Hotel Heritage Home: Pretty Pathetic service

by amolk_2210

Frankly I did not enjoy my stay in Hotel Heritage Home in Thamel, Kathmandu. It's supposed to be a budget hotel, but in spite of that, they need to maintain the hotel a lot better than they manage to do. To begin with, we were supposed to be picked up from the Kathmandu Intermational Airport on arrival. The Hotel cab was missing. After a lot of haggling with the local cab drivers ( there was a general strike when we reached Kathmandu on 17.05.2012), he managed to drop us to the hotel. It wasn't easy finding the hotel as well, as their local number, provided on the confirmation voucher, was seemingly not working.

We later learnt that the phones in the hotel do not work when there is no electricity. After some argument, the hotel manager decided to pay the cab driver for the fare paid by us.

There ar no ceiling fans in Kathmandu in general and no AC in our rooms. So it was an ordeal to remain in the rooms during the day, as it gets pretty hot in Kathmandu during the month of May. There was one small table fan, which was hardly good enough. The toilets / bath area is also pretty pathetic. The shower did not work and there were no taps in the bathroom. The towels weren't that clean and had some kind of an odour to them, making us wish we had got our own towels.

The breakfast was included in the package. The menu card said, we could order our choice of eggs. As it turns out, it was their choice, which usually prevailed, as whatever we ordered was never available.

We were booked through 'www.yatra.com and can say that they did try to cut big corners, in offering an attractive package deal to Kathmandu. NEVER STAY HERE.

The hotel is located in Thamel, which is the main place where tourists usually hang out. Pretty crowded place, but still has a lot of vibrancy around. There are a lot of good cafes, restaurants and shops nearby.

Hotel Shanker: Modern and Clean Western Hotel in Kathmandu

by leon.partsi

This is the hotel that was worked out for me by my tour agency. I stayed here a couple of nights before and after my Everest trip and have several nice things to say.

The service is 24/7 and top notch - they all seem to know me by name. I think this is because I went during off season and there weren't very many other guests around. The rooms are clean, modern, and above all warm - something you value very highly indeed if you've just come back from an extended trek.

The rooms all have king size beds and they are just as good as any beds back home. Depending on where back home is for you, they are probably better. Having a hot shower is a great choice, and the hot water never runs out. Which is good, because I wasn't moving.

Nice, long, strong pressure hot showers.
Comfortable soft beds with good quality linen.
There's a pool downstairs as well as a spa/sauna around the corner, but be prepared to pay a couple hundred rupee extra to use the sauna.
Food service is fantastic, as are the two bars downstairs. Drinks are tasty and they have mocktails in case you are about to start a trek and should not be drinking.
They prepare boxed and packaged breakfasts early in the day if you are leaving before breakfast starts. If you are there for breakfast, prepare to over-eat. Everything is delicious.

Snow View: Great trekking lodge in Gorepani

by cosmichoover

A lovely, cosy trekking lodge. Warm and clean with hot shower, friendly staff and excellent food.

Really good food, and a more varied menu than other lodges we stayed in. Infact, in a two week trip it was the best food we had in Nepal!

The Sunrise Lodge: EBC Trek - The Best Choice for Lukla

by into-thin-air

My final accommodation “Tip” for this trek is for Lukla and “The Sunrise Lodge”
This lodge is located in the middle of Lukla Main Street on the left hand side as you are heading towards the airport. Apart from this being a very nice lodge offering all facilities, the lodge owner has “Power” with the airlines and seems to have a lot of influence with them as to who flies on what flight.
The Lodge it’s self is very nice with nice large dining room, nice large bedrooms that sleep two with comfortable beds at 200NPR and a clean inside toilet as well as hot showers being available for 3w00NPR (I declined the latter as I would get a free hot shower back at y hotel in Kathmandu the next day.
Tasty food at reasonable prices available from the extensive menu.
Electricity in all rooms and battery charging available for a small fee.
After lunch I saw the lodge owner and he said that he would happily go with me to the airline office to help ensure I was flying the next day – He also said that he was suffering with tooth-ache so I gave him some high strength pain killers and he seemed really pleased. Both Shambhu and myself were confirmed on the 0800 Agni Air flight with a reporting time of 0700, so with nothing more toi do I had a wander around Lukla, then had an early dinner and told Shambhu I was heading to my bed and to make sure I was up around for about 6 so as to have time for a bite of breakfast before heading to the airport. I had been in my room for about ½ an hour when there was a knock at the door, Shambhu telling me that we had to report at the airport at 06.00 – I ended up on the 1st flight of the day which was at 07.00 – And all for a couple of pain killers !! Like I said at the beginning of this tip, The Lodge owner of The Sunrise Lodge in Lukla Does seem to have “Power” with the airlines – is any more proof needed.
So I Heartily recommend The Sunrise Lodge in Lukla ;-)

The Pokhara Lodge: EBC Trek- Good choice for Lausasa

by into-thin-air

As my trek-mates had elected to spend a night at Gorak Shep and were planning on going up Kala Pattar and spend the following night at Lobuje and as I had already been up Kala Pattar on my previous trek, I decided to head back down. As I was now trekking alone with my Porter/Guide I had no restrictions on the length of my trekking day so decided to put a long day in and to get as close to Namche as Possible.
I got as far as Lausasa (Which is less than 2 hours trekking from Namche Bazaar, so I was happy with my days trekking. I elected to stay at “The Pokhara Lodge”, Quite an old lodge but with nice bedrooms with comfortable mattresses, Dining room with fire and inside toilet
I paid 200NPR for my room but negotiated a free re-charge of my camera battery
Electricity in all rooms and Tasty food at reasonable prices available from the extensive menu.

