A few important notes on Nepal
by song99
What's the weather like in June? And how many ways are there to enter Tibet (from Kathmandu) by land? How long does it take, and how much does it cost (transport + permit)? I am Canadian. Thanks.

Trying to predict the weather can be difficult because of local on the day variations.
This information should be used as a guide only.
Here is the average weather for Kathmandu for this time of year.
Enjoy your holiday.
June.
High 81f / 27c
Low 69f / 21c

OK – I take it that you are aware that June is slap bang in the middle of monsoon season, It doesn’t rain all the time but the the weather is predominantly wet with rain every day, then breaks where the rain stops and the sun breaks through and it gets Very Hot.
However, If you head to somewhere like the Upper kali Gandaki Valley then the monsoon rains are a lot less as this area is in what is called The Himalayan Rain Shadow.
One way into Tibet and it takes 8 days – overland Kathmandu Lhasa and flight back to Kathmandu – all the details of the trip are on my Nepal pages – it saves me re-typing everything ;-) Current prices from Nirmal at HMA are as follows
If single person Aprox US$.2000.00 per person with return flight to Kathmandu
If two persons Aprox US$.1500.00 per person with return flight Kathmandu
Both prices include transportation by Toyota Landcruiser or similar, accommodation with breakfast for 7 nights – 8 days
Guide
Entrance fee into all sites including Potola Palace monasteries and summer palaces
Flights
Visas and permits
Hope that helps but if you need further info then feel free to drop me a lins
Happy Travels

There is only one access point to Tibet by vehichle so far: the Kodari border crossing. You can also cross the border at Hilsa and have a vehicle waiting for you on the Tibetan side of the border. See my Simikot page for info. There are also other crossing places where you can access Tibet by prearranged tours. You can enter Tibet in one day from Kathmandu; actually, you can make a stunt into Tibet and see the plateau and Everest Basecamp (north side) in 3-4 days, and it won't be too expensive. However, that is pushing it (healthwisde, too), so better look into a deal like what Into-thin-air is mentioning.

Travel Tips for Kathmandu
Walking in the streets, waiting charts
by sachara
Walking in the streets of Kathmandu, I saw a lot of shops, streetvendors, rickshaws, but also these men waiting with their charts for a job.
And also at this picture you see how daily life or the daily struggle for life is mixed with the religious life in Nepal. Temples, shrines, stupas or prayer wheels at nearly every corner.
Traditional Nepali Hat
by SLLiew
It looks similar to the Nehru hat. Nepali men often wear this cotton and colorful hat.
It looks a bit like the Malay songkok that is worn to the mosque and formal occasion.
Perhaps they have similar origin. Just a guest.
Clothing
by PierreZA about Several
Kathmandu is a great place to shop for clothes. A large variety of clothes can be bought. The alleys around Indra Chowk, between Thamel and Durbar square, have dozens of fabric shops and tailors.
When buying clothes, anything from T-shirts to trousers, do fit them before buying. I found that the sizes are not what we are use to and does not say much about the real size of the piece of clothing. If you buy a shirt marked L, another L shirt in the same shop might not fit. Haggle
Thamel - Patan and back
by josephescu
From nearby the British embassy in Kathmandu north east of Thamel, the taxi to Patan was 120 rupees, 30 minutes.
For the way back to Kathmandu, I did not find any cabs as it was night and long after tourists ought to have left already. So I started walking towards Kathmandu, and within 200m, I caught a shared cab, “20 rupees for foreigners”.
Great for meat lovers!
by halfbeat about Everest steak house.
Great place for a post trek or adventure steak!
Prices are pretty good, the steaks were about 300 - 400r each on average, with some of the specials being a bit more. Meat quality was excellent! Chips were good! Large portions!
They do have other dishes aswell, plus some vegetarian food, but it is mainly catering for us meat lovers out there! Just the steak in general. Excellent quality and cooked just as you ask for it!
Questions and Answers
Q: How much $$$ is a safe amount to budget for in Kathmandu? "Probably a stupid question (how long is a piece of string) but want to know a ball park figure to budget for if I'm doing the..."
A: "Perhaps it might be a good idea if you inform us how long you intend to stay in Nepal then we can give you an idea of the necessary funding!!!!!!!!!!!"
