Walking in the streets, streetvendors
by sachara
Walking in the streets of Kathmandu you see a lot of streetstalls, tiny hole-in-the-wall shops or vendors just sitting on a square meter on the street. Most of the goods for sale are recognisable like vegetables, woollen shawls and blankets, but sometimes I was very intrigued, because I didn't recognise the stuff. So I don't know what this man was selling. He permitted me to take a picture, but he couldn't explain what he was selling.
First I thought maybe colouring for applying tika at the forehead, but I'm not sure.
Dont leave home without a pocket torch
by askhokhar
Nepal is facing a severe power shortage, and as a result, power is not available for about 20 hours every day.
It depends on your luck whether your hotel has some back up power supply arrangement. It would be better if you carry a pocket torch AT ALL TIMES.. you never know if you will need to go to the washroom at night.
The shopkeepers often do not have any arrangement for backup power supply. However, it is often difficult to see their merchandise clearly even during daytime. So a pocket torch would be something you wont regret having carried with you.
Kathmandu's Shopping District.
by goutammitra about New Road Area!!
Though the city of Kathmandu has shopping malls everywhere but the oldest and the best shopping area remains in New Road. It is very popular with Nepali and Indian people. You get right from expensive cameras, watches, clothes, jewellery to tailors to stitch your suit in 24-48 hrs! Just try or have stroll in the evening when you have nothing to do.
Vegan Mecca of Kathmandu
by zuari_baba about Shree Lal Veg Restaurant
Name of Restaurant: Shree Lal Veg Restaurant
This is a clean and unpretentious vegetarian and vegan place run by
a young couple, Mr and Mrs Ritwik Das. Mr. Das is aware of the term 'vegan' and will be happy to point
out your options. The cuisine is indian/nepali. The rates are very very reasonable,
even for the tourist dominated Thamel.
The place is at Thamel Chowk (West of Royal Palace and SAARC) and very close
to Hotel Tashi Delek. I had rotis/chappatis with a mixed vegetable curry. The curry was exceptionally
tasty and the rotis just perfect.
Fancy Bhutanese?
by traceyspacey about Dechenling Beer House
Set in a pleasant garden with water features just off the main road. What I liked about here was that I had a chance to try Bhutanese food. They also serve Tibetan food as well. I had a really tasty curry. Someone else tried Kewa Dhatsi (potatoes and cheese curry), who said it was great. Bhutanese-when else will I get to try it.
