cheap, clean, accessible, place to stay in manila.

just came from manila, philippines and got this tip from a friend...its small hotel behind a filling station... was so happy to have stayed in it!

try TOILENA ROOM & BOARD near malate. (Php 980!!! for a day, dude, you can never go wrong with them. they even give 35% and 40% discounts on monthly stays!) they just finished their renovation.

their address is 1419 San Marcelino St., Paco, Manila. tel. 302-33-22. ( think the receptionist name is jane)

its a very affordble (yes, you can say cheap!) but clean, safe, accessible, comfortable and tourist friendly place to stay in manila.

Unique Quality: location, its near: PGH ( Philippine General Hospital ), Paco Park, Robinson's Place Manila, Malate, U.S. Embassy (10 min), nbi ( national bureau of investigation ), Taft Ave, St. Paul Manila, EAC ( Emilio Aguilnaldo College ), Medical Center Manila.

amenities: hot water, LCD TV, towels, intercom, WIFI Internet,

its value for money indeed. =)... plus filipino breakfast in bed is Php 80! ( US$1.80!)

staff are very friendly.. as their tagline says.. its really ALL THE COMFORTS OF HOME!

  • Opinion of Price: less expensive than average

Departure Tax

by lakesider52

My wife and I, both British citizens, will be visiting Manila shortly. Is there still a departure tax at Manila Int Airport and if so, how much? Cash only or do they take plastic? My wife is a Balikbayan - does that make any difference?
Many thanks in advance of responses.

Re: Departure Tax

There is a departure tax, which is roughly $7 (US) per person. I beleive they do take plastic, but you will most likely be charged a service fee by your bank.
Everyone pays this, regardless of nationality.

hello shohman ,not sure when u last visited manila or maybe the us dollar was worth a lot more then but the departure tax is 750 peso -which is a lot more than $7 .

Re: Departure Tax

I stand corrected. I was there in May, but now that you mention it, it was 750, which I believe is around $15

750 pesos, cash only. I have seen people proffering plastic being curtly redirected to the currency exchange booth.

I believe it will make a difference which passport. If she is a dual citizen and she uses her Filipino passport, she may be liable for the travel tax on departure. The travel tax varies for different circumstances and class of travel. For most Filipinos, it is P1620. To see if it applies in your situation and how much, read here.
http://www.philtourism.gov.ph/ttax.html

Otherwise, as already stated, it is P750 per person, in addition to any travel tax, regardless of which terminal you depart from.

In regard to Balikbayan, make sure you both ask to have your passports stamped as Balikbayans. You can check if this has been done by checking the required departure date in your passport, It will be 365 days from arrival instead of the usual 21 days from arrival. If you have not heard of the Balikbayan programme previously, read about it here

Yes, there is still a travel tax. I've just done some reading on it, and I do not believe that your wife will avoid it with her current status. The current rate is 1620 pesos for economy class 2100 pesos for first class. You can check out this site for all the details. http://www.philtourism.com/ttax.html

Travel Tips for Manila

Celebrating Independence Day

by D._Pepper

A public fireworks display is now traditional every June 12 - Philippine Independence Day. There are two venues - one at The Fort, just across EDSA from Makati, and the other one at the Manila Bay breakwater. I chose the Fort this year.

Quiapo - Binondo

by herzog63

If you enjoy the hustle-bustle of city life by locals then check out the Quiapo - Binondo area! I love this area! It is also the chinatown are area of Manila so if you like Chinese food this is the place to check out!!

Balut - wanna feel biting their organs?

by shintarojon

Balut - an unusual Filipino delicacy that needs a simple courage in order to appreciate the mystery behind its taste!!!

It is a half-boiled, fertilised duck egg. You can feel those crunchy tiny feet, beak, feathers and claws in your mouth but don' forget to put few drops of salt to make it tastier.

Huh, but why Filipino loves to eat "balut"???

Rich in energy as they say...but it also increases your sexual desire!!! True or not...eating "balut" will always be a part of our Filipino delicacy that can be bought during night times.

How about YOU??? Wanna try this "embryo" to satisfy your lonely nights??? Or to increase your strength in love-making? Or even to satisfy your curiosity about this irresistible taste? Try and have some fun biting those undeveloped tiny creature!!!

1. Paying in restaurants

by Ric

1. In all major restaurants a service charge is added to the bill. However you should leave c. P10 more in addition. Filipinos examine the bill very carefully, going over every item before paying. While this may seem awkward to the outsider, this close examination is usual.
