Manila Shangrila Hotel: Luxury Hotel of Makati Part (new pics)
This is Again A Review of Mankati Shangrila Hotel Manila albeit with newer pictures on a revisit in 2012. They now have LCD tv's in the rooms.
The Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a World Renowned International hotel chain based in Hong Kong. It is the largest Asian-based deluxe hotel group in the region. The group started in 1971 with its first and flagship hotel in Singapore, and now has 49 deluxe hotels and resorts located in key Asian, Australian and Middle East cities with hotel room inventory of over 23,000. The hotel group also has a sister brand called Traders Hotel, established in 1989 to cater mostly to business travellers. In the philippines it has 3 Shangrila Hotels and 1 traders hotel. I stayed in two of the shangrila hotels called Shangrila Hotel Manila which is located in Ayala Avenue corner Makati Avenue.
Unique Quality: Shangrila Manila has one of the best locations for a hotel in Manila and it has spacious and elegant rooms with tasteful decor and a superb bathroom with an extension phone and glass showers. But it gets terribly busy and you don't get your first choice of room type. they provide a great breakfast with a huge choice for the buffet and also still have wonderful service. Plus is is the most prestigous hotel address in the Philippines and is walking distance to the Upscale shopping Meccas of Glorietta and Greenbelt.

Manila Shangrila Hotel: Luxury Hotel of Makati!
The Makati Shangrila Hotel is easily my favorite hotel chain in the Metro Manila Area.

Hotel Intercontinental Manila: Great location. Great deal.
The Intercon has been in Makati God knows when but still offers one of the better deals in town. I believe the rooms have been renovated when we stayed here last (November 2007). Conveniently located near Glorietta and major public transit stations, like the MRT.
The lobbby may not be as grand as the other two bigger hotels here, but the Intercon is a bargain and still met our expectations.
Unique Quality: Location.

The Peninsula Manila: Simply the best hotel in Manila...
We stayed at the Peninsula Manila last January and let me just emphasize that everything in this hotel shouts out pure luxury…
My girlfriend and I booked a “superior” room at the Ayala wing (or Ayala tower) noticing how much more expensive the rooms are at the newly renovated Makati wing/tower. So with low expectations as to how the room would “feel”, we approached the desk. We were pleased at how friendly and accomodating the check-in staff were, not skipping any details and providing straight, no-nonsense answers to all of our questions. We were shown our room and I must say that considering the location, level of service and security the hotel offered that we really felt more bang for our buck.
The bathroom was superb with a bath-tub, a grand sink and mirror, plus separate “cubicles” for the shower and toilet. The bathrobes and towels were soft and smelled good. They provided all of the necessary toiletries. Shampoo, shower-gel, bath-gel, conditioner, body lotion, sewing-kit, shower-cap, etc. Though I never used any of them, I took a wiff at the shampoo and bath-gel, concluded how good they smelled so brought one of each with me as souveniers. They replenished the stock the next day. And yes, I brought a bath-slipper with me, too.
The bed was VERY comfortable and the pillows they provided were the best I’ve ever slept on. It's strange how big a difference the choice of pillows will make to the quality of sleep you’ll have.
One thing I’ve been dreading ever since I found out during the booking process that our room was to face Ayala avenue (the Philippine answer to Wall-street) was the noise from outside. Now we know that the Pen is a 5 star hotel, but still, we were still please how this was never an issue in the 5 nights we stayed there, considering the amount of noise and traffic I could hear outside (Philippine drivers are notorious for their “beyond-excessive” use of carhorns).
The room had great airconditioning which can be regulated by a control unit, that strangely enough reminded me of a hospital switchboard. The TVs in the Ayala wing were not LCD flatscreens like those found in the newly renovated rooms. But how important is this small detail when you’re on vacation, really? We had a big CRT television which was good enough. What bothered us was the huge motel-style cabinet that housed the TV and minibar that was just too big and was taking up so much space.
The daily fruit basket was a nice touch, though the daily newspaper under the door is something that management/staff could skip when the guest is clearly there for leisure.
The lobby is just a jaw-dropping sight. Just hanging out in the lobby makes one feel the grandeur of of it all, having coffee and desserts among some of Manila’s most important personalities. And if you're patient enough, you might even catch a glimpse of the "Lady with a thousand pairs of shoes". Yup, the former Philippine dictator's widow, Imelda Marcos is a frequent resident/visitor of the Pen.
For a special dinner, my girl and I went to “Old Manila”, the signature restaurant of the Peninsula Manila. This is one of those stiff places that makes it’s money by maintaining it’s stiffness. Not a laidback place, but then again, it's not supposed to be. A classy restaurant indeed, we were seated by a waiter who was to be our own for the duration of the meal and no-one else’s… talk about 5-star service!!! The food was worth bragging about, but expect to pay around 3-4 thousand pesos per person for a 3 course meal and dessert. Definitely not the place you’d bring your burp-out-loud beer-buddies to.
Breakfast at Nielsens buffet was superb, with an omelette/pancake station and a wide selection of drinks and food that other countries consider breakfast (sushi in the morning?). One thing they could improve on is their variety of bread. My girl was a bit disappointed when none of the bread they had on the buffet was “rough” enough for her euro-stomach. But she did get to taste, according to her, at Nielsen's the best muesli + yoghurt cereal she’d ever had, so the bread issue went away.
Having said all that, the main attraction of the Peninsula Manila has got to be the staff and their dedication to impeccable service. Everybody greets and smiles, but unlike most other 5-star hotels, the Peninsula people do it in a non-irritating manner. They are eager to please and help out while at the same time they somewhat unintentionally give the impression that they geniunely enjoy doing it. The service does not feel fake. The security personell are thorough, but not overwhelming or intrusive. They check everything before you enter, even when they know you live there, which is a good thing. The checking of bags and purses for "items for the unthinkable" before entering a public place is the norm in Manila, so better willingly open up that bag. The surrounding areas around the Pen are some of the, if not THE safest place in the capital. That's what you get when you put four 5-star hotels, a chain of high end malls and the main financial district of the country all in one place... security gets beefed up.
Will definitely stay again.

