Hallo!
Can anyone recommend a friendly, clean budget hotel in Kathmandu? Preferably not quite in the middle of the whole hustle and bustle, or a at least quiet one would be nice. And it being Tibetan family- run would be bonus.
I've stayed in Diplomat Hotel before and it was nice enough, but I found the owner a bit pushy.

Welcome to Nepal. Then please try Tibet Peace guest hous or Kathmandu Peace Guest hous. Both of them are located in Paknajol near thamel.
Both of them are very nice and famalier as well nice beautyful garden.

I stay in the Hotel Encounter Nepal just outside Thamel area. I used it has as abase everytime I came in and out of Kathmandu and never been disapointed. They will look after you.
It has two building where you can stay in and they have there own Internet as well.

I have just discover a new hotel this trip, Hotel Napalaya – I am actually staying there right now !! This is the Nicest hotel that I have ever found in Kathmandu, 16 years and 8 trips !!
They have a website if you search google, but if you want to get a substantial reduction of the web prices and a free airport pick up drop me a PM

Hey ... Via Via Cafe in Thamel area of Kathmandu is brilliant. Cheap rooms, good friendly staff, nice bar and alright food.

If you want quiet and away from the noise and congestion of downtown area (Thamel for example) then I would suggest the Happy Valley Guesthouse (apparently name has changed to the Valley Guesthouse) check out the link for reviews. Mine is 'quiet and clean'

Basically, there are three components to Kathmandu Valley. The capital city of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan. Each of them have Durbur square to which ancient activities were centered around. In all three cities, you can find intricate and exquisite examples of Newar architectures. Beautiful and well-preserved Newar architectures - window frames, statues and temples.
No, everyone here is not gay. It's completely normal for men to have close contact with each other. What you might do with someone you're dating is normal between male friends in Nepal. Don't act so surprised when you see it now that you know.........
Besides the famous Pashiputhinath and Swayambhunath, there are many other temples in Kathmandu Valley area. Explore the small streets and lanes. Many of temples found in this area are very old and you can admire the intricate or colorful design on the exterior.
Nepal Airlines are not flying at the moment, not that we were planning to go with them anyway. However as a result Thai air are booked up for weeks. Wayfarers came to our rescue and put us on a waiting list. We have waited for a week and now we are off. Wayfarers have been really helpful and honest. Other travel agents were still trying to sell tickets for Nepal Airlines, one said that he couldn't get us a flight for over two weeks.

Thamel area really caters to foreign tourists. In this section of the city, you can find number of hotels and restaurants. You can find not only Nepali delicacy, but also Indian, American, European and Chinese dishes. Most of them have more or less similar menu.
