Father and daughter in front of their home ger by anzzz The locals in Mongolia usually live in gers, only very very few people live in a house. Every year people pack their ger and all of their animals and stuff and move to another spot. This happens at least twice a year. On several tours organised by guest houses you have the possibility to sleep at the locals' gers. This experience is not to be missed!
The facilities are poor in the sense that there is no shower or toilet. But still, you have to see this! You get to see how the locals live which is an amazing experience. Theme: Other

by grazy56 In Mongolia now you can find in the area most visited tourist camps. Generally they are expensive (30/50USD/person including meals) GENERAL DESCRIPTION FOR TOURIST CAMP IN MONGOLIA The tourist camp respect the traditional habitat and they are compose with different ger the same used by nomads, inside you will find 3 small beds, outside a big ger is used for restaurant and you will find a house with toilets and showers, all is really clean and can worth to go after 2/3 weeks on the steppe without taking a shower. better to have $ to pay on toursit camps now often you can find also some nomadic family TC less luxury maybe no hot water but worth to stop too around 10/15$/p/night DESCRIPTION GENERALE DES TOURIST CAMPS Les tourist camps se presentent comme des campements de yourtes. Contare circa 20 a 50 $/notte/ p. cena inclusa.

by jorgblaser That was our "hotel" and that was great ! You have a fire in the middle and somebody comes every morning to heat it. The food was very nice too. Theme: HotelAddress: Nature Tours Ulan Bator

Cheap and genuine. People are friendly and will give all they have to you: food, cow *** or wood for the stove, 'conversation', tobacco... Theme: OtherComparison: least expensiveDirections: Anywhere around the countryside. Avoid town hotels or any kind of accomodations. Except at Ulan Bator, you'll never get hot water, so better get a bath in a river or lake than in a cold hotel shower.

by Tom1971 Ger's are a lot more comfortable than I had thought, and the family I visited in Terelj were very hospitable. In Ulan Bator, I stayed in the Palace Hotel which was pretty good. If you are staying for a month or more, apparently renting an apartment is the cheapest option. I paid for all my accomodation in one go, along with my guides fee and train tickets from China/to Moscow, so I don't know how much it all breaks down to exactly. by sjung In the Terelj Nature Reserve, there are a pile of tourist camps, where you can stay in a ger. The camps are not exactly 'roughing it', but are actually quite comfortable at around US$15 a night. I stayed in a place called Terelj Juulchin Tourist Camp. The chef in the restaurant invited a few of us to her family's ger for a traditional meal of Boutz and vodka/beer. There is a local bus that goes between Ulaanbaatar and the Terelj. I believe you can catch it from Sukhbaatar Square. I took it to get back to UB, and it cost 2000 Tgt. Theme: Campground

Mongolian Ger by kiwigal_1 This is me infront of a ger (otherwise known in the western world as a yurt. This is a traditional Mongolian house still in common use all over Mongolia. I recommend staying at least one night in a ger when you stay in Mongolia. They are very comfortable and have beds and a stove inside. Ger's in the city will also be equipped with electricity. Terelj - Ger by nepalgoods In Terelj is a hotel, where you rent those gers to stay over night. Gers are the traditional huts of the Mongolian people. You can also stay in the normal buildings of the hotel. But sleeping in the ger is a great experience. Not really comfortable but nice and warm. I stayed together with some people from USA and Europe together in one ger. It was freezingly cold outside. Every hole to outside was closed and the coal oven was burning in full heat. I think my headache the next day came from a toxication of the smoke. Theme: Other
