Travel Tips for Kathmandu

CIWEC

by josephescu

CIWEC clinic is used by most foreign residents in Kathmandu and by foreign tourists. The clinic is staffed by foreigners and a doctor is on call on the clock. A consultation 45 USD, CCs accepted.

I went there to get malaria pills (since i was going to the Chitwan for the weekend). however, the doctor said since its' winter time, there is no risk at all. However, i brought some pills "just in case".

Some other piece of advice i gor from them on Malaria
no tablet is 100% effective against malaria, thus avoid mosquitos, take malaria tablets reqularily and treat fevers immediately not after one or 2 days.
Most common medicines
-chloroquine and paludrine – 2 weeks before exposure and 4 weeks afterwards
-mefloquine – take weekly, 2 weeks before and 4 weeks after, 10 USD/tablet, difficult to find but most effective
-doxycycline – take daily, 2 days before and 4 weeks after
-malarone – daily, 1 day before and 1 week later, 7 USD per tablet www.ciwec-clinic.com
phone - 4424111
opening hours - 9 am – 4 pm 1 hour (lunch break from 12 to 1), Monday – Friday
location - just across the UK embassy northeast of Thamel

Refrain from buying malaria pills form the local pharmacy around the corner in Nepali cities…..reports say as per the tests performed, over half of them are fakes….Chinese gangs copy virtually all brands….. not even the shopkeeper knows whether he’s selling an original or a fake one…..with the risks of getting adverse side effects or even worse, malaria resistant viruses higher than ever.

Tuc Tucs.

by euzkadi

I know that tuc tucs are a cheap and very good way of transport, specially in crowded cities like Kathmandu, but the drivers are really annoying; sometimes you´re walking along a row of them and every single driver is asking you Tuc Tuc Sir? Common sense if i say no to the first one that means that i don´t need one...at the beggining is Ok, but after hours saying no, it´s really a nightmare.

Shopping for chrystals?

by Saagar about Nepal Cristal Shop

I put this tip under "art"... It may you like chrystals (mainly quartz) from a geological point of view or a by far more esoteric one; who cares, this shop had a good selection of fine chrystals. I thought they were nice, anyway, but i will leave to an expert to judge... Small and large chrystals, some set in jewellry metal. some real big and colored ones, too, blueish, pink and smoke quartz. Variable depending on size, quality and your ability to negotiate...

The Famous Mountain Flight: KATHMANDU

by goutammitra

While in KATHMANDU, it is strongly recommended that one should take the famous Mountain Flight, which takes you to Everest and other famous peaks. It's a life time experience. Don't' miss it.

There are two to 8 flights operated in the morning depending on the no of passenger on a clear day. The first flight leaves from Domestic Airport at around 6.20Am Kathmandu time and the last one is at 7.45AM. There are two flights announced on at 6.45 and the other at 7.45 but they make extra trips if the no of passenger are more.

It costs USD$ 100 for this one hour long flight in a modern Beech craft turboprop 16 seater plane. Each person is guaranteed a window seat and with my experience I can only say every penny is worth of this money.

You can book the flight over phone to Buddha Air and also pay by credit card. They will deliver the ticket to your hotel and also bring the card punch manual machine. A real home delivery and nice way to win the customer. Please call Mr. Karn or Mr. Diwakar over mobile for any assistance!

They also give a certificate on return.

A mix and match

by pankaj271315 about JatrA

Jatra means to travel. Located in Thamel, Jatra caters to both the tourists as well as the locals who frequent there. Weekends there is live music and some of the local frequent this as their meeting place after watching a movie or after dinner. The food served here are very good and I go there with my family as often as I can. Green Chicken, Salads, Chicken & veg Momos (dumplings), Sandeko sukuti (dried meat marinated in oil & chillies).
