Car Hire
by janetlee
We are a group of 6 persons. We are going to travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Can anyone advise me what will be the hiring charge if we hire a car/mini-bus on our own? Is there any good driver recommended?

No Problem
To do this you should go through a Recommended and Trusted Travel Agent. Stipulate the size and standard of the car you want, whether you wish the driver to be able to speak English and agree a price.
A medium sized car and driver for the Kathmandu – Pokhara trip starts off at about $100, Maybe about $120 to $150 for a mini bus with a roof carrier to take your luggage.
My favourite driver is Hari who has his own Toyota Landcruiser which would seat 6 comfortably with room to spare (Photograph in my transportation tips section) , he can be contacted through the agent mentioned below.
I would suggest that you leave Kathmandu early morning to avoid the worst of the traffic and the run should then take you about 6 hours.
For my own recommendation of a Trusted and Reliable agent please see the travelogue entitled A Very Important Decision on my Nepal page
I Hope that helps but if you need more info then drop me a line

Do also check the possibility of taking the Greenline Bus service, very comfortable, online booking possible. Guaranteed MINIMUM travel time to Pokhara (fast travel by mini buses and scheduled buses on this route are real killers).

Be very wary of advice offered by 1st time posters – Especially if they haven't build their home-page and double Especially if they just joined VT today and are selling something ;-)

Travel Tips for Kathmandu
Decorated buildings, the Akash Bhairab Temple
by sachara
At nearly every square meter there is something to see in Kathmandu, so you can easlily miss something. So I saw this beautifull decorated building not before the third time I passed.
This building is at Indra Chowk and it is called the Akash Bhairab Temple or Bhairab of the Sky Temple, which is actually upstairs. That's why I didn't notice the first times, because there are a lot of shop stalls at the ground floor. To enter the temple you have to climb the steps at the right side, but Hindus may not enter.
Thankas!
by Vija_v
Making thankas is very special thing which you have to learn for many, many years! I really dont know all the stuff about thankas, but they are made with special paints on the special canvas. There is 5 different styles for thanka and mostly they are connected with religion- Buddhism!
I can say that good quality thanka is really beautiful artwork and costs really big money.
Bandipur village
by akikonomu
A hilltop village with good fresh air and hardly a vehicle in sight. The vehicles stop outside the town and only a lorry or two are allowed into the town square.
Hike down the mountain and discover a cave which has not been fully explored.
There's also a silkworm factory in the village where you can see mulberries and even eat them.
Taxis
by nattybabe
Taxis in general are a little bit scary for someone who is not used to how Nepali's drive. The cars are small and generally run down and the drivers go like bats out of hell! Just hold on and you will be use to get to your destination.
Taxi drivers will always try to rip you off. Always make sure that you agree on a price before you get in NOT when you arrive. If it's too expensive, get out and try another driver.
Don't miss the Momo, lassi and other food
by KasiaWin about I have been in different restaurants ..........
It is a nice local restaurant worth to spend there a fifteen minutes and drink "Lemon tea" and eat an apple cake with chocolate.
Very tasty!!!! 1.Momo - paste with vegetables boiled or fried.
2.Dalbad - rice with vegetables or meat, souce, yogurth, fresh salad. You pay only once and you can eat like a horse!!!!!!!
3.Lassi - dessert . It's different fruits with kefir.
mniam,mniam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4.Bananas, apple or lemon pancakes - This is breakfast.
