Frendz Resort Boracay

A good cheap option.

I had booked my stay at Frendz online and it was exactly what I would have expected from a backpackers hostel in Asia. No frills but everything the modern backpacker seems to need, including as good an internet connection as you would be able to get in these parts. I remember when backpackers sat about poring over guidebooks but now it seems that the benighted Facebook is the medium of choice. I am not on it and never will be but I was surprised at just how important it seems to be to younger travellers.

However, to a more objective description of the place which I am sure is what is called for. I had opted to stay in a communal room, although private ensuite rooms are available. The accomodation is in nipa huts, the tradidional means of construction here made primarily from bamboo. There were five of us in the room, which was fan cooled (I hate aircon as it wrecks my throat and always gives me a cold) and the bed was comforartable and clean. The only problem with sleeping was the damned cockerel nearby who seemed to think that dawn happened at about 0200 in the morning, but that is hardly the fault of the premises.

Frendz is run by a very affable Austrian guy called Reinhard and his charming Filipina wife. They are a great source of local knowledge and their infant child is an absolute delight! In addition, a very friendly Philippino staff keep the place spotless and the communal centre is a great place to hang out and meet travellers. They have a fairly extensive menu, mostly catering to Western tastes but the food is very good, particularly the breakfasts (as shown). One word of warning, though, the menu states that the restaurant closes at 2200 but it is realistically about an hour before that, so eat early.

There is occasional live music here (myself rather embarrassingly included) and if not there is always a good selection of music playing in the communal area.

In short, if you are travelling on a budget and want to experience the gorgeous white beaches of Boracay, this is as good an option as you will have.

Unique Quality: Nothing unique, just a very well run, clean, cheap place to lay your head.
