Beach, nightlife
by pounce
I'm looking for a hotel that is preferrably on the beach but also within 1/2 an hour from the nightlife area. Is there such a place? How long is it from Shangrila to the malls/restaurants/shows? Would the Hilton be closer (in time)?

Both the Shang and Hilton are in Mactan Island, so to get to downtown Cebu (where most of the nightlife is) you'd have to take a cab. Travel time could take at least 30 mins. to an hour depending on traffic conditions.

Totally agree with Stamporama...we stayed at the Shangrila Mactan and we just had the hotel car bringing us to the city...but there was another hotel we stayed in at the Cebu center itself --- it was right next to a mall...what was its name? Can't remember and can't google coZ I am just using blackberry...but, good luck! Norman :)

There I just remembered it - I think it was the Marriot Cebu on Cardinal Rosales Avenue

If I stay in Cebu for beach, there is only one place I love to stay - SHANGRILA MACTAN. There is no other place in Cebu that compares the class and ambiance of SHANGRILA MACTAN. If I want the night life in the city, I stay at the Marriott hotel near the big mall or the Waterfront hotel in downtown Cebu.
Hope this helps.
Travel Tips for Cebu Island
Cebu vs Davao
by chictraveller
i've been to cebu and davao, and i personally like cebu better :) here are the differences between the two:
CEBU - it's a good balance of city life and good beaches. the beach is a mere 30 minutes away, and at night you can go to the city anytime to enjoy the restaurants and night life. it also has a lot of tourist spots like Magellan's Cross, Sto. Nino, and Tops overlooking the whole city. if you plan to go to other islands like Bohol, Palawan and Boracay, there are a lot of flights from Cebu for that. Check out http://chictraveller.blogspot.com/ to have a preview of the places you might like :)
DAVAO - this place is a lot more laid back than Cebu. They have beaches too, but with a lot less options than Cebu. They have Eden Nature Park, Philippine Eagle Zoo and the like.
It's really up to you which suits you best. It would be good if you can visit the two places to experience what each has to offer :)
Colon Street
by barbskie
The heart of downtown Cebu named after Cristobal Colon. Also known as the Parian District and known as the oldest street in the country built by the Spaniards during the time of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. A glittering area by night lined with Cinemas, Restaurants, Department stores, and other business establishments. Many universities are situated near or along this popular street like the University of the Visayas(where i was once a student many years ago), University of San Carlos and the University of San Jose Recoletos. A bargain hunter's paradise probably those old stores compared to malls.
Orchid Gallery Mini-Zoo
by limledi
Aside from orchids, you can also find animals like beautiful talking birds (Myna) & monkeys. It's main attraction are the wide array of beautiful orchids, the most extensive orchid farm I've seen in a 3.5 hectare lot. It's really worth checking out especially if you're fond of orchids.
Lake Danao Park
by limledi
All 700 hectares of fresh water, it is the biggest and the only natural lake in Cebu. Home to the purple heron and the Philippine wild duck, the lake is a government-designated bird sanctuary. You can take a boat and picnic at the lake’s islet, or fish for tilapia and have it grilled at Green Lake Park or Lake Danao Park afterwards, which was developed by present municipal mayor, Hon. Al Arquillano. Very serene and nice, its my favorite place of the whole Camotes Island Tour.
Living in Cebu

"American living part time in Cebu"
I am an American who has taken to living in Cebu part time. The relaxing slow nature of the Philippines is seductive. The genuinely caring and good nature of Filipinos is welcome and the price is right.
