Central Post Office & Communication Centre
by Willettsworld
This large building on the south-western corner of Sukhbaatar Square is the main post office and communication centre. You can make phones calls (which are a lot expensive than via internet phone places such as the one on nearby Baga Toyruu near the UB Guesthouse) and use the internet (which again is a lot more expensive than internet cafes around the city centre). It has a good souvenir/mobile phone/stamp shop at the back which is worth a look around.
Naadam Festival - Archery
by Willettsworld
Archers use a bent composite bow made of layered horn, bark and wood. Usually, arrows are made from willows and the feathers are from vultures and other birds of prey. Traditionally dressed male archers stand 75m from the target, while women archers stand 60m from it. The target is a line of up to 360-round gray, red and/or yellow leather rings (known as sur) on the ground. Usually there are only about 20 or 30 rings. After each shot, special judges who stand near the target (but miraculously never get injured) emit a short cry called a uukhai and raise their hands in the air to indicate the quality of the shot. The winner who hits the targets the most times is declared the best archer or mergen.
Go out, stay in a ger and experience Mongolia
by victorwkf
The real Mongolia is really outside Ulaanbaatar and it is a must to travel outside to experience to open plains, rolling green hills, stay in a Mongolian ger, go horse-riding, meet the nomads etc. Trust me it will be a really unique and unforgetable experience.
Pizza! Even in Mongolia
by happyhourkid about Planet Pizza
This was one of two pizza places we frequented in Ulaanbaatar, the other one being Pizza Broadway. Planet Pizza is definitely the more "Fast foodish" of both of them, and a little cheaper also. Not the best quality ingredients but if if you like your pizza thick crust style, you'll be happy. After all, pizza's pizza. don't get your hopes up-No Chinggis beer to drink with it : )
National History Museum
by yumyum
I don't usually like going to museums so much, but this one was fascinating. It had a bit of everything like stuffed animals, a ger (yurt), some history and of course the big dinosaur skeleton. The museum also has a café (on the balcony in the dinasaur hall) if you need a rest like I did. There is an entry fee.
Also on the next block north there is the Natural history museum.
