Not Impressed
Considering it is one of the biggest & busiest hotels in Thamel, it was a real disappointment. The staff were surly and generally unhelpful. Overall service and cleanliness was poor. Meals and drinks were over priced - definitely would advise people to eat elsewhere - also the local restaurants have terrific and delicious food. I have stayed in some pretty basic guesthouses outside Kathmandu and have had far superiour service for less money - KGH appears to have become complacent as it gets regular bulk bookings from various tour groups. It's time the tour companies took notice of customer's opinions and reviewed their choice of accommodation. Most people I spoke to at the hotel were unhappy with the service and value for money.
Yes, it is central and convenient but I am sure there are other places that are equally so and that offer a far more pleasant experience.

In the centre of Thamel
This guesthouse/hotel offers rooms ranging from basic to good. It is in the centre of Thamel . It has a restaurant and bar with many other services for all your needs.
Other addresses of places in Thamel are often given in relation to this hotel.
We were booked for 4 nights, but stayed for 3, as the hotel was overbooked on arrival. The night manager offered us an upgrade for the rest of our stay!
They have a left luggage facility which comes in very handy when you travel to other parts of Nepal and do not need to take everything with you.
The garden facing rooms are great.
Unique Quality: Location!
Can organise almost everything from here
You can leave your luggage here until you return from
visiting other parts of the country/trekking etc

Check before you arrive!
Wasn't sure whether to put this in the hotels section or the warnings/dangers section really.
Just wanted to let people know that in the 2 nights i stayed at the Kathmandu guest house recently, i must have seen 4 or 5 people turned away despite having booked a room beforehand. The staff there just overbooked apparently, not sure how often this happens, but i would suggest maybe double checking your bookings beforehand if possible with a phonecall or email.
The staff did do their best to find the people another room in other hotels nearby, but even so it is hassle you don't need.

Kathmandu Guest House - Simply wonderful
Clean, inexpensive, safe and friendly guesthouse in the heart of the Thamel District of Kathamadu. The front desk was extremely helpful in arranging tours, and they will gladly store your bags in their safe room if you plan to go treking. They also offer free pickup from the airport with a reservation. The rooms are not fancy but they make up for it in plenty of character (mine had it's own fireplace) and plenty of hot water. Definitley would stay here again.
Unique Quality: One of the best features of the hotel is their wonderful patio cafe that offers a peaceful respite from all the noise and bustle in the heart of tourist district. Good food and drinks are available and a great place just to watch or meet new people.

Every convenience!
stayed at the Kathmandu Guest House on my last night in Nepal and was pleasently surprised. It is extremely well set up with several gardens to relax in, restaurants, shops, internet cafe, massage and even movies shown every night.
The rooms are fairly comfortable, with a standard having 2 singles (quite hard) and the bathroom quite big. Hot water comes out instantly as well which is a very big novalty! All rooms have a view of somewhere on the property being it the restaurant or the gardens, you won't be dissapointed.
It is a very big place and they have room for hundreds of people to stay. Be aware that it is also the starting point for trips throughout Nepal with companies like Intrepid, although this won't affect your stay.
The big draw card for the Kathmandu Guest House is it's location. It's right in the heart of Themal and you won't have to go far to eat or shop. Perfect!!

Good point to network and chill
I thought after the exhausting experience in India I treat myself to a decent place whilst in Kathmandu.
The Kathmandu Guesthouse in the town's Thamel district (now almost empty of tourists) is a lovely location behind large iron gates and a massive door way, leading to the front pattio with the restaurant.
I met some fantastic people there and hope we can stay in touch as we discussed.
The three most remarkable ones I want to mention here
Robert Blakemore --- (documentary film maker) hope you finally got your indian visa sorted
Bastianne Krijgsmann --- (psycologist from holland) I MISS YOU - hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay
Angel Lopez-Soto (photographer from Madrid) wishing you many further extraordinary journeys, stock up on that garlic next time for altitude :) saludos

Great Traditonal Nepalese Guesthouse
Long time ago but I loved it. Different - the beds were a little short, but the hot tea and water at the door in the morning were great. Right in the middle of a small market area it was a great place to explore from. A lot of great spots close by including Eli's 10,000 ft high bar.

