Getting from Tribhuvan Airport to hotel in Thamel

by ohaiyo

Hi,

Is there a prepaid taxi service outside the international terminal to hotels in Thamel? I've already booked my hotel.

I want to avoid the hassle of fighting off taxi drivers trying to get you to go to their hotels for a commission.

If there is such a service? How does it work? Where is it? How much would it costs?

Some hotels can organize a pick-up at the airport for you (for a fee, obviously). Try contacting your hotel and make an enquiry. Most international airports have pre-paid taxi services.

yes there is pre paid taxi service at the international terminal that can take you thamel. I got the prepaid taxi to thamel and the driver still took me to a hotel, although i didn't have anything booked yet so you will be fine.

Hope this helps.

Good info already posted above – Yes there is a pre-paid taxi service available but I can’t say that I have used it myself – Either do as above suggests and ask your hotel to pick you up, Some actually offer a free airport pick-up service, The Potala Guesthouse for instance

Or if your hotel doesn’t offer this service then a $5 usually covers the ride into Thamel

Check out my Nepal Transportation tips for details on how to get through Kathmandu Tribuvan Airport with the least amount of hassle

I Hope that helps a little but if you require any more info then please feel free to drop me a line

Yes you will find a desk with someone who will issue you with a ticket for a taxi. I paid 300Rs i think to go to the Yak & Yeti. I could haggle 200Rs but like you say sometimes it aint worth it.

Hi

The going rate three days ago from Kathmandu Guest House (centre of Thamel) to airport was 400 Rupees in a normal taxi or 500 rupees in a private car. Should be able to get this easily without hassle of bargaining. Around US$6.

Travel Tips for Kathmandu

Kathmandu Valley

by herzog63

When I arrived in Kathmandu from Pokhara I was amazed by the flatness!! I guess I though that Kathmandu was going to be on some mountain peak! There are mountains but they are quite some distance from the city center! So as it is so flat Kathmandu is a great place to rent a bicycle and cruise around the local neighborhoods and even further afield to the suburbs!!

Deepavali - Festival of Lights

by SLLiew

Great time to be in Katmandu during this festival. Decorations are put up on buildings, streets and in front of Hindu homes, colorful powder on the road in front of the door beautiful designs like lotus and oil lamps lighted. It is like a new year and locals wear their best and go to the temples to pray.

However it can be difficult time to get bus or air tickets. Was not able to get bus tickets to Pokhara although there were extra bus services. So just stay put and enjoy the celebration.

Date of Deepavali is at the end of the year but changes on the Gregorian year and so check the calendar.

Thamel

by yumiyun

Thamel area is full of gift shops (besides hotels and restaurants). Most of them carry pretty much similar things. Jewelry shops with silver and semi-precious stone ornaments (particularly turquoise). Clothing shop with printed pants, embroidary shirt etc. Also rice paper products such as lanterns and calenders seem to be popular. You can find both Nepali and Tibetan crafts here since there are many Tibetans around. King of barganing pays less.

Rickshaws

by nattybabe

Rickshaws are a fun way to get around and easier as they can negotiate through the busy streets easier than taxis can. As with taxis though you will need to agree on a price before you get in NOT after. Once again, if you don't agree just walk away and they will either go down more in price or you can find another driver who will accept your price. They are charging you 100% more than locals anyway so they're not hard done by.

Why not try Nepali food and learn the language

by traceyspacey about Thakali Kitchen

I feel strongly that you should always try the local food. At Thakali Kitchen a mix of locals and tourists can be found here. The food is great and cheap. The staff will teach you how to say that you want more or that you are full. Certainly made to feel welcome. Vegetable daal bhaat 85 rupees.
