mega sales where most stores offer huge discounts.

At Petaling Street, please put on your bargaining cap and beware of imitation goods but there are bargains to be had if haggling is your cup of tea.

Travel Tips for Kuala Lumpur

Foreign exchange

by vpas

Go to an american express money changer in the airport ,they do not charge any commission while converting other currencies into ringits. So you will not lose any money. Moreover you can change any amount you wish and there is no minimum amount that is mandatory if you change it at the airport. Thus it is reliable and you get a good rate and the best part is no commission.

ABC Market & Fiesta Nite Market

by beachboy

Mont Kiara markets are wonderful place with an eyeful of good buys under the sky. ABC market is held every Sunday while Fiesta Nite Market on every Thursday. With music in the air, the ambience is free- spirited and further complemented by cooling fans.

A muddy river

by DanielF

New buildings have mushroomed in the city center, close to the river where the first settlement occured. However, since the Asian crisis severly affected Malaysia, many important urban developments and projects came to a total stop in the last years.

When asking for directions...

by allyson31mtim

When asking for directions, keep this cultural phenomena in mind: Malaysians will give you directions to whatever you ask for even if they do not know where it is! This is extremely frustrating when you need help finding things. If someone says "i think" or they say "it's just up there on the left" 9 out of 10 times, they do not know where it is. My fiance and I spent so much time following wrong directions. It was extremely frustrating because it was very hot, humid, and we couldn't find what we were looking for. It's best to ask at your hotel or ask a taxi driver. We had the best luck asking for directions from these sources.