Makati Shangrila Hotel: Most luxurious hotel in Makati
Before I wrote this tip, I was puzzled why this hotel was not yet listed among the Makati hotel tips. Turns out it was listed under Manila, which is not really accurate. Anyway, since I reside in Makati, it would have been unusual for me to check in a hotel that's in my neighborhood. But since I got to stay for a night for FREE, hey who am I to complain?
The hotel is the most luxurious I've ever slept in. The rooms are designed primarily for the business traveler, not surprising as the hotel's in the heart of the country's financial capital. It provides a work desk with some office supplies, your own fax machine and internet cables. The closet has flashlight, umbrella, electric iron and ironing board, safe deposit box. The bathroom has a separate shower cubicle from the bathtub, bathrobes and lots of towels. My only complaint was the room's electric water kettle was busted as it couldn't boil water for my coffee.
As for their food, oh gee...I haven't come across a dish I didn't like.
Staff was great...in performance, attitude as well as looks.
The place is not cheap, but if you really want to know and experience a superb place with superb service, then this hotel in this part of the city is definitely well-recommended.
Unique Quality: As mentioned, the hotel is right at the financial/commercial center of the country, which is also where many foreign embassies are located. On top of that, it lies next to fine shops, restos, bistros, etc.

Makati Prime Tower: Affordable Hotel in the City
It's always a nice experience staying at Makati Prime Tower. It's conveniently located in the heart of Makati City, where the action is. It's just a few minutes away by cab from the city's shopping malls, cinema houses, restaurants and even hospitals. I first discovered about this place when a close friend recommended this place for a shower party. This is where we organized the memorable event around three years ago, and, the place was just perfect. There even even a suite, where the kitchen is quite nice and you can cook and prepare your food. Great for parties too!
Unique Quality: It's got everything that you need at an affordable price.

A good walk-in place...: The Prince Plaza II Hotel
I don't know if I should put this on my off the beaten path list or hotel accomodations, but since it's a hotel, I'd rather place it here. Sometimes, when one gets too tired to go home and the traffic is horrific, it is best just to stay overnight...since you didn't plan it, you would choose a place that's clean, but is very, very affordable. It's a good thing to find this place.