Wish i had stayed here!!!!!
Not really a tip....But i just wanted to say....... i wish i had stayed here!! Atmosphere was great! Saw one of the rooms and that was clean and tidy! Had already booked in somewhere else, but next time i shall definitely be staying here!!!
Excellent restaurant! Staff all seemed friendly. Very reasonably priced.
Situated really conveniently in the Thamel district, so has easy access to all shops, taxis and facilities needed. Gardens were very nice, and created a pleasant setting for some of the rooms just off them.... i think these were the deluxe A/C rooms.
I think room rates varied tremendously... very basic for just a few dollars a night, to the deluxe A/C garden rooms at about 50/60 dollars a night.

Continual booking troubles at Kathmandu G H
Despite several complaints and constructive remarks to KTM GH directly, their service level continues to slide downwards. More specifically, they will drop you if you fly in late or any other way arrive after mid day. They will dump you completely or assign you to a worse room and give your booked category room to a potentially better-paying client or some unlucky fellow traveller whose flight was cancelled. This is what you have to do with KTM Guest House: reserve in their upstairs booking room, email a parallel booking, print their reply, call and remind, call gain before arrival, and when you arrive, bring that confirmation print and bang the table if they put up a sweet face if they say you came in late and they gave the room to somebody else. Don't accept this crap and move to another hotel next time. Kathmandu Guest House isn't what it used to be.

An all-time classic
With such a big variery of rooms and rates, there is no way that you won't find something that suits your taste or budget. Liana and I stayed in one of the rooms that face the restaurant area on the second floor and the sight of the big tree foliage right outside our windows was really nice in the morning.
The new wing accomodates the more luxurious and expensive rooms, but, who needs them?
The food at the restaurant was really nice and the garden at the back was relaxing too.
The atmosphere the KTMGH emanates is very cosy and you will not regret your stay.
Unique Quality: Nice garden, excellent restaurant with really nice breakfast buffet, friendly staff. Centrally located in the heart of Thamel.

Mumbai to Kathmandu
Hi! Can anyone advise if there are frequent flights from mumbai to kathmandu. I have checked online and found a website (travel agent) charging USD 450 for a 2 way flight from mumbai. Any cheaper alternative?
Where can I stay in kathmandu (budget USD30) and if it is safe a a single asian girl to tour the area alone?
RE: Mumbai to Kathmandu
Hello!
Between Mumbai and Kathmandu you have a number of airlines to choose among, somw of which go via Delhi. I have heard much good about Cosmic Air's Mumbai flight, and they should probably be cheaper than what you quote. However, I do not think you can buy their tickets on the net, rather have a travel agent book tickets for you on such relatively obscure airlines. A definite non-reliable is Royal Nepal Airlines that do fly the Mumbai-KTM segment, but not frequently. Sahara and Jet also flies this route via Delhi, so does Indian Airlines. For price comparison, Kathmandu-Delhi is about 130 USD one way, so the price quoted return isn't too bad.
You will find many guest houses in kathmandu charging less than USD 30, including Kathmandu Guest House which is somewhat of a reference point, but try Lhasa Guest House in Jyatha street for something cheaper and still nice and homely. If you look around and bargain hard, you will also be able to get a 4-star, or even 5-star accommodation for the 30 USD, if you opt for last-minute accommodation.
Travelling in Nepal can be as safe or as dangerous as you make it; place and circumstance decides, plus the unwanted attention you may draw. That unwanted attention can be regulated by dress and attitude. By adhering to local dress codes more or less, some key customs and local schedules, you'll be fine. If you will have an Indian experience first (judging from your Mumbai itinerary), you will quickly find that Nepal is a calmer, more tolerant, less criminal and relaxed place. But never go trekking alone, and do not venture out alone too late into the evening, particularily in the key tourist areas. And use taxis to get home from restaurants or whatever far from your hotel at night. At the Kathmandu Guest house and a few other places there are message boards where you can find a trekking mate or join others to Chitwan, rafting, a Pokhara trip or whatever. You'll be fine! Enjoy!