I would recommend “The Pokhara Lodge”, to anyone wishing to stay in Lausasa.

The Sherpa Lodge: EBC Trek - Good choice for Lobuje

by into-thin-air

Lobuje had changed out of all recognition since I was last there in 98, it was then just 2 single story Bhati type lodges where as now all the lodges are two stories and there are at least twice as many of them !!
We opted for “The Sherpa Lodge” on the recommendation if our guide Tej. Nice rooms that sleep 2 people with comfortable beds at 200NPR, Dining room with fire and again Tasty food at fair prices available from the extensive menu.
Electricity in all rooms and battery charging available for a small fee.
Clean inside toilets.
As I had been suffering from a few minor breathing problems in the night since going above 4000m, I decided against staying at Gorak Shep (The highest lodge in the Everest area at just under 5200m) and therefore elected to trek a long day from Lobuje to EBC and return to Lobuje for a second night – Anyone in a similar position would be wise considering doing the same.
I would say that “The Sherpa Lodge” is a good choice of places to stay in Lobuje.

Tip Photo
The Yak Lodge: EBC Trek - Recognised at Dhugla ;-)

by into-thin-air

As we had pushed on the day before we decided to only trek a short day to Dhugla. There is really only one choice of lodges there and that is “The Yak Lodge”, I had stayed here back in 98 and unbelievably the lodge owner recognised me. The lodge was unrecognisable as it had been completely rebuilt, then it was a very simple affair and now it is an excellent trekker’s lodge offering all facilities.
Nice rooms that sleep 2 people with comfortable beds at 150NPR, Separate dining room with fire also outside eating area. Again, Tasty food at fair prices available from the extensive menu.
Electricity in all rooms and battery charging available for a small fee.
Clean inside toilets in both the accommodation building and off the dining room.
I recommend that trekkers split the day between Periche and Lobuje and stay at “The Yak Lodge” at Dhugla

Tip Photo
The Nagarkot Lodge: EBC Trek - Good choice for Periche

by into-thin-air

As we were reasonably pre-acclimatised from our Arun Valley Trek we put in a longer than usual day and trekked to Periche – Here we chose “The Nagarkot Lodge” which is the first lodge in the village as you head up. This is an old lodge but still a nice one with a large dining room with fire, good bedrooms that sleep two with comfortable beds at 100NPR per person (We actually took separate rooms so 100NPR for a room), a clean inside toilet
Tasty food at fair prices available from the extensive menu.
Electricity in all rooms and battery charging available for a small fee.
I have no hesitation in recommending “The Nagarkot Lodge” for anyone staying at Periche.

Tip Photo
The Everest Rhododendron Lodge: EBC Trek - Great little lodge in Debuche

by into-thin-air

We opted to stay at Debuche for two reasons, firstly that that we were told the lodges at the more popular Tengboche don’t look after Nepali trekking staff very well and secondly that all the large groups stay at Tengboche, So as Debuche is only another 20 minutes walking downhill it seamed and indeed was a better choice.
We opted for “The Everest Rhododendron Lodge” which is a delightful little lodge with a nice large dining room with fire, nice clean bedrooms that sleep two with comfortable beds at 150NPR, a clean inside toilet and run by a friendly hospitable family.
Tasty food at reasonable prices available from the extensive menu.
Electricity in all rooms and battery charging available for a small fee.
I would recommend anyone wishing to avoid the crowds also trek to Debuche and “The Everest Rhododendron Lodge” make an excellent choice of accommodation there.
Another “Tip” would be, if like us when you walk through Tengboche the clouds are down obscuring the views then to make the short trek back up there the next morning to take in the excellent views – This is exactly what I did and I certainly wasn’t disappointed ;-)

Tip Photo
“The Pasang Lodge”: EBC Trek - Simple Lodge at Namche Bazaar

by into-thin-air

The metropolis of Namche Bazaar hit me like a Slap in the Face, especially after the simplicity of The Arun Valley Trek; also having trekked through there in 1998 the changes over the last 14 years are immense as it has now more or less doubled in size. However I can see now how trekkers who have just flown into Lukla 2 days before are now eased very gently into their trek. There are now at least 3 bakeries selling everything from fresh bread to cake which can be washed down with “Real” coffee at prices of 200NPR and upwards per cup. Pseudo Irish Bars with “Happy Hours” trying to sell alcohol to trekkers at 3200m which will do anything but aid their acclimatisation – Oh Hum, I Must be getting old ;-)
There is an abundance of different standards, styles and prices of accommodation available from higher end lodges with private bathrooms with hot showers down to relatively simple old style lodges – We opted for a reasonable simple, reasonable priced old style lodge near the top of the village. We were the only trekkers staying at “The Pasang Lodge” which although it certainly wasn’t the cleanest lodge I have ever stayed, it did have nice bedrooms that slept 2 people with comfortable beds for 200NPR.
Large reasonable comfortable dining room, reasonably priced OK food available form a fairly extensive menu. Reasonably clean inside toilet, but 2 floors down from the bedrooms.
Electricity in all rooms and battery charging available for a small fee.
The best thing about this lodge is its location at the top of the village as this means it is quiet and it is ideally placed if you are trekking up to The Panorama Hotel at Syangboche as a day walk on your acclimatisation day
If you are looking for a simpler style lodge in Namche Bazaar and want to avoid large groups then “The Pasang Lodge” isn’t a bad choice.
