Hotel DewaneKhas Skardu: Hotel DewaneKhas Skardu, Best Restaurant

This recommended hotel by "lonely Planet" has a great restaurant featuring a small selection of Local dishes in addition to the extensive Pakistani, Chinese and Continental offerings. Try the excellent local soup of barley, black bean and lentil in mutton broth, and the whole fried trout if it's available. There are also barbecue and several vegetarian dishes.

First Family Restaurant in Skardu City. Only hotel and restaurant that is open all season in Skardu. Comfortable and immacultely clean, carpeted insulated rooms, Satellite TV, Wireless Broadband internet service, 24 hours hot water with western bathrooms and some featuring bathtub and shower facilities. Great view of Kharpocho Fort.

Upper Kachura Lake Camp Site (Ghazi Hotel): Tranquility in the Wilderness

There is a camping site in the close vicinity of the Upper Kachura Lake, which is actually a part of Ghazi Hotel, a small time hotel with very basic cooking, accommodation, and bathing facilities.

We did not stay at the camp site as we had already booked our accommodation besides Lower Kachura Lake but found the place worth it and wish to stay there in our next trip. However, we enjoyed fresh BBQed trout fish over there with juicy apricots.

Ideally nestled in fruit laden trees and with heavenly views, the campsite is a paradise for nature lovers, umpteen miles away from the commercial world, and a perfect place to make a base not only for hiking and walking to nearby mountains but for exploring the Upper Kachura Lake, which requires more than one day to discover the treasures it offers, fully.

(Feel free to contact me at muzamil79@gmail.com if you require further information about the place)

Mashabrum Hotel: Skardu's 5 Star

Being the base to start adventure and other recreational travelling, Skardu attracts tourists from all over the world. Although, staying in Skardu does not make sense to many people and they want to depart to their destinations as soon as possible after reaching Skardu but at times it becomes inevitable because of the central and commercial nature of the city. For such inevitable and short stays, Hotel Mashabrum provides a quality service within the city center. In fact, the hotel does not belong to the 5* category but when comparing to other facilities in Skardu, it is the most modern choice among all.

Reminiscent of one of the highest peaks of Karakoram Range and of the World, Mashabrum, the hotel is located at the entrance of the city with all basic amenities including pick and drop service from the airport, if you are arriving by plane. You will most probably find a representative of the hotel at the airport lounge of Skardu Airport even if you have not informed them in advance. You may call up the hotel representative to pick you up from the bus stand, or form any other place, should you arrive by bus.

Although I planned to stay at this hotel initially but could not materialize it. However, this place is worth mentioning here beacuse of the paucity of accomodation options in this area.

This hotel rightly claims to be the largest hotel in the area with all the modern facilities that can be expected in this far flung area. The hotel is well suited for people, for instance families, who are there for recreational purposes rather than for people who are there for adventure trips.

This facility is of rather commercial nature and situated in the main commercial city, therefore, one should not expect extraordinary views from the hotel.

PTDC K2 Motel, Skardu: One of my favorite places to stay!

This is a GREAT place to stay!

Really friendly staff, great dinner, scenic location overlooking the Indus River... although a little at the end of the Skardu town's main thoroughfare...

I had enquired at the desk if they had shampoo and they said no, but 10 mins later, one of the staff came knocking at my door, perspiring but all smiling, with shampoo. He had ran down to the shop in town just to get me some! Wow!

Dinner was great! I don't remember what I had but it was one of the best meals i've had in the country!

Bath water was FREEZING though, they only have hot water for a certain time of the day.

This place is a very popular choice for expeditioners from all over the world, to K2 and the other ranges... as evidenced by the photos along the hallways... they usually meet up and organise their treks here as well as to meet other trekkers/expeditioners.

There is a PTDC office on site.

K2 Motel: The place for most trekkers and mountaineers

K2 Motel is on one of the river banks in Skardu town. It is a well run and clean motel and is part of the PTDC chain of Motels run by the Department of Tousim.

K2 Motel is the choice of accommodation for almost all trekking groups (only Adventure Travel clients stay at Karakoram Towers and very few want the glitz of the Shangrila Resort). This is fairly eveident as you wander the halls and see all the notice boards for each year of trekking with stickers, autographs, ephemera and photos of amazing expeditions and treks in the Baltistan area.

I passed through K2 Motel once I had finished my trek and returned to Skardu - our trekking leader had booked a room which we used that afternoon to have our first shower since setting off from Skardu about 15 days earlier...bliss! I can't say how much the K2 Motel is since I didn't actually stay there but check out their website (below)

There are lovely lawns with views out across the sweeping river plains of Skardu - it is down near the river though (so the views don't rival the campground!)

There is also a nice restaurant serving hearty meals - we stopped for lunch upon returning to Skardu before heading up to the campground at Kachura.

In the carpark there are always plenty of Jepp drivers ready to pick up some business, there is also a small gift shop but its goods look a bit tired and uninspiring.

This photo is of our core trekking group of 5 trekkers as well as our guides (2) cooks(2) and assistants (2) - the porters left us in Hushe - we had a total of 25 support all up (porters, cooks, guides and assistants)

Shangrila Resort: If camping's not your thing......

Shangrila Resort is the top accommodation in Skardu. We didn't stay there so I can't really comment on the standard of the rooms etc, but this photo gives a bit of an overview of the resort - individual cabins fanning out around the artificial Kachura Lake.

Guests would boat on the lake and the large building in this photo is the floating Chinese Restaurant.

This photo was taken from the Adventure Travel Campground where I stayed (and would highly recommend - see separate accommodation tip), but Shangrila might be more your thing if you are looking for a luxury trip...

The resort has a honeymoon suite in the fuselage of an old Dakota DC3 aeroplane!
