Accomodations on Mactan Island

by magtgn

I will be going there in January how bad are the mosquitos that time of year?

The nicest looking place I saw there was ALTA Cebu Resort How is the water in that area looks like it is on a river or narrow body of water is that very clear and clean on the beach?

The other place whose prices looked afpordable was Cebu White Sands At Maribago Bay Hotel

If anyone has been there or knows anything about them please let me know.

Thanks

Never stayed at either place and never intend to as I prefer to stay in Cebu City, as their is way more to do in the city.

If you are seeking affordable, did you check out Tambuli? Asiatravel.com has them for usd $49 + VAT (about 12% extra). You can check out all the Asiatravel deals here
http://asiatravel.com/cebu.html

However, I presume you are aware that Mactan island is not a tourist island like Boracay. It is the location of slums, squatters, factories, industry and the airport. It just happens to have some nice resorts and nice homes on the best bits.

Have been to Mactan many times at different times of the year and can not remember having any issue with mosquitoes
Do not know your budget but probably pacific bay resort and the Mactan Hilton are my pick of the 5 star places
Previous poster is not off the mark- other than hanging out at the resorts there is not a lot on Mactan, it is really a gateway to other places and islands.

Only reason I am going to PI is because GF could not obtain Visa to US or I would have gone to Maui much better place! No beggers, people aren't trying to ripe you off at hotels and not a 3rd world nation. Less expensive in Hawaii, shorter flight, not buggy, great beaches! If not for her I would never go to PI nothing therefor me at all!

well I can suggest you escape Mactan and head for borocay or Bohol for a nice beach and relaxing snorkeling and so on
Much nicer than Mactan

@magtgn just wondering how many times u have been to phils ? to say there is nothing there for u,i have been there 5 times and lucky enough to be able to go back again next year ,what hotels are trying to ( rip u off) surely their prices are given on website or on check in -if u dont want to stay there -then find something that suits ur budget .there are far more beaches in philippines than Maui ,as it has 7107 islands so if u visit all of them then maybe u can compare .there are beggars even if the richest of countries ,and whats wrong with 3rd world countries -a lot of what u use in life is made there and now u have a gf there -hope shes not a 3rd class citizen?.be more open to new experiences and u may actually enjoy ur time there .

Travel Tips for Mactan Island

Mactan Beaches

by yeah_baby

Famous worldwide for its beautiful white sand beaches and pristine clear waters, for an exceptional vacation experience. Mactan beach resorts offer superb accommodation facilities, scuba diving, wind surfing, boating and other aqua sports.

Customs

by yeah_baby

Avoid wearing sandals when attending special occasions in the local community - wearing shoes is a sign that the event is important to you.

Do invite people at least three times. Local residents are taught that it is proper to refuse the first time or two. To them, insistence is a clear sign that the offer or invitations is genuine.

Do give the local residents a way out of the situation so he can save face, thus avoiding embarrassment. Embarrassing him will cause "hiya" or loss of face.

Don't use the common sign of OK In the local community, it means money. You may use the new sign OK. This is the thumbs- up sign which has been commonly seen on television.

Don't use your forefinger upward to call a local resident-it is considered somewhat degrading. One way of calling is to beckon with the hand in gentle downward motion. Pssst is another popular way to get someone's attention. As a rule however, it is preferred to call the person by name. It is even better to use nicknames, because these are reserved for close friends.

Smiling is a form of friendship and a form of greeting.
Do show respect for age - use the proper appellations for elders and relations. Find out right away what appellations are used in the family.

Mactan Island , Cebu

"Cebu's most convenient paradise"

Mactan Island has the most accessible beach resorts in Cebu. If you travel from abroad to the Philippines, you definitely can by-pass Manila and go directly to Cebu, the 2nd busiest city in the Philippines. The international airport in cebu is near the resorts from budget to the first class types. Travel in the Philippines can't be complete without passing by cebu. its the 2nd gateway to most islands in the philippines.

Mactan Island - Cebu's Beachside Resorts

by vincentf

Mactan Island lies just east of Cebu City via two cross channel bridges. All the beachside resorts lie along Mactan Island. It also houses the Mactan-Cebu International Airport with direct flights from several Asian cities including Hong Kong.

Public transport in this area comes in a wide variety of choices. One of them is the motorized tricycle as shown here. The fare is around P4 per person.

This island is normally the jumping point for snorkelling/diving tours to the islands off of Mactan Island. You normally travel to these islands by these outrigger boats. This photo was taken upon returning from a full day of snorkelling. The outrigger encountered low tide, thus we had to be transferred on to a small boat to reach the pier.

Last Visit in November 2003

We came here to stay at a seaside resort, Cebu Beach Club. Unknowingly, the hotel is very inconvenient due to the fact it does not offer any bus shuttle service to/from Cebu City. A one-way van service costs P350 one way! The trip lasts 40-45min to reach the city centre. Furthermore, the roads leading into Mactan Island are in poor condition with its heavy congestion. Traffic vehicles may include taxis, buses, jeepneys, motorized/unmotorized tricycles, bicycles and automobiles. All the while, there are also stray animals and children alongside. At night, poor lighting conditions make driving a hazardous trip. Unknowingly, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport was on red alert after a brief siege by former Airport Control chief of Manila's international airport on 8 Nov. 2003. We took our flight on 9 Nov. 2003.

Highlight of the island is the starting point for island hopping tours. The water is very clear and pristine. Here's a shot of the coastline off a small island. The water is very shallow and various colours of starfish can be found easily.

On the tour, a nice BBQ seafood lunch is prepared for you and placed on banana leafs. For dessert, mangoes, pineapples and bananas await you.

Thia is the island sanctuary where we had the nice seaside lunch.

A lone boatsman in the middle of the sea.

Here's a general view of this island. This photo already shows half of the island. The hut on the left is where the people cook the BBQ.

Guitarists may accompany your BBQ lunch. Here they are entertaining some Japanese tourists.

This is the nearest strip mall near our hotel. However, only half are opened since the other half is still under construction! It is located near one of the Mactan's bridges linking Mandaue City.
