things to do in Pokhara....

by Hurley1852

hey..

i'll be arriving in kathmandu on Sunday 15th Mar with my wife. we wish to take a bus ride to pokhara. however we have no idea of what to expect and things to look forward to. we are thinking of experiencing the river rafting as well as the ultralight. perhaps someone could recommend us a nice affordable accommodation too. it is suppose to be our honeymoon and we want it to be memorable.

thanks...

Accomodation: The new winds hotel on Lakeside-6; Manager: James Hethrington; email: thenewwinds@yahoo.com; website: http://thenewwinds.com/

The hotel is spotlessly clean and well run, costs about 10 to 15 Euro per night and room, you can have meals there as well and it is close to the main street where you can book tours, buy books, wash clothes, eat meals etc. Ask them for a corner room to the garden.
I stayed there last year and if you go and meet James and his wife Monika, please say hello from Daniela from Italy.

Tours: Himalayan Encounters, Lakeside-6, is more or less diagonally across the road from the hotel
email: raftnepal@himenco.wlink.com.np

And if you have a few moments go across the street and meet the great kids of Shamrock school (see my VT pages for Shamrock) and say hello again from my side and that I think of them even if I am bad at answering their mails.

Be aware of one thing: Due to Nepal's extreme poorness, they currently have 12 hours a day load shedding and that means, no light, no internet access, no electricity and if the there is no sun, no hot water (sun panels). Take flash lights with you, you will need them.

P.S. Vaccinations:
I only did typhoid fever, but my friends also got Hepatitis A and B and Tetanus. Best if you ask your local health service, they have updated info on what is recommended.

My Own recommendation for somewhere Nice to stay is “Hotel Lake Diamond” – full details are on my accommodation tips
Sunrise – Get up Early and take a taxi to Sarangkot – If you want. Walk back, it is a nice little trek and all down hill, you will be back in Lakeside in time for lunch
Other things to see / do
Visit The Tibetan Refugee camp
Visit Devi Falls
Trek up to The Peace Pagoda – then back down to the lake and cross by boat – a good ½ days outing
Tandem Paraglide Flight
Micro-Light Flight

Most of the above and more ideas are written up on my Things to Do tips section
I hope that helps a little but If you need more info then feel free to drop me a line
Happy Travels
Rob

I recomend Barahi hotel, clean and nice, quiet hotel. Only two mnt walking distance from Phewa lake and shopping area.

Ultralight, river rafting, canoeing at Phewa lake and go to Samarkhot at 5 AM (20 mint by bus from hotel) to see sunrise at Machapuchere/Fish tail , Anapurna.

Travel Tips for Pokhara

Paragliding

by illumina

Pokhara and particularly Sarangkot are hugely popular destinations for paragliding, and indeed while we were there (Feb 2009) they were having an international paragliding competition! Great fun to watch them come down from the mountains, circle the lake and then land in the fields between the hotel and the lake. There was a big stage set up, and music playing - a mini festival!

Sadly due to illness I didn't have a go at it myself - next time! There are plenty of places in Lakeside offering tandem paraglides - a good way to see the sunrise at Sarangkot I'm sure!

Great pastries!

by illumina about German Bakery

This little bakery is a good place to stop for breakfast, particularly if you're heading off to climb up to the World Peace Pagoda. They do really nice pastries, although later in the day they might be a bit stale. There are three branches in Lakeside, so it shouldn't be hard to find one, and there's another branch on Damside too. We stopped at the one in front of the Boomerang restaurant, just north of the Royal Palace (I seem to remember it being near a tree shrine).

Rice Terraces

by herzog63

The work that has gone into making the terraces is amazing! The area is steep mountains so for these people to be able to grow crops they are build and maintain the terreaces. It can be a dangerous area during the rainy season as soom of these seem to collapse every year!

Pokhara City

by PierreZA

The tourist area of Pokhara is mostly around the Lakeside and Damside areas. It is worth exploring Pokhara City, where you will get a different idea of the city. There are many shops, restaurants etc. Here you will find areas like Mahendra Pul, which is the main shopping area for the locals.
You also get different views of the beautiful mountains, which creates the amazing backdrop of this city.

Pokhara on the Phewalake.

by Alphons

Here is Pokhara on the Phewalake. Its a big city. Situated at an altitude of 827m from the sea level. The second large city of Nepal after Kathmandu. 200 km west of Kathmandu, 6a 7 hours over the road by bus.
