Choose a hotel in Katmandu (Utse, Vajra or Kantipur Temple) ?

by Vincent75

I will be in Katmandu from February the 4th to the 16th to visit my sponsored tibetan children. I hesitate beetween 3 hotels: UTSE - VAJRA and KANTIPUR TEMPLE HOUSE... They all offer good discounts and accomodations but I would be very happy if anyone could help...

Thank you in advance

The Hotel Vajra is a wonderful hotel. I stayed there last February and I would highly recommend it. The staff is very helpful, the rooms are clean and taken care of. The restaurant and the rooftop patio are lovely. You can hear monks chanting from the rooftop in the morning. The hotel is a bit of a walk from the main shopping area of Thamel, but in a way that is nice, because it is nice and quiet. I don't know anything about the other hotel you ask about....but my vote goes to Hotel Vajra....when I come back there sometime, that is where I will stay. I hope you have a great trip...it is a beautiful, amazing country.

Travel Tips for Kathmandu

Walking in the streets, fruits & vegetables

by sachara

Walking in the streets of Kathmandu you will see a lot of streetvendors selling vegetables or fruits. I saw a surprisingly great choice in delicious fruits and different kinds of vegetables. The fruitstalls were looking very colourful and inviting. On my way back from the old city centre back to the guesthouse I bought most of the times some fruits like grapes, oranges or something else.

Hiking Everest Base Camp.

by Deepakmainali

Hiking Everest Base Camp.
Mountain Everest is world famous peak and to do hiking up to its base camp is the matter of proud and dignity. No matter, how far you are living, if you desire to see this world top peak near by you that desire will drive to you to its lap. This peak is in Nepal. You have to fly first to kathmandu from your home town. Kathmandu the UNESCO world heritage site and the capital city of Nepal. You have lots of tourist hotels for your comfortable accommodation here in Kathmandu. As per your interest and time, you may choose to go to Everest Base camp after any day you are in Kathmandu. Easy way to go there is by domestic flight to Lukla which will take about 35 minutes and then you have to walk 8-9 days to reach the base camp of Mt. Everest. You can come back within 6 days to lukla. So, it is the trip of about 14-15 days. Sleeping bas, good trekking shoes, hat, sun cream, sun glass and camera. You can buy or hire these equipments in Kathmandu or bring by your own.

The North Face - the real one ...

by Saagar about Thamel Area, North Face

The North Face outlet on Tridevi marg is the only official dealer in Nepal. That means, most of the other North face stuff is either second hand or fake. In my opinion North Face isn't a particular good brand for my uses, but I occasionally buy clothes there in lieu of anything better. Too much fashion, too little function, occasionally.

The stuff here is mostly surplus production sent over from factories in Asia, and you may not find the items in contemporary catalogues. They will normally not have the same products coming in again if they have sold out. Nearbu is the sherpa Outdoor store, a local production just as good and the moeny stays in the country... , and United Brands and a few others. So you can compare goods and prices. I like their shirts. The price level is at the high end on the Nepali market, but fairly cheap from an American or European point of view. You can equip yourself for half the price of what you do in N. America and Europe.

Durbar Square views

by funky_pigeon about Cafe de Cosmopolitan

This restaurant gives street level views of Durbar Square - well first floor views, and for first thing in the morning its great for not having to climb mountains of stairs to just have your breakfast!!

The place is often fairly busy with a mixture of both locals and westerners and has a very nice feel to the place, and the ambience is relaxed and the staff are very friendly.

They have a large variety of food, from local food Dal Bhat to Western spagetti with meat sauce, but be aware that they use tomato ketchup instead of a tomato sauce for the dishes. We enjoy coming for breakfast and watching the local stalls set up in Basantapur Square for the days trading, its a great spot for people watching and the Museli with Fruit Curd and honey is good and priced at 55 rupees.

Delicious Steak Dinner

by IreneMcKay about The Everest Steak House

The service was pleasant and friendly. The full steak portions started from about NPR600, but they were huge so I opted for a half portion for NPR300. That was delicious and certainly big enough for me. Steaks come with a variety of different sauces. There are other menu options aside from steak, but I would imagine steak is what they do best.
