Well worth the money

Before I left for Manila I read what others said about Mabini Mansions and I found it to be rubbish.
If you want a $5 doggy box you get a $5 doggy box - I chose to take the advice of the desk clerk and buy a $60 a night room - It was fantastic - renovated in the last few years, it had a kitchen, well serviced, clean and close to most places. Manila is awful for traffic but Mabini was central to most.
Worth a day trip to Corregador Island, Tagatay, and Taal Lake and volcano, Intramuros is a great half day -take the horse and cart. As far as accommodation goes only some of the rooms are renovated, and the cheapies are a bit old - but remember you only get what you pay for.

Unique Quality: Clean
Well positioned
Concierage and room staff absolutely great
