Lhasa to Kathmandu

by Maximilian21

I will be working in Kathmandu starting late september and i was wondering if someone could help me out. I am am taking the train from Beijing to Lhasa then wanted to travel onwards to Kathmandu, either overland or by plane. Does anyone know whetehr the direct bus link is open to travellers or would i have to go on one of the expensive overland tours? If i took the flight option, how much is a one way to Kathmandu from Lhasa and how often do they fly?

Re: Lhasa to Kathmandu

The last I heard the Tibet / Nepal border was still closed due to Olympic Games. But even if it opens the rules are very complicated travelling overland from Tibet to Nepal, you need a Tibetan travel permit as well as your Chinese visa, You have to be part of a group, that group all has to be of the same nationality – and that’s just a few of the regulations !!
No bus service on this route – it was withdrawn after the massacre of the Royal family and never reinstated !!
I have written up my experiences of this trip on my Tibet page, you might find it interesting
It is a Great Trip – But in your case maybe better to fly !!
Good Luck
Rob

Travel Tips for Kathmandu

Movie Making in Action

by SLLiew

Not sure if this Bollywood movie making or local Nepali production.

The scene is real and the fist fight unreal. Lot of audience and tourists like me watching.

Hope to catch the movie if it has got English subtitles.

This is tip is really for hikers

by XKuger

Ensure that your bag does not exceed 15 kgs or they hit you with big overweight charges on local flights.

If you have an iceaxe pack it well or it will ruine your luggage Lot of hiking clothing is availabe in Kathmandu and no need to buy from the US/Europe if you don't really will no reuse it.

Its cheap and its functional for 20+ day trek after that the zips break etc,etc - what do you expect. Medical supplies are a must even though you can buy even prescription stuff over the counter. Its better to take stuff from here. Cut down on weight, try to keep to a maximum of 2 lenses if you are carrying an SLR. Avoid digital cameras as battries die quickly in the cold and re-charging is not that easy other than few tea houses I did an escorted tour so didn't have to care about this.

What is there to shop in Kathmandu? - 4

by goutammitra about Potha or Pothi-

Once in Nepal, you will always find that Nepalese women are very beautiful and wear colourful dress and simple jewellery. Almost 90% women wear Potha or Pothi ( See picture women wearing Tiluri of different colours). This is popular among married women, who wear it as a symbol of their marriage and long life for husband.
These are made of simple plastic beads and sometimes it is locked with Tilhari or Tiluri, a drum type ornament made of either brass or those who can afford make it with gold.

You may try it , may be for party wear or just as souvenier. You may also try it when you have the opportunity to wear Asian dress. It goes well with Sari or any Asian dress! This is very cheap comes for Rs.50 to Rs.1000/- ( USD 1 to USD 20) depending on the quality.

Everest beer is the best

by bluedook about Rum Doodle

Good food. Great beer (Everest). We went as a group and sat on the roof. Lots of paper feet on the walls of past visitors. Food cheap but beer expensive (as in all Nepal). Apparently if you have climbed Everest you can eat for free.

Open-Air American & Mexican

by chazgilbert about Northfield Cafe

The open-air atmosphere and huge courtyard-style surroundings makes the Northfield a popular tourist trap, especially amongst those who love breakfast. A large pleasant garden is another pleasant feature. Cheeseburger and chips - cannot be beaten!
