Buying a good down sleeping bag in Kathmandu

by rock_on_ku

Hi - Is good quality down sleeping bags available for purchase in Kathmandu? If yes, what kind of price should I be looking at? Any recommendations of shops? I would rather buy it there and not haul it all the way from the US

Hi there,

You will pay a PREMIUM price in kathmandu for a good quality down sleeping bag, plus, if you do the research (google) a high end sleeping bag will be cheaper in US and should weigh less then 300gm and have a compression bag so will not take up that much space. I bought mine about 5 years ago, cost USD 210, weighs in at 285gm and is rated to -20degC and fits in one hand when compressed

Personally I think that you will be able to find a Very Good Down sleeping-bag in Nepal for a fraction of the price that you would pay in the “West”
OK – You will have to make 100% sure that the bag you choose is up to scratch, that the down is of a good quality, the stitching is good and the outer material is strong and durable, Also that the bag compresses to your liking and isn’t too heavy.
You can expect to pay anything from around $80 upwards but you should be able to find one that suits your bill for around $100. Try the boys at Panorama Trekking and Trade in North Thamel – Directions and contact details are on my Nepal shopping tips.

Also – don’t forget that if you aren’t going to get a lot of future use out of your new Down sleeping-bag that you can always hire one – prices are around $1 per day !!

I hope that helps a little but If you need more info then feel free to drop me another line
Good Luck and Happy Travels

Thank you both for the replies. My concern is the knock-off Down gears are not going to be good since downs can be allergenic if not treated well. And I sure don't want the down coming out of the bags and into my mouth while sleeping :) Looks like I should just buy a good one here.

I hired a -20 degrees celsius bag for $1 a day and it was fantastic. I think also that you would be better off purchasing your bag in thamel rather than the US.

Re: Buying a good down sleeping bag in Kathmandu

I bought a down sleeping bag from Shaunas (or Shona's?) Alpine Shop in Thamel. The owner is an expat Brit who knows his stuff and wont rip you off. His prices are reasonable and set. Mine was extra long as Im 6'2" and rated to -15C and cost about £60 which is about $100. Sorry, cant remember the rupee price. Ive used it every day for 4 months but not at extream temperatures yet, but it is very well made (in Nepal). Dont expect it to be ultra light though. If weight and size is critical, then its going to cost and you might as well get it at home I think. Other shops have imported high-end original gear but at prices as high or higher than Europe.
Hope this helps a bit too.
Cheers.

Travel Tips for Kathmandu

Decorated building like the Akash Bhairav

by sachara

The Akash Bhairab Temple at the Indra Chowk is covered with brightly colourful ceramic tiles in purplish red, white and green and The building has yellow windows and at the balconies you can see four metal griffins. At the entrance of the temple are two metal lions.
Through the open windows you can see a silver image of Bhairav. They told us that this image will be brought out during important festivals.

Offering Puja( Prayer) to God.

by goutammitra

Nepal predominantly a Hindu country. Here you will find people are god fearing and most of the people are very honest. They offer regular prayer to the God they worship. It is customery to offer prayer to the God in the morning and in the evening. The life of the people of Kathmandu hovers araound Durbar Square. With its numerous temples in the vicinity people offer prayer whenever they get time.

We also took this opportunity to offer prayer whenever we had the opportunity.

You can buy everthing

by KasiaWin about I don't remember

There are many, many shops.... I bought so much things: Gifts, clothes, trek equipment, sweet, alcohol, chess - everything you can buy in Kathmandu.
I bought woolen jacket with polar inside, first jacket with bright colour and second - soft colour and for my husband with soft colour.
Starting price - 1500 Rs / 19 USD/ and my final price 900 Rs / 11 USD/.
Everything is rather inexpencive.

Taxi

by PierreZA

Taxis are easy to find. You will have to negotiate! The first fare offered by the driver is usually extremely overpriced. The fare to and from the airport should be 300 to 400 Rs one way. We had drivers wanted up to Rs1000!
It might also be useful to enquire from your hotel as to how much a specific trip should cost. There are usually many taxis around, so just go to the next driver for a better fare.

Value For money

by goutammitra about Tajmahal Restaurant:(nee Shree Lal Veg- Rest)

Addendum( 2010 May): This hotel is one perfect example of bad state of affair in Nepal and lost tourism. As I learnt from Mr.Das that he had to change the name and style of the restaurant because of Maoist threats. He started the place as Vegetarian but had been subject to continuous closure and extortion. He changed the concept to now Non-Vegetarian Indian restaurant, with less no of staff and customer as in the last two years the no of tourists has reduced in Kathmandu because of political unrest. The food still remains very good if it is cooked by Mr.Das himself. I had one night meal there.

(2007 Sept) It was Saturday, when we landed in Kathmandu. We take only Vegetarian food on Saturday. I was looking for a decent place and asked the T Shirt maker( see shopping tip) for a place, who in turn guided me to Shree Lal. To our surprise we found that the owner Mr.Ritwik Das is a Bengali gentleman from Kolkata, married to a Nepali lady Mrs. Shanti Maharjan, has opened this beautiful place after a lot of struggle in life. Mr. Das told me the story of coming to Kathmandu and getting married to Mrs.Shanti. She is a graceful lady and an extremely able partner to Mr.Das. The restaurant is brand new, food is cooked in front of you, clean and all the crew welcome with a smile. You just cant go back unsatisfied. The food is very good and healthy. They also have a Bar for the customers. We had the opportunity to meet Mrs.Shanti and their son Wrishant. The Restaurant is also assisted by Mr.Ritwik's brother Satwik. Opon meeting Mr.Das we immediately became friendly and not only this, on learning that we are paying very high amount for our stay, he offered to help us to get a very good hotel at very resonable price( Hotel Dharma Inn at Pokhara) at Pokhara. He wrote a letter to his friend Mr.Chabbi, who gave us almost 50% discount. Mr. Das is an excellent man so is his wife Shanti. During our stay in Kathmandu, we tasted their Vegetarian food on several occasions and all the time the meal was excellent. We had mostly Indian food of Dal, Roti, Naan, Vegetables, cottage cheese etc.

They also serve Vegetarian dishes made in European, Italian and English style. Please give it a try while in Kathmandu, you will not be disappointed.

They make pure vegetarian food and dont use even Eggs!!
