Zaya Guest House Bed and Breakfast BnB

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on March 5, 2015

On arrival Ulaanbaatar, we were picked up by a service car which we arranged through Zaya Guest House no.2 (as there is also a Zaya Guest House no.1) which is located on a different street . This is a bed and breakfast accommodation and is popular. They have spacious bedrooms and very clean rooms . The shared shower and toilets were just outside our room ( The shower is so spacious and is separated from the toilet).

The lady who managed this guest house is also named Zaya , She is a Mongolian lady who is Russian educated with a degree in economics at a Moscow University. We found out through her that many young Mongolians were sent to Russian Universities in the 70's and were separated from their families during the Russian occupation of Mongolia.

We occupied room no.10 and it got a veranda. For a price of US$ 15/ day (year 2010) including continental breakfast we couldn't ask for more. An elevator lift is an access to the 4th floor but there is also a stair which is easy to walk up and down. The deal here is if you stay more than 3 days your breakfast is included . But if it is only for a day or 2 Breakfast will not be included.

The manager Zaya is an excellent host and very friendly to guests, taking time to assist in day trips, getting to the airport or train station, and open to discussing many topics.

There is also a very nice restaurant downstairs named Tse which sort if does "fusion" food.

Unique Quality: Very spacious shower room with huge round shower sprinklers.
Very clean and the continental breakfast is good.

Directions: • 18kms from Chinggis Khaan International Airport

• 4 minutes walk from State Department Store
• 12 minutes from Sukhbaatar Square

Excellent Guest House

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on August 19, 2014

This guest house made an excellent home base for my 2+ weeks in Mongolia. I was here for brief stays three different times in June/July, 2014. The hostel is owned and operated by two brothers who have lived in the US and speak perfect English. In contrast to many tour operators in Mongolia, the owners of Zaya's answered my e-mails promptly, fully, and intelligibly and did exactly what they said they would do. My room was reserved as planned, drivers appeared to pick me up for trips to and from the airport on time, and my plane tickets were purchased in advance for a modest service fee. They even arranged for me to attend a performance of a Mongolian dance troop, band, and singers. I discovered only after arrival that they can also arrange many other services in other parts of Mongolia, a fact I wish I had better understood in advance.
Zaya's is conveniently located on a side street near the center just off the city's main street near several good and moderately priced restaurants. It occupies a whole floor of an old apartment block from the communist era, but everything has been nicely, if simply, redecorated. A good breakfast is included in the very reasonable prices, and there are a variety of bedrooms, including one with private bath. The dining room and guest lounge are great places to strike up conversations with guests from all over the world. During my five days there, I encountered travelers from Germany, Japan, Canada, Italy, the US.
I have only one reservation about the place. The owners are only intermittently present, the remaining staff speak only limited English, and they owners did not always appear at the times they had told me or staff they would. This led to my spending time waiting for the owner to appear that could have been put to better use. It was of no concern to me, but some people might find the hard mattresses undesirable.
Overall, however, Zaya's was a very pleasant experience, and I gladly recommend it to others

Directions: A short block north of Peace Ave; 12 minutes west of Sukhbaatar Square
