Unrest in Nepal

by snowboarder74

Saw news about the Army Chief being sacked and now the Nepal PM has resigned. I wanted to get some local perspective as to how the travel situation is. Our trek for EBC starts in a week and we will be arriving into Kathmandu in about 6 day. Wondering if this issue is mostly administrative (and not spilled over to the streets) and are there any safety concerns?

thanks.

There is something like this going on in Nepal once or twice a year. If you wait for things to be calm, you might never be able to go except on the spur of the moment. I've been caught in the midst of a few minor and medium-sized civil disturbances in the KTM Valley, and actually thought it was fun. Get out there and enjoy your trek.

Thanks for the assurance, johnboy. I totally agree with what you said here "If you wait for things to be calm, you might never be able to go except on the spur of the moment." Spoken like a true road warrior!

We'll be there.

Totally agree with previous answer, I was in Nepal in the height of the troubles in 2006 and never once felt threatened – However I did have one problem and that was Insurance, The company that I had my annual travel insurance policy with told me that as there was a British Government warning to travellers against travelling to Nepal then I wasn’t insured – BUT I also wasn’t insured if I cancelled my trip because in their words I was “cancelling of my own volition” !!!!!!
Talk about Insurance companies having the best of both worlds !!!!
Anyway – I went – I was safe and Everything was fine !!
Good Luck

Travel Tips for Kathmandu

Prayer wheels in Action

by herzog63

Here you can see the lady spinning the prayer wheels. We are at the Monkey Temple! The local worshipers will walk around the entire temple clockwise and spin the prayer wheels while chanting. It is very interesting for me to watch but I don't really know all that is going on.

Holy animals

by Roggeveen

There is a lot of respect for animals. Certainly in the Budhist tradition. But the Hindu's also beleive in holy animals. That's why a cow can go whereever she wants. You'll find her laying around at the most unusual places, like here at the centre of tourism; Durbar square. The pigeons fill up the rest of the open space.

What is there to shop in Kathmandu? -2

by goutammitra about Hand Embroidered T shirt or Garment.

You find hand embroidered T shirs or other garments very attractive buy in Kathmandu. This is worth buying and the process takes about half a hour to about an hour by an expert using a Stencil. They are mostly Moslem artisans from State of Bihar, India. You just select the design and they will make it a ziff. You can watch them making it very fast. We bought three T. Shirts. They will ask for sky but will settle for much less. The T shirt I am wearing was quoted for Rs.450/- or 11 USD but I paid only Rs.100/- or USD 1.25.

Pashupatinath – Bodhnath

by josephescu

Maybe because I needed to further reflect at the powerful cremation ceremonies or just in need of fresh air to continue breathing, I took the walking path through the park uphill towards the Goraknath Temple and further on, to Bodhnath stupa.

A nice half an hour walk through the park, across the Bagmati river and through some calm and dusty backstreets full of pupils heading or leaving schools.

Authentic Thai food in Thamel

by chazgilbert about Yin Yang Restaurant

A highly regarded and very popular restaurant, and this is understandable with the huge variety of food on offer.

The menu is predominantly Thai, and we got to meet the Thai chef before we ate, so we knew exactly who was preparing our food! The food is a definite cut above the imitation Thai food availabe elsewhere in Thamel.
