Equator Village: Resort with history
by Gillybob
Found on the Maldives' 4th largest island of Gan, Equator Village offers one of the only resorts in the Maldives with a real history. Until 29 March 1976, Equator Village was the Sergeants' Mess and quarters of RAF Gan, a Royal Air Force Staging Post.
These days, this is an adequate and reasonably priced 3* resort offering a different opportunity to experience the Maldives than that found elsewhere. Here, there are no beach bungalows or water villas, instead you are accommodated in the former Sergeants' quarters which are rows of rooms set out within a tailored garden area.
Rooms are adequate and have air-conditioning and ceiling fans, double beds, chairs, occasional table, dressing table (with stool), wardrobe and en suite shower rooms with WC.
Within the building that previously housed the Sergeants' mess you will the reception, TV room, bar and main restaurant. Adjacent to the main restaurant area is the resort swimming pool.
I stayed all inclusive in February 2011 and had an excellent stay. Included in the AI package is one island hopping excursion and twice-daily snorkelling trips (although these are sometimes limited when the larger boats are being used for island hopping).
There are five beaches to the resort, some of which are more accessible than others. The house reef is good and offers a variety of sealife for the avid snorkeller.
Housed within the old hospital, you will find the resort dive school.
Being a 3*, the AI offerings aren't as extensive, but I was there for the snorkelling and the resort excels at this! I went out on the snorkel boat twice during my visit and really wished I could have spent longer and gone out more. I really enjoyed our session at Viligili (a neighbouring resort island) at low tide when the water was beautifully clear and the reef teeming with sealife!
AI included meals in the main restaurant as well as local brand alcohols and beers and the Cocktail of the Day.
As the island of Gan is on the most southerly atoll in the Maldives, a 1.25 hour domestic flight is required from Male International Airport. Staff from Equator Village will meet your flight on Gan and transfer to the resort is by minibus.
At Equator Village, you are given the opportunity to experience real Maldivian life. Addu Atoll (now Addu City) has a number of islands joined by a causeway and the resort offers free use of bicycles for its guests to go out and experience these islands.
Souvenir shops are also located immediately outside the resort, encouraging guests to venture off the resort and mingle with the locals.
