Manila is my Birthplace but I am raised in Alaminos City, Pangasinan. I stayed in Manila for 9 years starting from 1998 to 2007. I have relatives in Sampaloc so I visit frequently.
Manila is the Capital of the Philippines where Malacanang Palace the seat of Power can be found. It is one of the 16 cities that make up the Metro Manila and one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world.
It is divided into 16 geographical districts namely Santa Cruz, Ermita, Pandacan, Sampaloc, Malate, Binondo, Paco, Quiapo, San Andres, San Miguel, Port Area Intramuros, Tondo, San Nicolas, Santa Ana, and Santa Mesa.
Manila is congested because of the influx of people coming from the provinces seeking for employment opportunity. Another factor are the students so don't be surprised if you see lots of people walking in uniforms. Manila is the place where you can find numerous tertiary institution like the University of Sto. Thomas, Far Eastern University, UP-Manila, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Manila, Philippine Normal University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines etc.
It is in Malate where you can find apartment hotels, hotels, inns and pension houses. Famous hotels are the The Hyatt Hotel & Casino Manila, Manila Hotel, Pan-Pacific Hotel, Diamond Hotel, The Century Park Hotel Manila, etc.
Specialty restaurants and cafes can be foundalso in Malate particularly along corner of Adriatico and Remedios streets. You can have a taste of All kinds of Nightlife like Live bands, acoustics, dicso, comedy bars or something more quiet where you can just have a conversation with your friends.
Filipinoes love to shop that is why malls are everywhere. There is Robinson's place in Malate, SM city Manila just right beside Manila City hall, SM City San Lazaro, etc..
Intramuros (the walled city) is a tourist destination in Manila. The National Museum, San Sebastian Church, University of Sto. Thomas, Malacanang Palace, Binondo (China town of Manila), Rizal Park, part of Baywalk are other places to visit.
The common transportation is Jeepney but you can also take a cab or simply try LRT.

Orchid Garden is near the Century Park Hotel and another mall, the Harrison Plaza which is one of the older malls in Manila. For cheaper shopping you can visit this mall. :D
